Penn State at tOSU, Sat. 10/21, 12pm EST, FOX

We’ve been saying this all damn year and that hasn’t happened.

Which included zero sacks at night on the road vs ND. Penn State is going to have some success but I think everyone in buckeye nation should give some credit to this OL. The potential is there. Maybe have a bit of confidence?
So far we have given up 6 sacks (41st in the nation), whereas PSU has given up 4 (3rd in the nation). And PSU has played no defense worth mentioning, I get that. But I have never really felt all that comfortable on McCord being safe in the pocket and would be curious to see the QB pressures he has had and not just sacks. But you are right, ND's front 7 presented every bit of a challenge as PSU will in my books, albeit I think Diaz can get guys home to the QB better with his scheme. We will really find out what the OL is made of in this game, for better or for worse. Good news is we are at home and crowd noise won't be an issue.

My real shortcoming in confidence for the OL is in the run blocking. If we get stuffed, it will compound issues with pass pro on the OL. Then Diaz gets to send the house if we become predictable. Yeah we have an amazing passing offense, but with no run a defense like PSU under Diaz will be an issue.

On defense, what is this talk about Allar being a 5* recruit? No he was not...McCord was, Allar was not. Either way, make no mistake that we picked the right guy there. Allar is a class-act kid and I am not going to disparage him at all (he refuses to give the media the whole "Ohio scorned me and now I have something to prove" bit, so I have a lot of respect for him), but I will take Kyle in this game any day.

Not to say we can't win the game without these guys, but if all of Egbuka and Burke are out...that could be a real problem, especially Burke. At WR, I have faith in Fleming, X, Tate, Ballard and Innis to find a way (and of course Stover)....but Egbuka is a different level to not letting a defense focus on MH Jr. On Burke, that one is just obvious...lockdown corner that is irreplaceable...I like Davison and Hancock, but only guy that could cover for Burke is Mathews...everyone knows how much I love that kid, but in a game that big you just don't know. Mathews is the truth, but I hope Saturday is not the time to prove it.

The weaknesses of the line may play to our hand to an extent. Diaz's worst games seem to come when he thinks he can feast. He tends to give his guys up front a lot of freedom to attack where they think they can get through, so there tends to be less gap discipline. The guys on the back end are mostly in zones waiting for the pressure to create a jumped route. He's always been VERY susceptible to read option and counters because his guys sell out so hard up front and if someone gets through, the back line can be caught flat footed.
This sounds very astute and logical...
and matches up to what @RB07OSU posted

But can they cover like ND? I think not.

Saw PFF had Kiser as a top 3 LB and that’s along with their corners who are better than Penn States.

That’s great that Penn State is going to blitz but will their back end hold up?

Because all I know is Marvin had his way with King last year and I got my money on Marvin being the more improved between those two.

I stand by that ND will prove to be the better defense.

You're thinking too rationally and not taking into account the fact that psu plays out of their asses against us every year.

In my mind, like many others here, this game comes down two issues.

1. Who is healthy and can play at close to 100%? I think there is enough depth to make this issue less serious than it seems for most positions, with the defensive secondary being a possible exception.

2. Line play. Can the offensive line hold and can can the defensive line get to Allard?

I expect a close game, but not as close as the computers and betting would suggest.
