Parker Fleming (Official Thread)

Have we attempted to block one punt all year?

Punt run backs are a fucking joke as the gunners are right on the returner when they catch the ball

How my punts have been fielded inside the 10? I’ve lost track.

Punting has been a fricking adventure most of the season. Bad snaps, bad decisions by the punter, average punts at best.

FGs, extra points, kickoffs have been fairly solid. Makeable FG distance is questionable.

Am I the only one (I know I am not) who could see the Sparty coach cup his hand around his headset mic before the fake punt and knew that it was going to be a fake punt?

(and no, I haven't scouted them in person ahead of time. That was the legal kind of obvious sign stealing)

I was in the very last row of the upper deck and everyone up there knew it was coming. It was the most obvious fake punt situation you could ever imagine.

I see we're still ignoring the fact the regular defense was on the field for the fake punt and not a special teams unit.

Carry on.

Is the regular defense the best thing to stop an obvious fake punt? We all saw that's who was out there but it seems to me that if you know the opponent is going to fake it, you should be able to stop it.

Unless of course you are playing OSU, then just let us run the fake and we'll fuck it up ourselves.

I guess what I'm saying is if we're going to criticize a coach for the fake punt working, it should be pretty much anyone else but Fleming. He had nothing to do with whatever occurred in this scenario.

There's plenty of other stuff to worry about with him. This isn't one of them.

Yeah, I really don't know how it works. Does the ST coach tell the DC "hey it's a fake" and he leaves the D out there? If your SY guy says "hey it's a fake" do you run a special defense for it?

Seems like you should be able to stop it if it's painfully obvious it's coming.

More than likely at midfield, in that scenario, you run what's called "punt safe"...and it's typically a defensive call. You run a defensive set to cover the gaps and receivers and maybe drop one of the safeties back a bit to fair catch the ball. Not sure if they did drop a safety back or not during the game.

And since there was a timeout, they absolutely discussed it being a fake and left the defense on the field for it.

I can't imagine Ohio State is letting the special teams coordinator call the defense for that since no one does, so far as I'm aware. That would be exceptionally odd.
