The Titans have agreed to terms with former Jets punter Reggie Hodges.

Hodges will take the place of veteran Craig Hentrich, who suffered a calf injury in Sunday's loss to the Texans.

Hodges averaged 42.8 yards on 44 punts last season for the Jets. He's also played for the Eagles and Rams, with a career average of 40.2 yards.

To make room for Hodges on the 53-man roster, the Titans released cornerback Cary Williams.

"Reggie is going to punt this week and then we'll see,'' agent Glenn Schwartzman said. "I am sure they'll give Craig every opportunity to come back, but it is a great opportunity for Reggie. He's excited to go on Sunday.

"For Reggie it is great for him to join a great organization and go back and punt against his old team.''

Hodges worked out for the Titans on Tuesday along with three others punters including A.J. Trapasso, who was with the Titans during the preseason.

The Titans have also signed Trapasso to the practice squad. Practice squad defensive tackle Mitch King was waived injure

My first thought: holding onto Hentrich is proving to be a disaster for the Titans. I mentioned only a month ago that Hentrich was old and injury prone, and here it is Week 3 of the NFL season and the Titans have to sign another punter, keep Hentrich, and resign AJ too as a backup in case Hodges doesn't work out. In order to carry two more punters on top of Hentrich, the Titans had to release Cary Williams and Mitch King, and there's still no guarantee another team won't come along and give AJ a spot on a 53-man roster, forcing the Titans to let him walk.

All this roster turmoil over an old punter whose best attribute is being a really good holder for PATs and FGs.

My second thought: I'm just tickled to death that AJ Trapasso took Mitch King's job. Unemployment couldn't have happened to a better douchebag.

Yo, Mitch King! You just lost your job to an OSU punter. How ya like dem apples?

Way to go AJ!

Titans punter knows he might be done
Craig Hentrich not ready to say he's retiring, however
By Jim Wyatt ? THE TENNESSEAN ? October 1, 2009

Titans punter Craig Hentrich isn?t sure what his future holds, but he has a hunch.

Placed on Injured Reserve on Tuesday, Hentrich knows there?s a good chance he?s punted in his last NFL game. But he?s not ready to definitively answer the retirement question.

?I have been saying I?m going to be done for the last four or five years, so I am definitely not going to say that. But I understand that this possibly could be it, especially with the injuries I?ve had this year,?? he said. ?Who knows? I am not going to say yes or no yet, but it?s not looking very good at this point.??

Hentrich suffered a calf injury in the Sept. 20 loss to the Texans. The Titans indicated they were going to try and wait on Hentrich, but when they had two players in the secondary suffer injuries against the Jets, they couldn?t hold his roster spot any longer. They placed him on IR, ending his 2009 season.

The 16th-year pro said he understood. He also said he plans to do everything he can to stick around and help the other punters ? Reggie Hodges and A.J. Trapasso ? and kicker Rob Bironas. The Titans told Hentrich he could travel with the team as well.

Broncos sign punter Trapasso
By Mike Klis

The Broncos added another punter Tuesday by signing A.J. Trapasso. An undrafted free agent rookie out of Ohio State this season, Trapasso didn?t punt but spent time with the Tennessee Titans, New York Jets, Tampa Bay Bucs and then back to the Titans? practice squad.

For a punter who didn?t punt, Trapasso made a name for himself when he struck Cowboys Stadium?s famed (and infamous) video board during the first preseason game played at Dallas? new facility. Trapasso also scored on a 40-yard fake punt return during the Titans? Hall of Fame exhibition against the Buffalo Bills.

The Broncos last two roster additions have been punters _ they signed Britton Colquitt, another undrafted rookie last year, in the final week of the season.

It appears Trapasso and Colquitt will compete to become the Broncos? punter in 2010, although the team still has 15-year veteran Mitch Berger.

Dallas Cowboys' video board is high enough for NFL
By Charean Williams, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Texas

Mar. 18--A.J. Trapasso has never punted in a regular-season game. Yet, his name is in the record book -- and a footnote in the rules book -- and the NFL is hoping he stays there as the only punter ever to hit the video board at Cowboys Stadium.

Rich McKay, the co-chairman of the league's competition committee, said Wednesday the height of the video board has not been discussed in the committee's rules meetings.

"There was no real discussion of that, because of the fact that [no punts hit] it this year," McKay, the Atlanta Falcons president, said in a conference call. "We did not have anybody come in and make an argument that it should be higher, lower, different."

Trapasso, then a rookie trying to make the Tennessee Titans' roster, hit the 160-foot-long HD board, which is 90 feet above the playing field, with a punt during the first exhibition game at Cowboys Stadium. Titans coach Jeff Fisher, the co-chairman of the league's competition committee, was among those to question whether it was high enough, predicting "it is not a one-time occurrence."

The NFL said then it would review the height of the board after the 2009 season, though it did make rules changes in the event of a ball hitting the board. Those rules changes will become permanent at the annual spring league meetings next week in Orlando.

The "A.J. Trapasso Rule" would force a do-over, with the clock reset and the ball placed back at the original line of scrimmage for another fourth-down play. The replay official has the authority -- even if it's not in the final 2 minutes of a half -- to initiate a replay challenge if there is doubt about whether the ball has hit the board.

On the team's punters

"The ball is traveling a long way out there between the two of them (Britton Colquitt and A.J. Trapasso). Both of them have strong legs. I think consistency and their ability to perform in situations where there is pressure I think is really going to be the determining factor in terms of how that all shakes out. We are very excited about how the way both of them are working. They are both very capable players at that position and that is why they are both here, so we think that the competition is making them both better. I think they are both kind of eager to win a job, but that probably won't be determined for a while. We are excited about both of them. They both really have a lot of ability and a lot of talent. Now it's about molding some of that into consistency and being able to do the things under pressure that we are going to ask them to do."

Britton Colquitt takes the lead in Broncos' punting competition
Posted by Mike Florio on June 13, 2010

The Denver Broncos continue their search for a new punter via a head-to-head battle betweenBritton Colquitt and A.J. Trapasso.

For now, one of them holds the lead.

"I think Britton is ahead," coach Josh McDaniels said Sunday. "We've done a lot of different situations, we've charted them, we've put them in some tough predicaments and we've monitored their progress. I think both players have really improved a lot in 16 practices and I think, you know, it's always good to have young players pushed. Again, that's a competitive situation, you know, like we have at a lot of places on our football team, and I think that's only making both of them better but at this point, I'd say that Britton has kind of pulled ahead."

A.J. Trapasso can't catch a break
Posted by Mike Florio on July 9, 2010

One of the biggest names of the 2009 preseason was A.J. Trapasso. The undrafted punter went untouched for a touchdown in the Hall of Fame game, and he later shtoinked a non-fake punt off the District 9 spacecraft hovering over the floor of Cowboys Stadium.

Since then, he has bounced around the league, most recently being cut by the Broncos.

So he landed with the Hartford Colonials of the UFL, where he presumably would be able to stick around for the season, given his ability to remain on the fringes of the NFL.

Presume again.

Trapasso is out, and Aussie punter Jy Bond has joined the team.

Bond recently was cut by the Giants, with whom he had signed in March.

And so Trapasso's quest for another chance to score a touchdown and/or touch a scoreboard continues.

Trapasso kicks into realty career
Business First - by Brian Ball
Date: Tuesday, March 8, 2011

Don?t expect A.J. Trapasso to punt a career in the National Football League just yet, even if he has just joined Smith Realty Partners as an agent at the commercial brokerage.

The former four-year punter for the Ohio State University Buckeyes has been hired by real estate veteran and OSU basketball standout Rick Smith?s organization with the understanding his kicking leg may still get some action.

?I like his competitive nature,? said Smith, who first met Trapasso at an OSU athletics alumni golf outing last year, ?and people who like to win.?

Trapasso spent most of the 2009 regular season with the NFL?s Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent before being released. He then signed with the Denver Broncos in early 2010 before that team ?went in a different direction,? as Trapasso explained it, and waived him. Most recently, he has tried out with the Houston Texans and Atlanta Falcons.

?I keep getting opportunities,? said the Pickerington Central High School grad. ?Nothing has panned out yet.?

Certainly, Smith Realty isn?t the only commercial real estate firm in town that has tapped the pipeline of former OSU athletes.

Smith?s previous employer, Crawford Hoying Real Estate Services, has ex-Bucks quarterback Bob Hoying as a principal, and its broker, Brad Hosket, is a basketball alumni. OSU quarterbacks Grey Frey also worked at the firm, as had Craig Krenzel.

At Smith Realty, Trapasso said he has a few commercial listing to work on with Smith and Tim Treasure, an independent broker who shares offices with Smith Realty, to hone his fledgling brokerage skills.

?I?m more or less learning how to do it as much as I can,? Trapasso said. ?Rick is certainly a good teacher.?

What happens if the real estate rookie scores an NFL contract? Smith said Trapasso has a sales and leasing career waiting for him, no matter how long it takes.

?We may lose him for a little bit,? Smith said, ?but he?ll be back.?
