One wish for the offense

If you could fix one thing offensively, what would it be?

It's the same problem as last year, and it isn't the playcalling or the offensive philosophy. The players just aren't executing the base offense. .......I look up and down the roster and watch the players on the field and I just don't see it. This team is still hungover from the exodus of players from the 2002 and 2003 teams.

If a whole new set of players is having execution problems it still gets back to coaching on the offensive side of the football.

Doesn't matter if you are in the offensive play calling/philosophy or execution camp. Now that its happening multiple years in a row and to a completely new set of players we have to put our love of JT aside ever so slightly and be objective. Its ultimately a coaching issue.

Really, this is the forth year in a row that we've been saying this...I think it's pretty obvious that the majority of the problem is not the fault of the players, whatever detail you can nit-pick about decisions and timing...make the stuff simple.

"Hey, Troy, stay in the pocket and throw the ball downfield to Santonio."

"Mr. QB, roll out and launch a bomb to Speedy Gonzalez. Just give it a shot, maybe we'll get a pass interference if it isn't complete."

"Throw a pitch to the tailback out wide. Fans like watching that stuff."

Etc...

You mean the players from the 2002 and 2003 seasons that also had no offense?

I have to totally disagree with that. Tress could have USC's players, and still would have no offense.

I have to agree. Our defense is second to none. Witht the talent we have on offense, there is no reason we shouldn't be a juggernaut on both sides of the ball. I can't think of one season under the Tressel regime where our offense has been explosive or even unpredictable. I know Tressel's philosophy is to punt and play defense, but it may be time to rethink that with the way other teams are evolving offensively.

Tressel and company have recruited some great offensive weapons but seems to have trouble putting them in a great scheme. I can't help but wonder when this is going to affect the offensive recruiting...

Never thought I'd say this, but I am now for Tressel releasing some control and hiring a creative OC.

JT always says, "It's an evolution."

Does he really have to point out that evolution takes millions of years? :p

I love Tressel and what he has accomplished, BUT Tressel came from a situation where you had to choose where to put your talent; on the offensive or defensive side of the ball. He chose defense and it paid off then (and is still paying off), but he's now in a situation where he has talent on both sides of the ball and the O simply has not been effective except when a certain unmentionable running back wore scarlet and gray.

He hasn't produced a quaterback worthy of All Big 10... and that's his speciality coaching position... he hasn't produced an offensive line that can pass block and run block... his offenses stink... no other way to phrase it.

His defenses and special teams are phenominal and go back to prove what I said in my first paragraph.

He's proven to be a fantastic recruiter. (But I wonder how long we will continue to get talented backs and receivers if this offense remains so inept)

He put new energy into the program and has brought a new level of expectations from the faithful (which is why so many of us, me included, are taking his offense to task)

He won an NC against a formidable team and against formidable odds and he did it with D and special teams. I just don't believe that that kind of lightening will strike twice.

You have to have an offense to go with a great D to be in contention for an NC year in and year out and in five years JT has failed to produce anything near both.
