THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

On the eve of the national championship football game, Buckeye nation is rampant with thoughts of a second title in four years. But the football faithful briefly put aside their tailgating plans and Gator voodoo dolls yesterday as 5,155 fans watched the Ohio State men?s hockey team extend its winning streak to four games with a comefront-behind 3-2 victory over Alaska Fairbanks in Value City Arena.

Ohio State coming of age on defense

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Defense has been the backbone of Ohio State hockey in recent years, never more so than last season, when the offense suffered a season-long slump. Add in a pair of inexperienced goalies to start this season and there was significant weight on the shoulders of the five returning defensemen.

OHIO STATE 4 MIAMI U. 4
OSU hockey bounces back twice from 2-goal deficits

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Freshman Joseph Palmer was shaky in net for the first two periods. A heated rival and top-10 team opened a two-goal lead, then another. A fragile team would have folded. Ohio State has been such a team for much of the past year and a half, but there is evidence to suggest a growing resolve. Certainly, there was last night.

Buckeyes waste opportunities in loss to RedHawks

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

OXFORD, Ohio ? Bryce Anderson?s wrist shot hit the inside of the goal post and bounced out. Matt McIlvane and Tommy Goebel had the goalie on the ice and an open net but could not beat a prone opponent. Finally, as Ohio State tried to mount another charge, the puck hugged the boards and slid past defenseman Jason DeSantis, out of the offensive zone.

Went to the game and it was a ball. Miami has a sweet place, small but far nicer than that cowbarn we used to play in.

OSU is lacking depth. They have a couple of good players, but they are smallish and not all that talented top to bottom.

Miami has some kids that are studs. They Capt is great and there was a Ohio kid from Chagrin Falls that was a player. Several others that look like they were about 5'8" and weighed 220. Fire plugs.

One thing I noticed was that OSU shots were weak. Stupid little flick shots from the top of the circle. Miami was packing it in to the middle, they should have let it rip. Too much waiting on the perfect pass, perfect play. Shoot it at the net and get a rebound.

Buckeyes eager to solve power-play problem

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Ohio State men?s hockey team is scoring with regularity, almost a goal per game more than last season. During the past two months, the Buckeyes have killed penalties with aplomb, played the strong defense for which the program has been known and received solid ? at times spectacular ? goaltending. They are playing well in almost all phases.

OHIO STATE MEN?S HOCKEY
Trio?s play puts punch in another OSU line

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Domenic Maiani missed an empty net late in the game Saturday and heard about it from his Ohio State teammates before he even returned to the bench.
"On the back-check, we were yelling at him," Tom Fritsche said.
In truth, the ribbing never ends, from Maiani?s poor aim to Tommy Goebel?s lack of housekeeping skills ("He?s a slob," Maiani said) to Fritsche?s low point total ("Buzz is the grinder on our line right now," Goebel said). The three have an easy rapport off the ice, and it paid off as soon as they were able to play together.

Ohio State swept Northern M*ch*g@n this weekend. 3-2 on friday and 4-1 on Saturday. With the sweep this weekend and the four points that go with it OSU has moved into a tie for fifth place in the CCHA standings with the University of Nebraska Omaha. The Buckeye will travel to Omaha next weekend for a two-game series with UNO.

Buckeyes complete the sweep

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

For about 30 minutes last night, the Ohio State men?s hockey team fought for pucks in the corner, moved it tape to tape and blocked shots in their own end. The Buckeyes clearly were the best team on the ice. For the other 30 minutes, freshman Joseph Palmer swallowed up shots and sprawled for those that weren?t routine. He was clearly the best goalie on the ice.
