Oregon at tOSU, Sep 11th, Noon ET on Fox

Perspective.

VA Tech came into Ohio Stadium in 2014 and made our offensive line look like shit. Poor Billy Price probably had nightmares that night. It was the second loss in three games and people on this site were wondering if Urban had lost his touch. Four months later that offensive line mauled their way through the playoffs.

Now Ryan Day has lot two of his last three games. I don’t know the end result of the season but I expect that he’s going to make some demands for accountability and improvement.

Watching the Football Fever show on channel 6. Man, does Kirk Barton suck. Dude mumbles, stutters and says little of consequence. I wish Jay Richardson wasn't obsessed with creating fake schools because he should be on this show.

He’s bad, for sure.

Did we really have zero sacks today? I never thought I’d see the day Oregon manhandles OSU in the trenches. Probably the single most concerning aspect of today.

Remember losing to Purdue in 2018? Schiano and Grinch hit the media with the Ol' "back to fundamentals, we'll simply things, really work on it".... Many people, including posters on this board, had perhaps gotten a bit too short sighted in their belief that things would be fixed overnight.

Well... nothing was fixed that season.... What I'm saying is, I'm seeing the same things here. Alignment and leverage problems, zone/match pass-offs, predictable calls, poor technique.... Things good coaches with focused and disciplined defenses simply don't do.

There is no reason or evidence to believe there will be a significant turnaround under this current defensive coaching staff....
In 2018, the defensive coaches were:
  • Greg Schiano, co-DC
  • Alex Grinch, co-DC; safeties
  • Larry Johnson, defensive line
  • Taver Johnson, cornerbacks
  • Billy Davis, linebackers
Except for Johnson, who doesn't seem to be part of the problem, all those guys are from the 2018 team are gone. If there's been a nearly complete overhaul of the defensive coaching staff since 2018, then why are we still seeing the same fundamental problems in 2021? Is it simply a different set of bad coaches?

Well there was an overhaul again in 2020. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Hafley turned one of the worst OSU defenses in recent memory into one of the best with literally the exact same players. Then Hafley left after a year and here we are. As for why our hires seem to be so feast or famine? Hard to say.

All I can say is I'm seeing more and more that we have some really spoiled, entitled fans. I'm not pointing fingers at anyone here, because for the most part, people here on BP tend to be more knowledgeable and realistic, but My God, the comments I'm seeing on other sites disgust me! As much as I hate to say it, I'm starting to see some of the Hate for CJ has nothing to do with his performance, and I'll leave it at that.

Alright, well I will do my candid post-game assessment while it is fresh in my mind, because I am not going to go back and rewatch that one.

3. SET A FUCKING EDGE! Good god, there is no way the edge should have been that damn open all game. You can't tell me we don't have the players to do that, this is purely X's and O's with our coaching. Hell, we didn't even have a CB out there to attempt a tackle.

That's a wrap. It's just a football game and life goes on, I will still watch every game, win or lose. I am preparing for the worst though after seeing the performance today, particularly because I don't think the defense can be fixed. Luckily "the worst" for us is probably a 3-4 loss season, which most fan bases would consider a great year. Go Bucks and on to the next one.

This is what drives me nuts. It's the single most damning thing a defense can allow imo. Not sure how the red flags haven't been going off with Miyan and Henderson running the ball in practice.

I think the word 'fundamental' offers its own sort of answer. Because when you find defenses that struggle with the things I've seen and made mention of here just from yesterday's game (Gap exchange, zone replacement, crack replacement, depth, alignment and role issues) then those teams, the overwhelming majority of the time, have ineffective coaches.

Scheme is one thing, calls are one thing, but when you can't coach your vision of how a defense should work into your players and work to make it 2nd nature, even the most simple of things, then that falls on the leadership.

Coaching loses and wins as many games as the talent itself does.

It’s crazy how many people exist in this world that let the result of a game played between 18-22 year olds impact their lives to such a degree. If a fat, middle aged schmuck on the couch is getting that torn up over a football game, it’s time to find a new hobby. It ain’t that serious.

It's way more than that middle aged guy in the Ohio State fanbase. Hell, I was over it when they took the 2 touchdown lead. Oregon was simply better prepared and the more physical team yesterday. I don't care that their defensive line was "quick". They were good and they played like their hair was on fire.

Day insists that the D coordinator run the single high safety system, right?

He brought in Hafley, who knew how to run it, and things were pretty good circa 2019.

Hafley left and Coombs doesn’t have experience running any system, much less single high safety.

That has to be the fundamental underlying issue in the current failure.

I think Day needs to bring in someone who knows how to run a system, period, and if he can’t find someone who knows single high safety and can recruit, completely re-evaluate his expectation that the defense runs that system.

Expecting perfection from a 19 year old with exactly zero experience throwing the ball is stupid. Stop already. Let the kid develop.
In the current 4-team playoff world of CFB, an Ohio State QB doesn't get the luxury of developing on the fly, he has to be ready to play at a high level from day one. Even if he's 19 years old with zero experience throwing the ball. That's just reality.

That's especially true in 2021, because Ohio State has at least two other QBs on the roster (McCord, Ewers) with equal or better potential than Stroud. If Ryan Day lets Stroud develop throughout the entire 2021 season, then he risks losing McCord and/or Ewers to the transfer portal prior the 2022 season. Day is going to have some tough decisions to make this season.

Stroud was a stud yesterday. He’s about last on my pecking order of disappointment.

The lack of run game was surprising and disappointing. The fact Stroud was effective throwing the ball while we were consistently in 2nd and long is pretty impressive. Then the huge drops throughout the game….and beyond the drops how many times did we have a receiver slip coming out of a break?

After the poor defense I may put our own fucking field as the #2 culprit. What the hell was that?
