OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

The thing I like about being able to have Buford, Lighty, Turner at the wings is that they are SUCH great rebounders. Crater is a tremendous distributer and Mullens (a true 5/center) in the paint would be a great team. Keeping Koufos and maybe bringing Buford along slowly as a 6/7 man with Diebler would be an even BETTER team.

what did you think preseason this year?

I had us in the 20-25 range...Finishing the season I would say that we are in that range...If we would of got shit together 2 weeks earlier we could of been a sweet 16 team...

And I still believe that without the hiccup in terms of team chemistry during the middle of the season we would of gelled a little earlier in the season...

The one guys I might be a little high on is Buford, but there is reason for that IMO...He can score in multiple ways, and I think with an offseason in the weight room and time to improve his game he is going to be that good...I don't see any reason why he can't put up 12 pts/game next year...

If KK leaves I see points like this...

Crater 4
Lighty 9
Turner 11
Buford 12
Mullens 14

Diebler 8
Hill 2
Lauderdale 2
Wallace 2
Offut 2

That adds up to about 66, and I think that if we implement the 4 guard lineup that numbers could be higher than that and we might have 4 or 5 double figure scores with Lighty and Diebler getting double digits as well...

Once the season is over and all the declarations are made in terms of the NBA draft I will have a better idea in terms of teams and will put some rankings with teams...

Right now I am thinking 2nd in the big ten behind Purdue...

I like the four guard set but I would love to see KK return.....

Agreed, but count me in as very optimistic about next year either way...

Top 15 team IMO...
I truly love your optimism but I am just trying to be a little more objective:)
I think Dayton was probably of the teams that we could play and have the 4 smalls and one big work really well. If KK does leave and I am starting to think that he might not but if he goes and we do have to play the smaller lineup we are going to have to play zone defense again next year and you know what that does to defensive rebounding.

The zone will be fine against some teams but will hurt us just like it has this year. Even if KK does stay we will probably get hurt rebounding. BJ cannot get all of them.

One of the other things that is really going to hurt us, especially at the beginning of next year and possibly all, is the loss of Butler. Why Butler might that be a true leader in the sense of the word he is one of the few guys who is willing to step up and take the big shot. I just don't see Hill as an outside threat and I don't think Crater is known for his outside shooting.

I think perhaps we will be ranked in the top 25 no matter what but it probably will be between 20-25. I also see the team making the dance with or without KK but I am extremely concerned about the PG position. There are not many freshmen who can step in and really play that position. I know you, and probably OBJ for the most part, disagree but that is just my opinion.

It's actually pretty hard to improve while sitting on the bench, which is why Koufos, like Cook, would likely spend most of his rookie season in the NBADL. It's his choice, but I really think he can improve to a top ten pick if he stays for next season.
Here you go from Padraig's post #812 of the same thread. This is my belief also that you can improve yourself by "sitting on the bench" even in the NBA. You might have to go to the Developmental League but you still get much more practice time. You should really read the article on Cleveland.com on how Chris Jent works with the players before and after practice for hours and hours just shooting.

With NCAA restrictions on practices, coaching / contact, limited competition to practice against, how much developmental difference by Kosta (Oden, Conley, etc., etc.) would a year in school vs. a Summer with an NBA Team be? Probably differs for different players. And as always, there are plenty of other factors that go into the decision as we see with next season's football team. But saying that KK absolutely should return because he be better prepared for the NBA after a second year in college may not necessarily be true.

I understand and respect that too...There were in house problems in terms of chemistry more with this team than I envision next year...

This is a position where you can be in and dictate the other team...Like I mentioned the other day, if our four guy is going to be guarded by a 6'8'' guy with no where the athleticism then we will be able to do lots of things and dictate...Yeah we might get hurt on the boards some but should also lead to easier buckets on the offensive end.

The zone will be fine against some teams but will hurt us just like it has this year. Even if KK does stay we will probably get hurt rebounding. BJ cannot get all of them.
The zone was fine this year...Look at the numbers...The length we possess is great in guarding the perimeter...We should also have more stregth on guys like Turner, Diebler, Lighty, and we have Buford coming in and that will help out rebounding from the wing, and Lauderdale was our best rebounder on the team and he will be getting more minutes next year and BJ would of been the best rebounder on the team if he was here last year...So all in all we wont be any worse and there is some hope that we will be better, especially if we play a lineup of Dallas and BJ...Also don't forget that while Hunter and KK got some blocks, they don't posses the shot blocking ability that Mullens does...

One of the other things that is really going to hurt us, especially at the beginning of next year and possibly all, is the loss of Butler. I agree that the lose of Butler is going to hurt, and hurt real bad early, but I don't think in terms of taking a big shot...I thought it was really turner who stepped up this year down the stretch in terms of making big plays when it counted...I think with Lighty, Buford, and a pg that is more willing to create for teammates and not looking for his own shot is going to help the guys off the ball as well...On Craters shooting ability I think many will be semi surprised with him...I am not going to say he can light it up like Jamar, but if left open he will knock it down, but he is a pass first PG and not a scorer, even his coach said he would like to see him shoot the ball more...Hill is not an outside threat, but will be a solid 15/20 minute contributor next year...

I think perhaps we will be ranked in the top 25 no matter what but it probably will be between 20-25. I agree about ranking and making the tourney...I also think a top 3 finish in the big ten is likely...

As for the pg position...The thing with Crater is there is not a lot of info out there on him...But what I can gather is this year at prep school is really going to benefit him...He played more games than regular high schools do, he was in a structured program like a college program, he was playing against kids that are going to be playing on the college level and with kids that are very good...He was the QB, never heard anything about him struggling, just that he should shoot the ball more and had high number assist games, which is exactly what we are going to need from the point next year as we will have scorers on the wing, and have Mullens in the paint next year...I am not saying he is going to be like Conley, he doesn't have the ability to slice down the lane and hit the crazy shots that Conley hit, but what he can do is control the offense, create shots for people and take care of the ball, while posting high assist totals and hit the open shot if teams back off of him...

Also to add...Most in Michigan had Crater as equal to or a better player than Kelvin Grady (Michigan frosh) 6pts 3assts and that was when Crater was only a junior, so with an extra year at prep school, i would be fine if Crater could come in and get 6pts, and put up something like 5 or 6 assts...

If Kosta stays we only have one scholarship available for next year and there is a lot of speculation now regarding Babbitt, Holloway, and Simmons. It is a nice problem to have but I assume it's one of them would pull the trigger that would leave the other two out in the cold and I really would like Babbitt but I wouldn't mind the other two either.

If either of these three would come, it would limit our scholarships next year to the number of players who would declare for the NBA which would most likely be two (Mullens and Kosta).

It will be interesting to see it all play out...I think other than a juco we are set for next year...I really don't have my hopes up to high on the Babbitt news, and the Holloway situation doesn't see too likely...

I agree...We would go with one on the wing and would need a big guy for sure...

Then the thing is to get the 4 guys in 10' we have already we would need Buford to be gone by his junior year, which I truly believe that he will be for sure, and for us to be able to ink a fifth player, like maybe Payne who I am really starting to like we would have to have Turner leave early or someone else...

I just got done watching the Northland/West South game and I really like Moore's game. He can create, has great length, and really has a solid jumper, and nice floater in the lane...He is still skinny and a year in prep school could really help that...But we could still really use two big guys in the 09' class, because all we are going to have coming back is Dallas and Madsen...
I will take your positive evaluation on Moore but this must mean that the staff does not think their chances with Dumes are very good because that would really cut into the number of scholarships available for '10. I don't know about Buford leaving after his sophomore year. I know that he is highly ranked and maybe I am just grasping for three years of him.

On a separate issue, I wonder if we can get a sticky post similar to the one that OBJ had posted that broke down the rosters for the next 3-4 years with the possibilities of the number of scholarships that might be available.
