Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

Man, the corn sucks balls.

Academic rankings are not the be all and end all, but if you look at what the bulk of the criteria is, they are valid. I like this ranking because it focuses solely on undergraduate measures such as selectivity (the quality of the student body) retention and graduation rates, affordability. I even like the way it aggregates other rankings into an overall "prestige" factor that translates directly into how businesses and graduate schools are going to view the quality of your education and how well that degree will travel nationally and internationally. In and of themselves, I don't think anyone would say that these factors are not important in evaluating a university. All the rankings tend to do is aggregate several factors into an overall score.

Disclaimer: This is mostly an engineering perspective

The reason I don't take them seriously is that Subject-Matter rankings are more relevant than general rankings. If you're majoring in Math, do you care if they have a great nationally recognized History department?
If you're in Engineering, there's little doubt that MIT and CalTech are at the very top. Schools like Georgia Tech and Purdue probably belong in the top-10... but overall, they'll of course place lower... probably somewhere around the 30s.
The other reason is that rankings aren't that important in Grad School applications. At least in Engineering, schools are very selective... but they still take enough that your own Performance (GRE and Grades) is far more important than where you went.
To argue against myself, a higher ranked school would probably prepare you for the GRE and/or FE better.

Great thread currently on Audibles in which the Pedsters "look back" at last year's Ohio St. game. Apparently, every close PSU loss over the past 20 years has been due to the refs cheating the Pedsters, while PSU has not received a favorable call since 1982. :ohno:

MicahandMe: "I'll be writing my yearly "prediction" stories in a few weeks, and this is the first year that I will be factoring in referee bias into our games with the "big 3" in our conference. It could be a blowout like OSU 2013, and then the refs can call 50 calls against OSU or MSU or UM. But when it counts, in a close game, I sadly believe that there is a prescribed bias that comes from Big Ten HQ.

I think it happened in Nebraska in 2012 as well, a game that I attended.

I'm not even upset about it anymore. The only thing that upsets me is other fans coming in and telling us "it happens both ways" or "we would have beaten you anyway" or "quit crying."

Mikes Kauffman: "Which is why I detest the Big Ten.

And is also why I remind anyone who defends this conference, about all 15 games that have been stolen from us, in just 20 years in it."

DrStrangelove: "Basically every close game Penn State has lost in the past 20 years, someone, somewhere, thinks they can make a compelling case "proving" that the Big10 refs cheated to make the other team win."

Trig3: "Yet, when most naysayers want to cite a game when Penn State might have benefitted from a bad call, they have to go back to 1982 (33 frickin years!) in the Nebraska game. That one call, a "bang-bang OOB call at that, is used as justification for 20 years of screw jobs in this corrupt conference.

Most of those PSU fans who mention the uncanny nature of so many timely bad calls against the Lions are referencing not the tough calls that require immediate and often difficult judgments, but rather those calls that are totally bizarre, never-seen-before types:

1. bounced balls called completions (the Hartsock reference) that helped OSU in 4th quarter comeback
2. bounced balls called interceptions (last year's OSU game) that gave Buckeyes a turnover in Lion territory
3. bounced balls called interceptions (last year vs. Michigan, but fortunately overturned by a properly functioning replay)
4. in-bounds receptions ruled by 1 ref as "juggled" and by another as simply OOB ... though replay showed the Lion WR with BOTH feet inbounds and in full control of the catch (vs. Michigan)
5. the now infamous toe-heel Avant call (vs. Michigan)
6. the no-fumble call on a RB still standing when he lost the ball (vs. OSU)
7. the 4-second extension to run a play to help OSU kick a FG
8. the "spiking the ball in anger" call vs. Matt McGloin
9. the incomplete forward pass call on a ball that went backwards (vs. Michigan)
10. the phantom time out call that helped OSU
11. the incredible time a ref stopped the clock on a run up the middle near the goal line when Michigan was out of time outs ... it allowed the Wolverines to set up for a FG. Penn State still won the game in the 2nd half, but have any of you ever seen the clock stopped inside the 10 on a running play and no time out called by either team?

These are simply a few of the types of calls that are not simply "bad" but also clearly intentional."

Miles Kauffman: "Excellent post. Five stars.

Don't forget "Illegal Jumping" against Mike Hull last year in overtime. The only time, ALL YEAR, that call was made in all of D1 college football."

Don't bother them with FAX but there were 128 teams in FBS last year.

Only 21 of them had more penalty 1st downs per game than Penn Sate (calls in their favor that resulted in 1st downs)

Only 23 f them had fewer opponent penalty 1st downs per game than Penn State (calls against them that resulted in opponent first downs)

More indicative of a lack of coaching talent than of a lack of player talent.

Marylands experience with joining the B1G seems to not quite fit the BWI narrative

shockingly enough

Yep, and our Camaro driving and Aqua Velva splashing brethren are happier than a mobster in a titty bar to be part of the Big Ten. As are our new conference members who wipe their asses with corncobs. It's all good for everyone except the Paterno cult who thought they were going to come in and all would bow down to Dearest Leader Pa Joe Il who would run all things, execute any disloyal referees and, of course, would never defecate.

I like how they've added MSU to the "big 2"... and what warranted that? Oh... MSU is better than they are, but they can't just accept that. So it's got to be some Conference-wide agenda to elevate a school that's gone to just 4 Rose Bowls before Dantonio...

If being better than Ped State is the only criteria for them adding a team to the Big 2, then they need to add a lot more than MSU to the list.

They really don't know much about college football...do they?

I laughed when you said "blunders by the refs." Yeah, sure they were "blunders." I bet we'll see more "blunders" when we play them again this year.

2014 Nittany Lions were a dangerous team. Last year's national champs would endorse that view.

Yeah, because if you take those 10 points off the scoreboard, the rest of the game goes EXACTLY the same as it did. Every decision by both coaching staffs, every decision by EVERY player on the field - exactly the same. I don't buy it. When it came down to when it really counted - overtime - Penn State couldn't stop Barrett, who was hurt enough for Marshall and Wilson to take some multiple consecutive snaps out of the wildcat.

I hope Ohio State is winning 63-0, and they put in their third-string quarterback (I don't care which is first, second, third). On #3's third touchdown pass of the game, the receiver's feet are clearly out of bounds, and the referee and replay booth confirm that it is a completion for a touchdown. I want to see Meyer calling for replays on the spot of the ball when Penn State is gifted first downs on fourth down attempts. I want to see rivers flowing out of BWI and Audibles from the tears of the posters over there about what a classless guy Urban Meyer is, about how he's cheating because his defensive lineman listens to Electronic Dance Music, about how they were unfairly sanctioned for doing what is right, about how their quarterback will be more successful in the NFL than any of our quarterbacks. "We may be a perennial 4-loss team, but at least there's a quarterback on the Oakland Raiders 2-deep from Penn State." Whoopty-Doo. Good luck beating Michigan this year - the winner gets to go to the Pinstripe Bowl.
