Triggas closer to his goal

Saturday, April 12, 2008 Pat Galbincea

Plain Dealer Reporter
It's been the dream of Ohio State freshman wrestler Nikko Triggas to become an Olympic champion in Greco-Roman wrestling.
Triggas took a step closer to fulfilling that dream Friday by dominating the 121-pound weight class in the 2008 ASICS University division of the Greco-Roman National Championships at the University of Akron.
Equally impressive were the talented Mango brothers, Spenser and Ryan, from St. Louis. Spenser Mango, 21, was voted outstanding wrestler in the University division after successfully defending his national title at 132 pounds, and Ryan, 16, won his second Greco-Roman title in the FILA Cadet division at 119 pounds.
@StoryAd
Triggas, a native of Moraga, Calif., near San Francisco, is a two-time Junior National champion in Greco-Roman wrestling, a style which does not allow an opponent to grab below the waist. He scored a technical fall and pin against Barkac Jeremiah of Nebraska in the quarterfinals, and benefited from false starts and reversals to beat Miguel Pena of the U.S. Marines - who last weekend won the Northeast Olympic Regional Trials in Brockport, N.Y. - by scores of 6-0 and 2-1.

Congrats to Nikko Triggas and Reece Humphrey for winning their weight class at the college nationals in Greco-Roman and Freestyle, respectively. They, along with Tommy Rowlands, advance to the Olympic trials in June. Possibly three Buckeyes to Beijing!!

Magrum earns Dave Schultz Award
By MATTHEW HORN
Sports Writer

OAK HARBOR ? Cody Magrum?s brawn is no secret after three consecutive state wrestling championships.

But the Ohio State-bound Oak Harbor senior also impresses with his brain.
Magrum was recently named the Ohio recipient of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award.

Schultz earned an Olympic Gold Medal in 1984 and was a world champion.

?Dave Schultz is a name almost everyone in wrestling knows,? Magrum said. ?He?s one of the best wrestlers to ever live. That?s how you get your name out there ? when a big-time guy?s representatives pick me it?s awesome.?

The award goes to the wrestler who best demonstrates excellence in wrestling,
scholastic achievement, character, citizenship and community service in each state. Recipients have the opportunity to attend a leadership camp June 18-21 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

?It?s a real honor,? Magrum said. ?I?m really excited and looking forward (to the camp). It?s awesome that out of everyone in Ohio I got picked.?

Magrum will receive the award at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and his name will go on the wall there.

Solon's All-Star Henry will wrestle for OSU

Wednesday, May 14, 2008 Pat Galbincea

Plain Dealer Reporter
Solon's Garrett Henry, a 119-pound Division I state wrestling champion and Plain Dealer seven-county All-Star, will sign a national letter of intent Friday with Ohio State University.
Henry, fifth in the state at the same weight as a junior, had a storybook ending to his season in which he won 46 of 50 matches. He placed third in the Massillon Perry district the week before state but was a dominant force in his first three state matches, then used outstanding leg wrestling to tie up Westlake sophomore Nick Lawrence in the finals to win a 1-0 decision.
He said he had narrowed his college choices to two Big Ten schools, Indiana and Ohio State.

Reece Humphrey (Indianapolis, Ind./Ohio State University) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for May 20-26.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.

Humphrey outlasted Iowa?s Daniel Dennis in the freestyle finals at 60 kg/132 lbs. to win the University World Team Trials on May 23 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs
Nice Work!

The Buckeye wrestling team has accomplished a lot in the short time that head coach Tom Ryan has called Columbus home. With back-to-back top ten finishes at the NCAA Tournament, the top recruiting class in 2007, and a title contending team returning; the vision he brought to program is becoming a reality. Even though wrestling season ended in March with a second place finish at the NCAA Tournament, Ohio State is still writing headlines.
Nikko Triggas, Reece Humphrey, and Tommy Rowlands each won freestyle national championships in March. Humphrey followed by winning his weight class last weekend at the University Team Trials and will represent the United States in Greece this summer. On the biggest stage, Tommy Rowlands has qualified for the finals of the Olympic Trials in June and has the chance to wrestle for the United States at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.

Logan Stieber: Latest Sign in an Emerging Trend
By Kevin Schlosser
With some great OSU teams in the early nineties; three top-five team finishes made the Buckeyes the up-and-coming team of the day. Somewhere along the line that momentum was lost and the team dropped out of the top-ten, then the top-twenty, and into the thirties. What wasn?t lost was Tommy Rowlands watching those teams and growing up an Ohio State wrestling fan. When he committed to OSU as a member of the class of 2000; the Buckeyes were back on the rise.
As a two-time national champion Rowlands led the Buckeyes to sixteenth, sixth, fifteenth, and third place team finishes at the NCAA Tournament between 2001 and 2004. In the process of becoming the first four-time All American in school history; Rowlands became a role model and inspiration to the youth wrestlers of Ohio. To keep the momentum going, the Buckeyes signed one of the top recruiting classes in the country and Rowlands joined the coaching staff to show them the way.

The most amazing thing about the current success that we are enjoying is that it could, very soon, get a whole lot better. With J. Jaggers, Lance Palmer, and Mike Pucillo this year we have 3 good shots at national titles. Colt Sponsellor had an excellent freshman season and he is a beast on the mat. Nikko Triggas and Reece Humphrey have had excellent off-seasons, with Humphrey winning the University Freestyle Nationals and the University World Team Trials. Triggas, at the FILA Junior/University World Team Trials, lost in the finals of both the Junior Greco and University Greco divisions.

EDIT: And as I continued my research, I unearthed these trivial facts: Cody Gardner, the top ranked 215 pound wrestler in the country in 2007, is transferring from VT to tOSU after redshirting last season. Also, Dave Rella, who started for PSU the last two seasons, has been given a full release from PSU and will most probably start for tOSU at 174 pounds.

Additionally, the high school wrestling talent currently in the state is incredible, and a lot of the top wrestlers in the country have OSU bloodlines. Looking at InterMat Wrestling's Final 2007-2008 rankings, regardless of class, bodes very well for the future. Currently committed to the program we have:

HS Class of 2008:
145- Tony Jameson ranked 12th best regardless of graduating class in the 145lb division
189- Cody Magrum ranked 9th best regardless of graduating class
285- John Hiles ranked 10th best regardless of graduating class

HS Class of 2010:
119- Logan Stieber- ranked best wrestler in the country at 119lbs, regardless of graduating class

Uncommitted talent in the state is just ridiculous as well. (NOTE: Only underclassmen have been listed here. All rankings are national and regardless of high school graduating class. I have no clue where we stand with any of these wrestlers, just that these are some of the top wrestlers in the country and are from Ohio.)

103- Hunter Stieber, the younger brother of Logan, is ranked as the 2nd best wrestler in the nation at 103, despite being a freshman. Ty Mitch (Class of 2010, Aurora) is ranked as the 11th best wrestler. Johnni DiJulius (Class of 2011, Walsh Jesuit) is ranked as the 12th best wrestler at this weight. Gus Sako (Class of 2010, St. Eds) is ranked 13th.

112- Ohio is even more stacked here. David Taylor (Class of 2009, St. Paris Graham) is ranked as the top wrestler at this weight, although rumors are circulating he will be attending Iowa State. Jamie Clark (Class of 2010, St. Eds) is the third best wrestler at this weight. Sam White (Class of 2009, Massillon Perry) is ranked as the 7th best wrestler in the country at 112.

119- In addition to Logan holding the top spot, Zach Neibert (Class of 2009, St. Paris Graham) is ranked 6th.

130- Seth Horner (Class of 2009, Massillon Perry) is ranked 12th in the country. Brad Squire (Class of 2010, Wadsworth) is ranked 13th. Zac Hancock (Class of 2009, Troy Christian) is ranked 17th.

135- tOSU looks to be set here, as Collin Palmer, the younger of brother of current tOSU wrestler Lance Palmer, is the top ranked wrestler in this weight class as a junior. Remember Lance's comment when he committed, "I want all the great wrestlers in Ohio to wrestle at Ohio State."

140- Kyle Lang (Class of 2009, Brecksville) is the 20th ranked wrestler in the country at 140.

145- Zach Toal (Class of 2009, Troy Christian) is ranked 11th.

171- Chris Phillips (Class of 2011, Monroeville) is ranked the 7th best wrestler in the country at 171. He hails from the same school as Logan and Hunter Stieber.

215- Orlando Scales (Class of 2009, Elder) is the 9th ranked wrestler in the country.

Again, I have no idea if we can get any of the prospects I listed here, although you certainly have to like our chances with Collin Palmer. Regardless, things look very very good for Ohio State Wrestling for a long long time.

I don't follow high school wrestling "recruiting" that much so excuse my ignorance with this question. Does the above rankings mean that the kid is the best at that weight class and then when it says "regardless of class" does that mean that that high school wrestler has that ranking including all wrestlers in the United States. I guess to ask it better is Jameson the best wrestler in the country at 145 and also the 12th best wrestler in the country. Thanks. If that is indeed the case, our wrestling program could be on a very nice long ride.

The 12th best regardless of class means 12th best regardless of graduating class. So Tony Jameson is the 12th best wrestler at 145 pounds in the country, not the 12th best wrestler in the country.

However, many people are predicting that Logan Stieber will be the top ranked wrestler regardless of weight class for the graduating class of 2010.
