Game Thread Oregon at tOSU, Sat. Nov. 7th, 3:30 pm ET, CBS

I think it's more of HOW they lost the Texas game. If it was a back-and-forth close affair for the whole game and we ended up losing it wouldn't had been so bad. A historic type of 4th quarter meltdown of course is going to cause an uproar.
Sure, but the other side of the coin is......they pulled about 10 horse shoes out of their asses just by not having Arch Manning be Arch Manning for a quarter. Put both teams in that same situation again, let Ohio State play EXACTLY the same way, and we win 9 out of 10 of them. Maybe 8. Arch not finding a way to fuck it up with all those 4th downs and whatnot was just flukey.

IMO the real thing is still expectatiosn.

Put ourselves in a world where you play a 12 game all P4 game schedule. Also understand you are not going undefeated, no one does and 3-4 losses is still good/above average/will get you into playoff with a bunch of other flawed teams that have lost 2-3-4 games.

Now, does the way you lost 1 game of those 3-4 losses really deserve to get existential crisis treatemnet?

I'm telling myself to start thinking this way so I don't go off the deep end for no reason. Its my best guess at the new normal.

I think my overall point is that even in the current NIL/playoff era where there is more mobility and parity of talent (and the argument could be made that this benefits or should benefit us more) we are underachieving with the tOSU players and resources we have. You can't tell me that there aren't other coaches that could've done as well as Day with what he's had to work with and that some of them wouldn't have made the bonehead decisions, both in-game and with staff that he has. I see a lot that's special about Day as a person, but he's just as likely, if not more so, to lose as to win the games that count.

Jax, I take your point about not losing our minds over regular season losses in the playoff era, but my problem is that we still have to be capable of making a playoff run and winning however many games back to back unless the point is just to say that, great, we made the playoffs. Being in the playoff is necessary, but not sufficient. I think 2024 was an outlier. Even though we saw it, I don't think we see it again and the argument can be made that 2024's run was in part despite rather than because of Day.

The loss at LA was devastating, but most of the problems were fixable. Of course, it's an entirely different question whether they will fix them.

It felt to me that the BYE won. The idea that everyone HAS to do MORE to help the freshman QB became a burden to all players. Players forgot the fundamentals and just tried to do too much. Caleb Downs said it best: "Just do your job and win one-on-one". Day wanted the team to make routine plays routinely.

These things are easier said than done, particularly when you are facing other top athletes and the game is going fast. Let's hope the team settles down mentally and gets back on track.

Managing team psyche is such a delicate job. Oregon could be as dangerous as, if not more than USC. The good news is this game is at the shoe, and the team should be able to bounce back. Hopefully Jay Timmons will be back too.

If the team can right the ship, they will probably win out, most importantly, beat those cheaters up north. A settled Fahey and scarred Buckeye team could be scary.

What can I say, I'm a cup-half-full kinda guy. The ship can't see the bottom yet.

BTW, I hated the narrative that the team beat themselves in Austin. It gave them a false sense of security and made them feel better than they should have. I hope people don't blame this loss on the new QB. It was a team loss.

agree.....butover a longer period.

This year it just isn't there and we will be lucky to make a playoff appearance, which to be honest in pro sports is kind of good enough IF you occasionally make a deeper run. This is still an in between the old and new year and it sucks that we realistically have no shot at a NC which is always the benchmark at OSU so I get it.

Jury is out on Day imo. Can he hire a staff or be that guy that is the difference maker at coach like the NFL or is he more in the Cooper (and a lot of other coaches to be honest) that really just overwhelmed people with better talent? I lean to the latter to be honest but like I said, I am willing to see him in the new normal (not that they gave me a vote).

Fahey was ok it sounds like certain Bear coaches and fans that preferred Bagent over Williams. Fahey should start till we’re done but TSC should get a chance.

Fahey played about as well as you could expect a true freshman in his first start when he's had zero meaningful prior reps to play. The team around him let him down on more than a few occasions as well. If they (Day) really thinks that Fahey has a real future you keep playing him regardless. You don't just do a QB flip because you are "eliminated"

I think that Oregon was VERY close to a total implosion, but of course they decided to turn it back on in the 2nd half of the game right before they play us. I wouldn't expect anything else. We always tend to get everyone's best regardless of how crappy they may have been previously.

I thought Fahey played great* for 3 quarters. I didn't like much of the 4th quarter......though he was let down by some drops. Those Bauserbombs out of the back of the endzone can't happen, though.

*great as in, better than expected, given the situation.

Oh yea, he made some very freshman mistakes (The Bauserbombs) but you're going to just have to take those right now unfortunately with the situation and hope he learns and grows from them. Which he seems like the type who will.

The game is in Columbus this year.
I was waiting for him to show up in Eugene this weekend, way to ruin it dude.
Oregon poses some of the same challenges as SC. But the game is really about us. Fix what needs to be fixed. Hopefully Timmons will be good to go.
Oregon is pretty much damn near the same thing this week, but I'd say more talented on defense. We're at home at least. Still, unless we make a monumental turnaround on defense and make some key changes, I see a two game losing streak on the way. If we play like we did last game, it's a guaranteed loss. If we bounce back and respond like some past teams have done, then we have a chance.

Of course I hope we win this one, but really I'm at the point where all that really matters is finding a way to beat the skunk weasels. Even if we make the playoffs somehow, this team has too many holes to make a title run. Adjusting expectations, you hope we can win against Oregon regardless because we don't want to be slipping against them with the recruiting implications. But I'm not even thinking about the playoffs, I just want to improve all the way until that last game in November. I'd rather lose every game up until then but beat ttun.

But I digress, I think best case scenario is a close win here. Like USC, they have a ton of talent despite wildly inconsistent play. So I really have zero expectations or guesses on what happens here.
