Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

I had mostly lost interest in the wackiness of the cult

Really?

Anybody out there that is looking for some serious insight into just how twisted the pedterno cult is, I suggest watching the documentary "Happy Valley" on Netflix. These fucking wackadoos are far more widespread than just a group of message board fanatics.

I had mostly lost interest in the wackiness of the cult over the last year or two, as they basically just bounce the same rhetoric around their little echo chamber, but I came across that documentary this past weekend and it reignited my hate for these lunatics.
It's definitely not a vocal minority as some would have you believe. Everyday driving to work I see 409 and JVP magnetic decals on cars along with the usual lion paw and chipmunk/lion head magnets.

Not to knock the branch campuses too much but our company had some interaction with the Berks and Delco campus business students. I'll be kind and just say that these were the type of students you would have seen at community college 20 years ago and not at a B1G school. And their degree will not look any different than if they had been at UP for 4 years. Something very wrong with that model

Wasn't Spanier the one that expanded the degree programs at the branches and the world campus concept?

"The expanded degree programs at the branches" --- not sure if it was his "idea", but it definitely happened under Spanier's watch. I was there in the mid-late 90s and it was only ~ 2-3 branches (Erie being foremost) that offered full 4-year degrees. I was rather stunned when I heard at some point in the mid-late 2000s that it was now an every branch thing.

I know I sound semi-elitist in saying this, but I think diplomas/transcripts/resumes should absolutely indicate whether it was University Park or one of the branch campuses. Penn State does not currently do this with diplomas or transcripts. They should. Not sure what Ohio State does as regards the Lima, Newark, Marion, etc campuses?

In interviewing job candidates in my career, I've definitely encountered UM-Dearborn and UM-Flint grads who try to play that game --- they'll say (or put on their resume) "I graduated from the University of Michigan." A U-M transcript clearly delineates between those 2 and Ann Arbor. Playing that game is an automatic dis-qualifier for me. The dis-qualifier is NOT that they went to Dearborn or Flint (they aren't bad schools by any means), but that they are being less than forthright about their background.

"World campus" was a Spanier initiative for sure. Although many many schools are into the "virtual campus" thing these days. PSU is just currently "ahead of the game" a bit, but this will likely equal out soon.

I don't have a philosophical problem with the "World Campus" idea (with the caveat, again, that transcripts should indicate this). My concern is whether the "World Campus" is viewed more as (1) a "marketing and financial" initiative or (2) a "stays consistent with our institution's core mission" initiative. One anecdote: when we played in Ireland last August, there were "Penn State World Campus" advertisments EVERYWHERE around the field/stadium/town. Stuff like that makes me think it is more (1) vs (2).

The rise of branch schools is all part of a trend. IF Northern Kentucky, where I teach, is an indicator, I'm guessing the whole brick and mortar campus concept is entering dinosaur territory. We're being encouraged to teach on-line classes more and more. The state legislature is pushing schools to offer on-line courses to high school students.

Miami is now offering three year degree programs to top high school students.

Vo - Ed is taking over the world of higher education.

I'm guessing that within 15 to 20 years the vast majority of undergrad schooling will be at branches and the main campus will be shrunk to a size commiserate with meeting grad school needs.

The bowl season is upon us -- when the Pedsters naturally root against every Big 10 team and whine about how much the Big 10 hates them. The linked thread has it all: Pedster whining that the "Plowboy conference" did not support their child-raping program, ESPN hates them and "makes shit up," PSU "probably" would have won the national title in 1994 if the Big 10 voters had not been so biased, Rashaan Salaam won the '94 Heisman over Ki-Jana Carter and Kerry Collins because ESPN is biased.

The 1994 lie is their most disgusting. Even if they had won every single first place vote in Big Ten country, they wouldn't have won the title. In fact, they did better in the Big Ten states than they did in every other, single region of the country. As much as I hate them, I want them to stay and wallow in mediocrity in the Big Ten East rather than have some easy path to 10 wins every year in an ACC North.

In all fairness to these freaks though, I will be rooting for every other Big Ten team (including Harbaugh) to win except for the pedsters.

Penn State prof thrown off plane for "self-upgrading"...so, this is a multidimensional concept that applies outside sports too?

Self-upgrading: New term to me, and what a great one! I can imagine using this to describe someone whose ego to achievement ratio is wildly out of balance. Some arrogant bastard whose opinion of himself is not shared by the rest of humanity: He has Self-Upgraded. I like it.

My personal favorite is the two out of three PA voters.

Look where the two Pennsylvania fans who voted for Nebraska were located, though. The Cult always claims that those two voters were jealous Pitt fans.

Oh I know. We've had a pretty thorough look at it all here over the years.

There used to be a page from cultist that compared the 94 voting to the 97 voting to 'prove' that B1G writers were biased towards TSUN as one of the Big Two (along with Ohio State). It never seems to occur to them that people would vote based on the merits of individual teams rather than affiliation.

Lot of good stuff on BWI right now. The Cult is reduced to living vicariously through other programs to beat the Big 10's top teams. Bushwood in fine form on BWI with nine separate threads on the front page ranting about the Big 10/The Tiny Turds/Delany not backing PSU's child-raping program.
