Penn State at tOSU, Sat. 10/21, 12pm EST, FOX

So....been thinking about this game a bit...

Going into the Notre Dame game, everything seemed to be framed as a trial of what this program is and who is leading it. Ohio State (and Ryan Day), passed the test. It wasn't easy, it wasn't smooth, but it passed.

Ped State is built in a lot of ways like scUM is built - stout lines, ball control, efficient running game. In a lot of ways, they are built to beat Ohio State by limiting offensive chances by not allowing Ohio State to possess the ball. Had Notre Dame played more like the way Ped State (and scUM) will play Ohio State, maybe Ohio State loses that game.

I think Ped State can be looked at as that mid-game boss you have to beat to move on. If Notre Dame was the early on boss, then Ped State is the mid-game boss. That makes scUM the late game boss. They are also the dragon that has to be slayed.

Ultimately, Ped State thinks this is their year, but Ohio State needs this victory. They need to play with energy and even some desperation. While I don't think Penn State has been really tested yet, they will have confidence and that confidence must be shaken.

I don’t think their O Line is as stout as people think. Fashanu is obviously great but the LG is a RS Freshman who is about 35 lbs over his ideal weight. He started camp as their third string guy.

Caedan Wallace is very beatable at RT.

I wouldn’t call them bad and they’re certainly better than our OL, but outside of Fashanu I wouldn’t say they’re better than ND’s line.

I always enjoy beating Penn State. Easily the worst fans I've seen at a college atmosphere. Throwing around slurs with kids around

In the words of my Forbearers - Fuck Them Kids.

Back to the game itself. Ride the home crowd wave and throw it back to Tressel-ball if you have to. In any contest against the Silver Bullets +100,000 fans, I tend to lean our way in liking the matchup. Which reminds me, the Shoe needs to bring it. If the old folks don't want to stand and yell, then sell your tickets and stay at home. And the younger kids need to get off the god damn phone and bring the noise.

Just avoid the turnovers and sacks at all costs.

Agreed they’re coming in full of confidence. My question I have is what happens to that confidence if through 2 quarters we have 200 yards and 17 points?

They’re a complete product of who they’ve played. I have no doubt they’re a very good team but #1 in defense good? No I highly doubt that.

Tell me (not you specifically but in general) where Penn State is better than ND?

They don’t have a better OL than ND and it’s not particularly close. Alt is better than the Penn State kid and Penn State doesn’t have a RT like Fischer. As you point out the Penn State interior OL wasn’t supposed to start this year and they were already replacing a kid there too. This Penn State OL isn’t close to ND I think.

agree with the last part.

Just don’t turn the ball over and protect Kyle and we’re going to win this game.

I didnt realize this from JF's presser talking about McCord....

If you look at his touchdown-to-interception ratio, really good. Really good. So I'm not surprised, obviously. His high school coach is on our staff (defensive analyst Gabe Infante). You know, we recruited him. We know a lot about him. We had a ton of respect for him out of high school and continue to. We think he's going to be a challenge for us on Saturday as well."

PENNSYLVANIA HIGH SCHOOL PRODUCT KYLE MCCORD, OHIO NATIVE DREW ALLAR ON OPPOSITE SIDES IN OHIO STATE VS. PENN STATE

141816_h.jpg

The highest-rated quarterback recruit from the state of Pennsylvania in the last 15 years will square off against the highest-rated quarterback recruit from the state of Ohio in the modern recruiting era when Ohio State plays Penn State on Saturday.

They just aren’t playing for the teams you’d expect.

Drew Allar, a five-star recruit from Medina, Ohio, is in his first year as Penn State’s starting quarterback. Kyle McCord, Ohio State’s first-year starting quarterback, grew up in Mount Laurel, New Jersey, but played his high school football in Pennsylvania at St. Joseph’s Preparatory School in Philadelphia, where he too became a five-star recruit.

They’ll face off against each other for the first time on Saturday in what will be the biggest test yet for both of them as collegiate starters.
The stories of how McCord and Allar ended up playing in opposite states from where they played their high school football are different from one another. In McCord’s case, he was as heavily recruited by Penn State as he was by Ohio State – he actually received his offer from the Nittany Lions seven months before he got his offer from the Buckeyes – but decided to go a little further away from home because he felt playing for Ryan Day and OSU was the best fit for him.

“If you live in that Pennsylvania, New Jersey area, Penn State's like the school that everybody dreams of going to. So I’ve obviously been to a bunch of Penn State games, actually got to see them play Ohio State in 2018, the White Out game when Dwayne (Haskins) led them back in that comeback win,” McCord said Wednesday. “In the recruiting process, they were great. They were probably my number two choice. But I think when Coach Day gave me the green light to commit, there was really no doubt that this was the place to be, given his track record.”

Our Oline is potentially going to get abused in this game. I hope they have a plan in place for some plays that won't take too long to develop.
We’ve been saying this all damn year and that hasn’t happened.

Which included zero sacks at night on the road vs ND. Penn State is going to have some success but I think everyone in buckeye nation should give some credit to this OL. The potential is there. Maybe have a bit of confidence?

The weaknesses of the line may play to our hand to an extent. Diaz's worst games seem to come when he thinks he can feast. He tends to give his guys up front a lot of freedom to attack where they think they can get through, so there tends to be less gap discipline. The guys on the back end are mostly in zones waiting for the pressure to create a jumped route. He's always been VERY susceptible to read option and counters because his guys sell out so hard up front and if someone gets through, the back line can be caught flat footed.
