Oscar Pistorius : .8 secs from qualifying for the normal Olympics

Hell, sign him up for the Browns. He cant break his leg in a motorcycle accident, he can't blow out both patellar tendons at the same time, and he can't get a staph infection in his leg. He's damn near Browns-proof! (Although I guess if he got nailed in the face with a penatly flag, he's still kinda screwed.)

Double amputee DQ'd in much-hyped 400-meter race
Posted: Sunday July 15, 2007 6:30PM; Updated: Sunday July 15, 2007 7:09PM

SHEFFIELD, England (AP) -- Double-amputee Oscar Pistorius' much-anticipated debut against elite able-bodied competition fizzled Sunday when he placed seventh in the 400 meters in heavy rain and then was disqualified.

Pistorius, who runs with carbon fiber blades for his lower legs, finished in 47.65 seconds, well behind Angelo Taylor's winning time of 45.25 at the British Grand Prix meet. Pistorius was called for running out of his lane.

"He began running four years ago to treat a rugby injury, and nine months later won the 200 at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece." What do you say, Steve, sign him up for the Springboks? The Rugby World Cup is only a few months away.

or provide some sort of Wile E. Coyote-esque advantage. If deemed merely compensatory, he should be allowed to try to qualify.

The coyote was never able to learn from his mistakes. I should hope that this guy would be able to learn from the coyote's mistakes.

SI.com - More Sports - IAAF: Pistorius' prosthetics may be advantage - Monday July 16, 2007 11:41AM

The prosthetic legs double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius uses provide less air resistance than normal legs, the IAAF said Monday.
Pistorius, who wears curved, carbon-fiber prosthetic legs, finished second in Rome on Friday and last against elite able-bodied athlete at the British Grand Prix on Sunday. He hopes to compete at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Pretty much what I expected from IAAF. With that statement it is pretty much a guarantee the IAAF will make the ruling that he will be ineligible for the 2008 Olympics sometime in the future.

In any case, he still needs to take .6 seconds off his 400 time to even qualify for the Olympics. If he can't do that then all his complaining is for nothing.

Federation expected to rule Pistorius ineligible for Beijing Games

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- Track and field's ruling body is expected to declare Saturday that double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius is ineligible to compete in the Beijing Olympics because his prosthetic racing blades give him an unfair advantage.

Last month, German professor Gert-Peter Brueggemann, who conducted tests on the prosthetic limbs, said the blades give the 21-year-old South African a competitive edge.

An official statement by the International Association of Athletics Federations announcing the finding was first expected Thursday. However, the ruling has been delayed by two days to give Pistorius and his advisers time to respond.

"There will be no official announcement until the 12th," IAAF spokesman Nick Davies said from Monte Carlo, Monaco.

The IAAF adopted a rule last summer prohibiting the use of any "technical aids" deemed to give an athlete an advantage over another.
