Opinions on the Antonio Davis incident?

Opinions? Sure.

Security - not enough of it at the games. Depending on who you ask either Axelrod, a nearby spectator, or Davis' wife all tried to engage Security to mediate the precipitating incident. According to Axelrod the security guard took one look at the "situation" and did nothing. Others differ in how they relate the sequence of events.

Suing Davis - Pussy, wuss, girly man. 1 Million for what? Greed, 15-minutes of fame, get this loser out of our lives already please.

"She tried to scratch me" -- See above and add a big you have to be kidding, you get in the face of a woman, you are a man, you expect the lady to play fair? Get real.

The Truth Will Out - Lots of cameras, plenty of unseen video, a slew of spectators around the incident. The only one currently siding with Axelrod's version of this is - you guessed it girly-man. Maybe his version is the truth, though we need not speculate, we shall know. (And my money is on Axelrod ending up looking like a worthless whining chump).

The NBA and its Suspension of Davis - No choice really but to suspend him. They had the rule in place, what are they to do, say it doesn't apply when one it's players goes Don Quixote into the crowd?

Davis and His Actions - No choice really, what is he meant to do, sit idly by while an incident involving his wife and family flares out of control. No-one among us would likely have done any differently.

If Stern wants his players to remain on the court and out of the stands however, he has to find a means to protect the interests of the players families when in attendance - which brings us full circle to -- SECURITY.

I understand both sides... I can't blame him for going into the stands if he thought his wife was being threatened.... Like Stoo said in an earlier post about her behavior.... one of our sports guys used to cover the Magic in Orlando and knows several NBA players and things like that.... he said that the wife is a HUGE bitch that runs her mouth so much that other wives won't sit next to her at games....

Everybody jumped to conclusions assuming the man was the one who started crap with the woman. If I look up into the stands and see my wife arguing with some guy during a basketball game, guess what I'm going to do. Roll my eyes. It's highly doubtful anything is going to happen at a basketball game with that many people there that close to the floor. This isn't the 3rd level at Lincoln Field.

She's a bitch who started shit with a random fan, and all he did was call security over because he's not a dipshit. He did nothing wrong.

Agreed. I don't think Antonio Davis is a bad guy; he went into the stands in the heat of the moment and he didn't try to pick a fight. He simply wanted to make sure his wife was OK. I suppose that's admirable in a moronic sort of way. But everyone needs to take their righteous indignation about him being suspended down a peg or two. This is the PRESIDENT OF THE PLAYERS ASSOCIATION. He of all people should understand the NBA's position on this, particularly after the Artest debacle. You simply can't go into the stands. What could possibly happen to his wife, in full view of everyone in the first section of seats?

I guess it's pretty hypocritical of us to demand these professional athletes be hyper-aggressive on the field and still make cool, rational decisions off of it. What Antonio Davis did wasn't ill-intentioned, evil, or even particularly hard to understand; but it was a mistake, and one that should be punished. I think a 5 game suspension is fair. It's not like the Knicks are going anywhere, anyway.

As for the lawsuit, it sounds pretty bogus. Just another schmuck trying to capitalize off his 15 seconds. Maybe the league should take the salary Davis will lose for those 5 games and give it to this moron as a settlement. He doesn't deserve it, but it would get his face off the news.

Why is he a moron? He is being labeled by everybody as a guy who gets drunk at games and berates a woman to the point where her husband had to come off the court to "save her". That simply didn't happen. If somebody's bitch wife did that to me, I would want to have the record set straight also.

The guy doesn't even drink at games!

Agreed...it's always the woman's fault.

No seriously...

I tend to agree with you on this one, 27. By many accounts, she's a loudmouth hoochie mama. If I pay to get in a game and I want to, I'm going to talk trash about her baby-daddy's game and team and there's not jack fuck she can do about it. I agree that the guy's a puss for suing them, but Davis should tell his wife to holster her lip and knock it off. She's there to watch and support, not to cause trouble and cost them money.

If my wife came to a trial and started or participated in some shit with somebody in the courtroom, guess who's fault it would be - mine, for letting her be there in the first place knowing what she was like. This chick was never in any danger and fucking Davis didn't need to go all Mandingo except to prove to his teammates dat he be protectin' da house. Fuck the sanctimonious gutter trash NBA.

Davis is perfectly justified in going into the stands, but the league should (and did) hand down a penalty for doing so.

Gotta go with 27 on this one. Mrs. Davis is one of those loud, obnoxious spectators that go to away games and flaunt their allegiance to their team. She thinks that, beause she's a woman, she's entitled to put her finger in any man's face.

I say ban her from a few games as well.

I agree completely--and I also wonder what Davis is doing looking up into the stands during the game? Just play the game and let security take care of your woman...

I love how the ESPN commentators are defending Davis as some sort of crusader for family values, helping to blow this non-issue out of proportion.

I think it may have been during a time out or between quarters... the video I saw had him standing around or walking towards the bench when he took off towards to stands.

misogyny shouldn't be tolerated

Sounds like you've got a healthy respect for women.

Here are 2 reasons this guy is, to put it bluntly, a bit daft:

1) A lawsuit is only going to keep this issue in the news longer. And no one will care about the outcome; even if he wins, he'll still be seen in a negative light by many. Why? Because any fight between a man and a woman, verbal or physical, will always be seen the same way, no matter who started it.

2) For that very reason, this guy shouldn't have made a big deal out of the situation. In the video clips I've seen, he's frantically calling for security while Mrs. Davis is calmly encouraging him to settle down. She may have started it, I don't know, but surely he could have handled it more discreetly.

Now here's why he's smart: even though his lawsuit is shaky at best, he knows that Davis and the NBA would rather settle than drag it out. So he'll get a nice pay day for practically bursting into tears because some woman was picking on him at a basketball game.

Easy now. Who said Davis' wife was in the wrong here? I don't think we really know. All I know is that it wasn't a physical altercation as was first reported and as was perceived by Davis.

And suing for $1 million? You've got to be kidding me. That's no way to prove that you weren't being as ass.

Good point. I don't think i'd really be proud of the fact that I had to sue some crazy woman because I couldn't handle her giving me a hard time at a basketball game. If somebody is being that much trouble, and you can't handle it on your own...then maybe you've got your own issues. I'm not saying that gives any woman a right to bother some guy at a basketball game...but be a freakin man and deal with it.

Actually, I think he's suing for defamation because of how it was reported by Davis that he was intoxicated and acting like an idiot. I don't really think the video clips support Davis' assertion. And many of the sportswriters who didn't have the opportunity to question the assertion through the video evidence painted him as just that - another drunk idiot fan.

But, regardless, a suit here does not support his position that he was rational and in the right.

I didn't know about Davis' comments. I guess technically speaking the guy may have a legitimate law suit, if Davis did indeed portray him that way.

I still think he handled the whole situation poorly. As do you, I take it.
