after 20 years in BIG have the benefits matched the projection?
it is my understanding that PSU had projected to see benefits as follows:
  1. Increased research $$$ due to more elite collaboration
  2. Benefit to FB be being in a conference
  3. Benefit to other sports = the All sports conference that Joe wanted
  4. More national prestige = PSU moves up in the rankings toward NW, Mich, Wisconsin and Univ Illinois (BIG top schools)
2) FB has not benefited much from BIG affiliation. If anything, PSU wound up giving cred to the conference, and did not get much access to the robust talent in the BIG. instead the other teams seemed to recruit even more people from our backyard while we didn't get as many from their area. We did get some Michigan players while they were down - but assume that is over with JH arrival.

Giving cred to the conference? If anything, they've shown that they had inflated their prestige standing on the backs of Syracuse, Rutgers, Pitt, West Virginia, etc. It may be true that they had a better record during their first 7 years, but that just tells me that they had a good run for 7 years. Rutgers had a few good years a little while ago. Oregon has had a good string of years going. Texas had a good stretch. Does that mean that all of those teams are "power" teams?

The fact is that they've averaged about a 5-3 record in Big Ten play each year. They definitely lost cred by joining the Big Ten, but the Big Ten hasn't gained any.
