OT Dawand Jones (All B1G, All-American, Cleveland Browns)

DOWN 10 POUNDS FROM LAST SEASON, OHIO STATE RIGHT TACKLE DAWAND JONES FEELS “WAY BETTER” AND HOPES FOR A STANDOUT YEAR

Ohio State right tackle Dawand Jones has a not-so-subtle way of reminding himself of his offseason gains.

Occasionally after the Buckeyes finish practice at preseason camp, Jones will get in extra work with assistant athletic director of sports performance Mickey Marotti. The slightly slimmed down 6-foot-8 tackle will partake in planks lasting 40 seconds to a minute, and he’ll perform the exercise with a 35- to 45-pound plate on his back.

Jones, who said he played last season at around 370 pounds, has since cut 10 pounds from his frame and sits around 360. He keeps the plates on his back as a reminder to himself of what it’s like to compete with extra weight.

“I was like, I’m putting it on my back to see what it’s like,” Jones said Tuesday. “Because I know I can’t go back to that.”

Barring any surprises or injuries in preseason camp, Ohio State’s starting lineup up front already appears to be set: Paris Johnson Jr. at left tackle, Donovan Jackson at left guard, Luke Wypler at center, Matt Jones at right guard and Dawand Jones at right guard.

There’s no shortage of talent in that lineup – Johnson and Jackson were both five-star recruits, Wypler and Matt Jones were both rated as top-two centers in their recruiting classes and Dawand Jones is as physically gifted as any of them – and Day believes in all of their talent.

“Paris and Dawand, they're both very talented. Both have played a lot. Paris, not as much at tackle, and that was the reason why I wanted to get Paris in there last year to play, because even though he was a guard, he still played a lot of football,” Day said. “Matt Jones has played more now. Luke had a great year. And then Donovan is going to be younger, but we think he's very talented. So when you look at those five, you think that those are five really good offensive linemen.”

TREVEYON HENDERSON, PARIS JOHNSON JR., JAXON SMITH-NJIGBA, C.J. STROUD AND DAWAND JONES NAMED PRESEASON ASSOCIATED PRESS ALL-AMERICANS

Five Ohio State players received preseason All-American honors from the Associated Press on Monday.

Wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, running back TreVeyon Henderson and offensive tackle Paris Johnson Jr. are all first-team selections, while quarterback C.J. Stroud and offensive tackle Dawand Jones made the second team.

Ohio State had the second-most players represented across the first and second teams with five, while No. 1-ranked Alabama led the way with six players.

Don't forget the ND has a talented DL. Paris and Donovan (Jackson) both were starting their first games at their respective positions. Dawand got beaten a couple of times (so game one was more than all of last year), by an NFL 1st rounder, so that shows him how to improve. Liked the effort from tOSU OL, especially in the Tresselball part of the game. Didn't really see the push, but the holes were apparently there so the RBs could squirt through. Being on edge, razor's edge, anticipating the count should go away with a few more games. Or at least I hope so. Was less impressed with their pass pro, didn't seem like CJ had his usual time to let his WRs work free. Again, give credit to the ND defensive backfield. At least one first rounder back there (the NW xfer), who was all around the ball. Think he's the one that hit JSN on his way down. Believe for the first game, against a top 5 opponent, the OL acquited themselves well. Coach Frye will earn his salary this week. There's two 'body bag' games between now and Wiscy to iron out any problems. Go Bucks!

He's going to have clean up the false starts, because Leonard is going to dial up a bunch of schemes to throw him off.

On a positive note, seeing him pull with about 6 minutes left in the fourth was a thing of beauty...

Entirely a matter of perspective. The ND players that seemed to melt away in front of him probably have a very different definition of beauty. The secondary players who then had to handle Chop without front 7 help were similarly less than enamored of that sight.

Just sayin': Without mentioning any names, someone on the OL needs to work on those "false starts". His number was was called at least 3 times last night.

In fairness to Dawand, and it’s still frustrating, every false start was when tOSU was rushing to get a play off to prevent a review.

The Miyan Williams catch, an Emeka catch, and I believe a Marvin Harrison catch.

Each time they rushed to snap it to prevent a review and Dawand was out of synch. That’s just the mechanics of those plays that need to get cleaned up….I’d prefer that to random false starts on later downs like 2nd or 3rd. Each of his false starts was on 1st down bc the play before was a chunk gain and we didn’t want to risk the review….

Jones just treated a 6'2' 280lbs Dashaun Mallory like he's a little kid

Sir Gregor at right tackle, a mountain of a man. This is one of many highlight clips where you can see him just dominating someone. There have been so many times I see him just kicking some defensive guys ass where it doesn't even seem fair. This dude was a diamond in the rough recruiting wise...I remember when the recruitniks got so concerned over having to "settle" for Dawand and thinking that we "reached" to get him.

At the time, all of that was probably fair tbh. I was a tad skeptical, but liked the upside with his size and athleticism. But he has taken his God-given ability and turned it into an NFL draft campaign. You love to see that and from all accounts he is a great kid, so you have to be enthralled to see him do what he is doing. He is always the first one to celebrate a TD no matter how it happens, you just have to love Dawand.
