OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

2008 recruiting

It was interesting to note in the Dispatch article which talked about PJ Hill that Groce actually went to that "All-Star" JUCO tournament to look for some guys for the 2008 class. Maybe they aren't done for 2008.

eBoss Hoops Post-Summer Top 100

scout ($)

without giving the particulars (being $ and all), i'll just comment that buford is a bit low, crater is about right, and eboss apparently knows what he's doing with offutt. offutt is the real deal.

Would you take Samuels or Monroe over BJ? What do you think about Kevin Jones ranking?
Thanks for all of your insight.

Assuming you are only going to get one year out of BJ, there might be a couple of guys that I would take over him for that freshman year. I think he has some maturing to do on the basketball court and unfortunately he doesn't face the level of competition in HS that will enable him to grow much in that area. I think there will be several guys in that '08 class that may have better freshman years because of that.

Long term, every NBA scout is going to tell you BJ is #1 because of his size and athleticism. He's about as close to GO in size and athelticism as you are going to get in a kid that age.

I don't think he's as much of a project as you think. He still has a year before he gets here. He may not be in the same capacity as Greg Oden, a once a century type of player....but, he will be very active. He's done well at the camps among his peers.

I wouldn't label him as a project at all. Obviously he has some areas of his game that he can improve on just like any player his age. I do think he will struggle more and take longer to adapt to the college game than some of the other '08 guys will because the level of competition he will face night in and night out in HS won't be anywhere near what he will see in college. This year he will face double and triple teams from guys in the 6'-6'5" range. Next year he will be facing doubles from guys that are 6'10" and the speed of the game will be much faster. I still think he will be an all B10 first teamer and likely 1st pick in the draft, but there are a few guys who will be more prepared to succeed in their first year of college.

diebler and buford will be absolutely deadly from deep. i would like to see one more sharpshooter. if kosta stays, the team will have it.

I respect your opinion:) but I think that is wishful thinking regarding KK. I just can't see him staying more than one year and that is why I am hopeful that Matta can work his magic and get Kevin Jones.

Sure I'll name a few guys who I think could easily have more successful FR years and make a bigger impact for their team than BJ. A couple have already been mentioned in Monroe and Samuals. Samuals took it to BJ earlier this summer as evidenced by this quote:

"Samuels was absolutely dominating down low against Mullens and just powered his way to the rim with nimble feet and brute strength. The future Louisville post player did whatever he wanted to do against a much bigger and longer Mullens."

I also think Holiday and Evans are a couple of guards that will make a big splash as freshman. There is a reason Mullens is ranked in the 4-9 range in this class and the four guys I mentioned are almost always ranked higher and its because of where there current skill level and consistancy is. However, when you look at NBA draft status, BJ is almost always the #1 pick because he has the greatest potential. In my mind he isn't going to be quite as college ready as some others because the level of competition he has and will face in HS just isn't that high. I think he will have an outstanding FR year, but I think some others will do better.

Some of the posters in this forum who's judgment I value highly with take BJ over Samuels so I would just let that quote ride. That is one person's opinion and I don't even know who that person might be.

Regarding the other guys that you mentioned I will use the same argument that you used with regard to Mullens have a hard time adjusting to the college game because he will be going up against bigger and stronger guys. Freshman who are 6'5"-6'7" will have a much harder time going up against college juniors and seniors the same height because they are also much stronger and have been in the college game which should make them better defenders then who the incoming freshman have faced during their high school careers.

I guess I just trust the opinion of a few of the guys on this forum more than you. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I guess we shall wait and see.
