Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

It's been brought up in several articles how insular and incestuous the administration was. Not only were they almost all Ped Aggy alumni but many of them were former Paterno players.

This is really unique and unheard of for an AAU research university.

Well, that's central PA for you

The best thing for Penn State would be a quick trial and sentencing. That's going to hinge on Sandusky's defense team, which right now appears to be as organized as the coaching search. i.e. too confusing to call.

Once the story stops being page 1 Penn State will be OK. Why?
106K stadium X Strong Alum/fan base + BTN revenue = $$$ and $$$ = ability to buy the coach you want.

IMO there are 3, possibly 4, tier one coaching jobs in the Big 10 and Penn State is, and will be, one of them.

Not sure I agree with that, Cinci.

Ped State was in trouble with the consequences of JoPa's staying too long in the first place, in my IMO. That is - Ped State football, prior to JoPa, was middling to good, but it wasn't consistently great. If you look at the pre-Paterno records, I don't see "traditional power" in those numbers. Ped State

Ped State is in the middle of nowhere. I think Kansas State with more trees.

Ped State is... well... Ped State. Who the hell wants to send their kid there now? Who wants to step into the facility where young boys were being raped by a long time coach? There is no doubt Ped State will continue to field a football team, but I have to think the "Ped State" stigma is going to keep a lot of kids from even considering that place now.

Ped State may be one of the 3 or 4 premier coaching jobs as you suggest - in the long term. But, not right now. It's hard enough to replace a "legend" It's even harder to do so in light of the goings on there. I have a hard time believing a top tier coach wants anything to do with that mess right now. I expect they'll hire some "also ran" up and comer kind of coach. That coach will fail to deliver and end up fired. And.. it'll maybe be the next guy who gets the football program going again. Maybe.

I dont know, Cinci - I could be wrong, but it seems to me that Ped Aggy has a long road in front of them.

I'm saying this with a 5 year from now point of view so just assume the stigma of the Pedo stuff has died down to an acceptable level......PSU has the framework to be a perennial top 10 program imo. Natural recruiting base, facilities, money, fanbase, tradition, good school.

I know these things (especially recruiting) have fallen on hard times but I still say the right guy (say an Urban Meyer) could go in there, turn it around and make a monster.

Of all the schools I hear fans call a "sleeping giant" PSU is one where I actually believe it. It sure as hell wouldn't be easy and there is obviously a lot wrong right now but again, I think the basic frame work is there.

V. true.

As further evidence I offer the extensive list of sponsors for the Penn State athletic programs ...
Penn State Athletics would like to thank its Corporate Partners for their support.

OK. That's all of them. Sorry for the long read.

Not to discount the outrageous level of the offenses committed, by Sandusky and those who covered up his crimes, but I think the most damage is being done by Penn State fans. Every time that they protest at the unfairness of the current situation and overlook all this, every time that they treat visiting fans the way that they do, they give the impression of a localized culture that few people would want to be part of.

Paterno was, in my opinion, an over-rated legend. Had he stepped down even ten years ago, then I suspect he would have been seen that way in hingsight. Perhaps the reason that he stayed around was fear that all of this would come out. Whatever, I think it will take Penn State more than a decade to recover from this, if at all.

I reluctantly agree with you regarding the foundation. I'm reluctant, because it pains me to say anything remotely positive about that place. And that was true even before the Sandusky business.

But, like you, I don't think Ped State's just gonna keep on trucking like nothing ever happened. You identified a 5 year period. That could be about right, in my opinion. Though, I wouldn't be surprised if it's more like 10.. or even "never"
