The third-year right tackle is the favorite to win the open slot at that position, and he’s come a long way to earn it — if he can lock it down. Petit-Frere has bulked up to 310 pounds — up significantly from where he was in the past — and he seems to finally be up to a weight the Buckeyes expect from their tackles. He’s still locked in a position battle with Paris Johnson, another five-star recruit, but Petit-Frere’s time is now.

“Both are very, very talented,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said. “Until you put pads on, it’s hard to tell with an offensive lineman. But I’ve been very, very impressed with both of them for different reasons. Nick had a tremendous offseason. His body weight is as strong as it’s ever been. I think he had a great offseason — he’s strong, really looks like a different person. I’ve been impressed with Paris in the short time he’s been here, his attention to detail and the work he’s put in to get where he’s at right now. We’ll get a better idea once the pads get on, but both look really good.”

With more weight on and more experience added, Petit-Frere can finally become a starter for the Buckeyes.

Patience is a necessity on the offensive line, even with former top-ranked recruits at the position. The potential of Nicholas Petit-Frere has never been in doubt thanks to his big frame and athleticism, but bulking up physically was always going to be a necessity for him to become a frontline starter.

After a couple years in the weight room and hundreds of thousands of calories devoured, Petit-Frere is up to 310 pounds and carrying himself like a potential All-Big Ten tackle.

“Nick had a tremendous offseason,” Day said. “His body weight is as strong as it’s ever been. I think he had a great offseason — he’s strong, really looks like a different person.”

NICHOLAS PETIT-FRERE - RIGHT TACKLE
Petit-Frere enters his third year with the program as a redshirt sophomore though it might seem like he's been in Columbus even longer.

The 6-foot-5, 310-pound tackle arrived with much fanfare but has one just start - last season at left tackle in place of an ailing Thayer Munford - over two seasons. Petit-Frere logged 240 snaps in 2019 with 55% of those coming against the likes of Northwestern, Maryland and Rutgers. He saw just 10 snaps over the last four games as he backed up Branden Bowen.

Now, Petit-Frere needs to earn the trust of Greg Studrawa to help solidify what can be one of the nation's best offensive lines if he does his part. If he doesn't, Dawand Jones and true freshman Paris Johnson Jr. will be eager to step in but the hope is Petit-Frere is now ready for prime time.

Nothing’s official quite yet.

Next week, with just days separating him from Ohio State’s Oct. 24 season opener against Nebraska, head coach Ryan Day plans to sit down with offensive line coach Greg Studrawa to set the five-man starting lineup. Together, they’ll determine who else could get meaningful reps up front in the season’s first game.

But as of now, redshirt sophomore Nicholas Petit-Frere has the edge on freshman Paris Johnson and sophomore Dawand Jones to start at right tackle.

“I would say that Nick, right now, is taking most of the reps with the ones,” Day said on Tuesday afternoon. “He looks really strong. Has had a really good camp.”

Day said he anticipates both Petit-Frere and Johnson playing meaningful snaps at right tackle this season, saying “they’re both doing great.”

But based on his Tuesday comments, it would be a surprise to see anybody other than Petit-Frere open the season at right tackle. Day went out of his way to sound as optimistic as ever before about what Petit-Frere will be able to accomplish this season.

“I would say that I'm very impressed with the way Nick had an unbelievable offseason,” Day said. “He's had a really good preseason and I think he's going to have a heck of a year.”

Ohio State has officially named Nicholas Petit-Frere and Harry Miller starters on the offensive line, with Petit-Frere stepping into the right tackle spot and Miller at left guard.

Petit-Frere, the top-rated tackle in the 2018 recruiting class, earned the starting spot after an offseason battle with sophomore Dawand Jones and freshman Paris Johnson Jr., the top-rated tackle in the 2020 recruiting class.

“He's done a great job during this pandemic," offensive line coach Greg Studrawa said on Tuesday. "He has really changed his body. He's bigger, he's stronger, he's 315 pounds."

Last season, Petit-Frere played 240 snaps, the most of any non-starter on the offensive line.

"He's as strong as he ever was, and his offseason, his development, really pushed him to the top of that position," Studrawa said.

KEPT HIM CLEAN. The Buckeyes played probably the best pass-rushing duo they'll see all season with Shaka Toney and Jason Oweh in the Penn State trenches, but they were a total non-factor on Saturday night because Thayer Munford and Nicholas Petit-Fere were damn-near perfect.



There was, of course, that one time Justin Fields got hit like from behind a damn tackling dummy by some fellow running full speed, unimpeded straight into him, but the sad thing is that was actually Fields' fault for not identifying the rush either presnap or postsnap.

FIVE WHO FLASHED: JUSTIN FIELDS, NICHOLAS PETIT-FRERE, GARRETT WILSON HELPED OHIO STATE BEAT RUTGERS

NICHOLAS PETIT-FRERE
First-time starting offensive linemen don’t always have the easiest transition in the world. Harry Miller, despite his five-star status and the glowing words teammates and coaches have directed his way since arriving, has struggled early this year. He endured a rough season opener, then seemingly held his blocks better against Penn State, but was called for a trio of first-half holding penalties on Saturday evening and had some communication breakdowns with center Josh Myers in pass protection.

Nicholas Petit-Frere’s first three games as a full-time starter, conversely, have been downright smooth.

The starting right tackle had a quiet yet effective performance versus Nebraska, didn’t allow a single pressure when facing the Nittany Lions’ vaunted defensive ends, then put together another masterful game on Saturday against Rutgers. Again, he held strong kick-stepping into pass protection while adding some power to his run blocking.



So far, a strong argument could be made that Petit-Frere has been both the Buckeyes’ most dominant and most consistent offensive lineman. Considering he’s playing alongside a first-team All-American (Wyatt Davis), third-year starter (Thayer Munford), second-team All-Big Ten honoree (Myers) and former five-star recruit (Miller), it’s a heck of a statement.
