Ridiculous. Now, subjectively, we're going to determine when and where a player can go into the stands. That's absurd. In my opinion, Davis did get a slap on the wrist for this because the mitigating circumstances. But, if he had gotten one or even no games, what message is the NBA sending? "You can go into the stands, then argue why later." Davis was wrong about the situation. He was wrong for going into the crowd. He obviously didn't consider the purpose of the rule at all prior to this occasion. And as President of the Player's Union, he should have known better.
People want to blame the fan, the wife, or even security for what happened. Wrong. The fan and the wife were in an argument. Anyone who has been to a sporting event has seen this before. Security WAS THERE TO MEDIATE. Davis, on a basketball court 50 feet thought he saw something that wasn't happening and went up into the stands. I guess no one is too blame for the creation of a situation that could have turned ugly.
Bud or Miller light is a perfectly good beer?
I don't know how you can say that the dispute was dissolved or security wasn't needed. I'm not about to let somebody get me into trouble when all she has to do is be a woman and lie about it. A woman will get the benefit of the doubt against a man in that case 11 times out of 10. Calling the security guard over (whether it was his intention or not) made everybody who bothers looking at the facts 100% certain that he wasn't the instigator and he wanted no part of her.
So you're argument is that, because he thought Mrs. Davis would lie about the altercation to security, he should call security over himself? If she wanted to lie about him to the stadium cops, wouldn't she have wanted them to come over? It's obvious if you watch the video that she did not. Whatever she did to him, she didn't want the situation to escalate any further. So, yeah, it was over. Unless you're a whiny former 3rd grade glue monitor who wants to see her miss recess because she called you names, yes, the situation is over.

Sure, there are people to blame. Davis knew the rule and chose to break it, and was rightly punished. I think a fine would have been more appropriate than a suspension, but hey--that's just me. His wife was probably being overly boisterous. The fan had to have said something. They're all to blame. Anyway, as far as subjective examination of the situation...I don't see why we can't. My least favorite word in the entire English language is 'policy'. He touched no one, he did nothing. You have to be subjective. What happens when a player leaps into the stands going after a loose ball? Nothing, right? We're not computers. There was no algorithm for how many games Davis was going to miss. Stern thought about it and made a decision. Just like Davis thought about the risk/reward of addressing a problem that he found - at the time - worthy of his personal attention. Funny thing is, the main purpose of my post was not to defend Davis, but rather to make it clear how pointless and trivial the entire situation is. There's no reason for anyone to be upset. None.
Here's my policy: It's not a lie unless you can prove it, and it's not a crime unless I get caught.
But that's beside the point. The policy is flat and without exception, which - as it does with all such policies - means it is inherently flawed. I guarantee we could sit here and figure out a set of circumstances under which a player would be more than justified in entering the stands. Have we seen such a set to this point? I wouldn't say so. And I agree that Davis' suspension, while a bit more harsh than I had predicted, was not entirely unreasonable. My point throughout has been that this was not at all a major issue. No personal harm whatsoever came to anyone, except perhaps the fan. That fan - Opie, or whatever - has filed his laughable little lawsuit, it'll get thrown out, and he'll end up looking like more of a jackass than he already did. Hopefully the next uproar will come over someone doing the hokey fucking pokey over the 'magic line' where the floor ends and the fans' sanctuary begins. What'll it be...ten grand for every foot put 'in'?
Here's the real question: Would he have been suspended for five games if the Detriot debacle had never taken place?
No, that's not my argument at all. First, note this little quote "whether it was his intention or not". I doubt his intent was to call the cops over so they could make sure he wasn't harassing her.EdDantes22 said:So you're argument is that, because he thought Mrs. Davis would lie about the altercation to security, he should call security over himself? So then in this arguement if he wanted to give her one punch in the face because she was yelling at him then it would be okay because he didn't want it to escalate beyond that one punch.
Your arguement has the be one of the dumbest arguements ever. Like Tibor said if I paid for those seats and some crazy bitch starts yelling at me and shaking her finger at me, damn staight I am calling security.
Hell did he even know it was Davis's wife when the thing started?
