OSU Wrestling (2008 and 2009 NCAA Runners-up)

That match was on BTN last night. It was great to see the team, after falling behind 14-8, take control of the match with a close win by Morrison in the heavyweights, followed by a quick pin by Triggas and another pin by Humphrey.

Ryan got a conduct warning when he protested the ruling of a takedown in the last 10 seconds that gave Jaggers a 2-4 setback, but it looked like a good call.

It's always good to see the Buckeyes get a win in AA.

I watched the meet against sCum and it wasn't even really as close as the final score indicated IMO. I know that one of their guys won by a pin but the other matches that they won were extremely close while the ones that the Buckeyes won left no doubt.

Hopefully, the BTN will televise some of the Big 10 championships.

I had not watched a meet in quite some time so I found it very interesting that almost all of the wrestlers were willing to exchange 1 point for 2 points unless they were close to getting a point for riding time.

The write-up isn't up yet, but the Bucks got another big win today against Illinois, 26-13. Almost the same story as the Michigan meet, except this time we were up 14-8 when Nikko came up. He started the match slowly against an excellent freshman from Illinois, and was down 4-2 after the first period. He chose to be on top, which is incredibly rare for a wrestler to start in the up position, and had the Illinois guy pinned with the exact same move from the Michigan match, in less than 40 seconds. The pin was a huge momentum swing, because it looked like he would probably lose, and might even get majored cause the Illinois guy was taking him down almost effortlessly. He is just dominant on top, as evidenced by his 12 falls out of 19 wins.

WR: No. 6 Buckeyes Down No. 8 Illini, 26-13 - The Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? In his final home match as a Buckeye, senior wrestler J Jaggers went out in style. With Ohio State already having secured the team victory, Jaggers stepped onto the mat vs. Illinois? Ryan Prater at 141 pounds and pinned the Illini in 4:49 to lift the Scarlet and Gray to a 26-13 victory Sunday in St. John Arena.

With the win, Ohio State moves to 14-2 on the season, including a 5-1 mark in the Big Ten. The triumph also marked head coach Tom Ryan?s 150th career victory. In 14 seasons as a head coach (including three at Ohio State), Ryan owns a winning percentage of .609.

BuckeyeXtra - The Columbus Dispatch : Wrestling: Buckeyes strike chord by venting frustration

Wrestling: Buckeyes strike chord by venting frustration
Spirits are high entering final month of season

By Jeremy McLaughlin

Only three times in nearly 90 years of wrestling has Ohio State gone undefeated in Big Ten duals. This year's team believed it would be the fourth.

The Buckeyes returned two national champions and still had momentum from their national runner-up finish a season ago. Plus, top-ranked Iowa was not on the schedule. Ohio State had a chance to go unbeaten and likely share a conference title with the Hawkeyes.

Those hopes for an unbeaten dual record ended with a home loss to Minnesota 16 days ago, but the sixth-ranked Buckeyes had a bigger concern afterward. Frustration was growing between the starters who were consistently winning and those who were inconsistent.

"We had a closed-door meeting with the coaches and the wrestlers, and we vented," 141-pound senior J Jaggers said. "We let everything out."
Whatever was said has made a difference. Ohio State has wrestled with passion in its past four duals, winning each convincingly. The Buckeyes appear to be peaking as they head to duals at Northwestern and Wisconsin this weekend and for the Big Ten and NCAA tournaments in March.

"The way some of the guys have responded, the way Nikko Triggas (125) in particular has responded, it's incredible," Jaggers said. "It goes to show how much we care about our performance, but also each other's well-being that we are comfortable enough to tell each other when they aren't doing the right things."

Triggas was one who was up and down earlier. He, along with Jaggers, struggled with weight management until recently. Now that it is under control, Triggas has more energy and his improvement is noticeable. He has two pins in the past two matches.

"Nikko has been doing a lot of work the last six weeks," coach Tom Ryan said. "We know sometimes you don't reap the benefit of something immediately, but all the work he's put in with (assistant coach) Lou (Roselli), we're finally starting to see some of the benefits."

Ryan gave similar praise to Dave Rella (174), who won Sunday and lost 3-2 to top-ranked Steve Luke of Michigan on Friday.

"I kind of fell into a slump early on and it was hard to get out," Rella said. "I've been trying to focus on little things every week, and I think my wrestling is starting to come together now more than ever."

Rella and Triggas, along with Jason Johnstone (157), Cody Gardner (197) and Corey Morrison (heavyweight), will be counted on to provide points at the Big Ten tournament and at the NCAA tournament if they qualify.

Any points they tally could be significant at the national tournament, which will be held March 19-21 in St. Louis. Ohio State already expects high placement from Reece Humphrey (133), two-time All-American Lance Palmer (149), Colt Sponseller (165) and defending national champion Mike Pucillo (184). Each is ranked in the top four of their weight classes.

Since losing a 14-3 major decision, Nikko has won three straight matches by pin. He sparked the Bucks comeback victory against scUM and opened up the Illinois match with his pin. However, none of those victories came against the caliber opponent he will see next week- Brandon Precin is the number 3 ranked wrestler at 125lb in the country. I am anxious to see how Nikko can do against a highly ranked opponent, now that he finally seems to have gotten his weight under control and is wrestling with confidence.

I am curious to know what is going on at 197. Cody Gardner, a very highly rated freshman transfer from Virginia Tech, started out the season wrestling there for us, and was doing relatively well. Starting with Purdue, for some reason, Jason Cook has been wrestling that weight class for us, and to my untrained eye it certainly seems that Gardner is the superior wrestler. I would love to know if he was having significant weight issues, is injured, or if there is something else going on.

Big matchups this weekend:

Northwestern- Friday, 7pm:

125- Nikko Triggas vs (3) Brandon Precin- interested to see if Nikko can continue his improved wrestling against one of the best in the class.
141- (14) J Jaggers vs (16) Keith Sulzer- J can beat anyone on any given day, but has also proven that he can lose to anyone. He has improved as the season went on and he got his weight issues under control, hopefully he continues this against a good NW wrestler.
157- (17) Jason Johnstone vs (14) Jason Welch
184- Maybe the most highly anticipated matchup of the season for any wrestlers from any weight classes. The last two national champions at 184 pounds, (2) Mike Pucillo takes on (1) Jake Herbert. Both wrestlers are undefeated and, for the most part, largely untested. Herbert won the national title two years ago and then took an Olympic redshirt year, opening the class up for Mike to win it last year. The winner of this match will be the #1 seed at the Big Ten tournament, where they will, barring a MAJOR upset, meet again (and probably in the national finals as well). These two wrestlers are thought to be head and shoulders above the competitors at 184. From looking around at other wrestling forums (http://www.thewrestlingtalk.com/college-wrestling/20678-jake-herbert-v-mike-pucillo-discussion.html), most college wrestling fanatics think Herbert will win by 2-6 points, but I'm not going to underestimate Mike here.

Wisconsin, Sunday 2pm (Live BTN Coverage):
141- (14) J Jaggers v (1) Zach Tanelli- the real test for Jeff this weekend will come on Sunday, as he takes on the number 1 ranked wrestler in the country at 141, Zach Tanelli. Tanelli is 22-3 overall, and is riding a 15 match win streak, including a victory over #8 Mike Thorn last Friday. If J can wrestle with the same passion we saw Sunday, it will be a great match.
149- (4) Lance Palmer v (5) Kyle Ruschell- Palmer won a 2-0 decision at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite in December, with an escape and a major riding time advantage being the only points scored. Should be an excellent match, especially right after 141.
165- (2) Colt Sponseller v (8) Andrew Howe- Howe is undefeated in dual action, with a record of 11-0. However, he has not faced anyone in the Big Ten this season as good as Sponseller... mainly because there is no one else in the Big Ten as good as Sponseller.

Really wish I could get to see the Northwestern match, as there should be some very good matchups, particularly 184.

Interesting night for the wrestling Buckeyes. I guess most importantly we got the dual meet win, 23-18 over Northwestern. However, I can't say it was a great night for the Bucks. Touching on the matches that I highlighted in my previous post, Nikko Triggas got technical fall-ed, which means he lost by more than 15 points, which certainly wasn't what we were hoping for after his Big Ten wrestler of the week award. It almost seems like, this year, he is either going to pin you or he is going to lose big. Hopefully he can go on a run at nationals. J Jaggers won a 4-2 overtime victory against Keith Sulzer, with a takedown in the sudden-death overtime period. Excited to see him wrestle against Wisconsin and Zach Tanelli on Sunday. At 157, Jason Johnstone lost a very close match against Jason Welch, 9-7 in sudden death overtime. Johnstone was up 7-4 early in the third, but Welch had a takedown and a 1:06 riding time advantage to send it to OT, where he scored the winning takedown. Lastly, the most highly anticipated match-up of the season didn't happen. Coach Ryan sent out a true freshman at 184 instead of Mike Pucillo, and he got pinned. However, Pucillo wrestled at 197, and got the pin in that weight class, which gave the Bucks a 1 point lead heading into the heavyweight match, which Corey Morrison won with a major decision. While I was incredibly disappointed to not get to see the results of the 184 battle of the titans, I respect that Coach Ryan did what he thought he needed to do to win the dual by shifting people around weight classes. This will make the Big 10 tournament all that much more exciting, as we get to see Herbert and Pucillo wrestle there for the first time.

Lance Palmer didn't wrestle in this meet, because of an injury. I really hope that he is ready to go by Sunday, cause I am greatly looking forward to him wrestling Ruschell. Also can't wait to see J wrestle Tanelli, and Colt vs Howe should be a decent match. Reminder that this Sunday's match is being aired live on BTN at 1 pm.

PARK RIDGE, Ill. ? Conference officials announced the preliminary seeds for the 2009 Big Ten Wrestling Championships on Monday. The pre-seeds are determined by a vote amongst the conference's head wrestling coaches after consideration of regular-season results.

This year's Big Ten Wrestling Championships will take place at the Bryce Jordan Center on March 7-8. The official Big Ten Championships bracket will be set on Friday, March 6.

Five different schools are represented as No. 1 seeds in the 10 weight classes. Iowa and Wisconsin lead the way with the most top seeds at three apiece, while Northwestern features two wrestlers atop the preliminary seeding chart. Overall, of the 10 No. 1 seeds, nine rank among the top three in the nation in the latest USA Today/NWCA/InterMat Poll.

Iowa's Daniel Dennis (24-2 at 133), Brent Metcalf (28-0 at 149) and Daniel Erekson (18-6 at Hwt.) represent the Hawkeyes as top pre-seeds for this year's event. The Hawkeyes were Big Ten regular season dual champions and are currently the No. 1 nationally ranked team. Metcalf is in search of his second consecutive 149 lbs. conference title after winning at last year's competition where his performance also earned him Wrestler of the Championships honors. Dennis and Metcalf are the top-ranked wrestlers in the land at their respective weight classes, while Erekson currently ranks seventh among the national leaders.
this site also has all the preliminary seedings for the Big 10 tournament which I thought was going to be televised on the BTN at 2 p.m. on Saturday but the finals are not until Sunday so it must be 2 p.m. Sunday.
Sort of surprise at Ohio State did not receive more #1 seeds:( but sometimes you're better off being unseeded similar to our last year's Champion.
