Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

Think back to 2007 - a few years before the whole Sandusky molestation thing hit the headlines.... Remember when PedState fought tooth and nail to keep Joesus' salary from becoming public record. It was only after they lost in court, (and again at the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court) until they actually disclosed anything - and when they did, the amount seemed suspiciously low - right around $1M/year......This never sat right with me.....

Why fight so hard to hide something that (if true) would actually paint the university in a positive (football-is-not-the-most-important-thing-here) kind of light? At $1m, Joesus' salary would've been a bargain - Pete Carroll was pulling in over $4m per at usc; Kirk Ferentz was making over $3m....... We're supposed to believe that for no good reason, PedState fought all the way to the State Supreme Court to hide the fact that they were paying their coach One Million dollars per year? Something doesn't smell right here.....

If that number isn't true, then what was the real number? How and why were the numbers manipulated?

I am no investigative reporter, but I'll throw my hypothesis out there...... the University knew there was some incriminating/unethical/illegal [Mark May] in their finances and didn't want anyone sticking their nose in them, for fear of where it might lead or who it might send to prison. When they were forced to disclose the numbers, they cooked up some nothing-to-see-here crap to try to keep everyone from wanting to take a second look at them....

It does make me curious though - if they were so bound and determined to keep something as mundane as the football coach's salary out of the public eye, imagine what else they'd be willing to go to the grave for?
There's nothing nefarious going on with the amount he was paid. That's what makes these people so fucked up. They fought to keep it from being public, and then changed the amount to only look like $1m for one reason only......the same reason they did anything else. Joe Paterno's image. He's supposed to be so honorable that he just coaches for the love of all things Penn State....what happens when the world finds out he actually gets paid a lot of money?

All other universities fudge the numbers because it makes them more money. Tax write offs and creative accounting....blah blah blah. I fully believe these people are only in it for the image of Paterno. Calling them a cult isn't just a funny dig at some weirdish behavior. They really are a damn cult.

Sometimes the jokes write themselves...

Could be the next "victim?" (Or whatever you call them)...

Ok BP, write up your own recaps about how you think his overnight stay in Happy Valley went!

You mean like multiple interest-free "loans" that Joesus was never forced to repay or report on his income? Yeah, stuff like that.......

I doubt that particular example. Pretty easy to trace on both sides. I would like to think they would have been more creative than that and I think they were if I remember correctly on another certain Schedule **cough**C**cough** on that return.

Paging @ORD_Buckeye , but I'm fairly certain the University has given Paterno many "loans" they forgot to collect on.

I don't know. I remember something about that and his being included in local development groups with no capital contribution on his part, but I don't remember precisely. I will say that I agree that it was all about protecting his image. JoePed wanted to pretend that he wasn't even getting the million and was only making a couple of hundred grand, so the university said "yes sir" and spent years and millions of dollars in legal fees protecting the myth.

The guy who hated his own statue, while the fans fight for it - that guy was all about image?!? I don't buy it.

And remember how the sainted family (those who carry the holy blood of Pa Joe Il) all got together, called the press and made a final pilgrimage to the "hated" statue.

They say that Stalin publicly hated all the factories and villages that were being named after him. That he would put on this display of profound humility and appear to grudgingly accept it because that's what the workers and peasants wanted to bestow upon him. Of course, they were all being named after him on his orders. Sound familiar?

So who can I count on to take part in next weekend's "Paterno Family Run?" Wonder if Scott Paterno will be taking part in the run, which ends at the Beaver Stadium 50-yard line after running through the players' tunnel?

The event benefits the Special Olympics. That is, of course, a great cause. I just shake at the team names like the "409ers," however.

I'd sponsor a team named "The Pedternos"...

That's one of the cult's biggest fantasies. It was Schultz, and he was the VP for Finance, which meant at some point on a flow chart there was a box that said University Police Department a couple of layers underneath the box that had his office in it. Contrary to the cult's constant bleating, he was not the "head of the police department." He was never in his life any form of licensed law enforcement officer. FACT! In fact, he wasn't even a lawyer (EVIDENTS), which would have made him an officer of the court with certain, required reporting responsibilities (Note that, for such an overwhelmingly and gravely legal situation, Paterno & his lackeys never brought an actual lawyer into the discussion).

Thanks for the correction. Somehow I got fooled into thinking Schultz was relevant in a legal advice sense rather than being a glorified treasurer

I used a free online gif generator and couldn't find a better one. If somebody knows how to make real gifs, have at it and create a better version by all means.

I don't think it can get much better... it's perfect AFAIC.
Cable Rob Lowe looks at tOSU Rob Lowe and then says "... and I molest boys" is dead on.

I want to participate if I get a shirt that says "Paterno Family Run" and the letters are spaced enough so I can use a sharpie to put an "I" in between the "U" and "N" in "Run." Nothin' like a good "Ruin"ing on the weekend to get the blood flowing.

Spanier was active in Harrisburg trying to fight mandatory reporting of many things including crime reports right up until the indictments were handed down. He spent a lot of time and energy trying to keep the public from knowing about what went on up there.

Similar cult of personality around Pedterno too...

I wonder when Franklin will do a secret speech and start the de-Pedternoization of Rhythmic Slappy Valley. I'm going to guess it'll be around the time the Pedsters win the B1G their one time every decade or so....
