Barton family covered
Kirk Barton isn't sweating whether the Big Ten Network can reach an agreement with the big cable companies in time for the first two Ohio State games to be aired.
"My mom and girlfriend are accounted for (with comp tickets)," he said. "My dog's at the vet right now ? he's sick ? and he won't be able to watch it. My sister's a (recruiting) host, so she's accounted for. And everyone else is going to have to go to BW3's until they get this thing worked out."
Barton, who attended the season-opening press luncheon in a suit borrowed from ex-teammate T.J. Downing, just bought a Yorkshire Terrier for $500.
Asked what's wrong with it, Barton said, "He ate potpourri."

You know what I learned from this? Our Right Tackle has a Yorky and potpourri in his house.

Do you really want to know why your grandfather told you not to live with a woman before marriage? There's your answer right there.

On being named captain
?I didn?t really expect to be named captain. I just tried to go out and earn it and it was certainly an honor when they called my name. The biggest pressure of being a captain is knowing that not only do you represent your team, but also your university. It?s a job I take very seriously.?

On the approach of the first game
?It?s exciting because camp has been so miserable. The practices don?t get any easier, but the first game serves as the light at the end of the tunnel because you get to see another defense besides your own.?

On whether their pass blocking or run blocking is better
?We pride ourselves on doing both well. This season we?re going to stress pass blocking because of the new guys lining up at quarterback. We have to try and protect them just as well as we protected Troy (Smith).?

On what separates games from practices
?The biggest difference is that it?s on TV and in front of 100,000 people. This is the first time a lot of the young guys will play in front of an audience like this and it will be interesting to see who steps when it matters most.?

Tepid win irks Barton
Sunday, September 9, 2007
BY Mike Popovich
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS Kirk Barton thinks it is about time for Ohio State's offensive players to look themselves in the mirror. The fifth-year senior tackle from Perry High School is not too happy with the direction they are heading.

"We're not on the slope that we need to be on," Barton said. "We need to be getting better every day, and it seems like we're either flat-lining or getting worse."

This is the killer instinct Buckeyes need down the stretch

"When your foot is on that jugular, you have to kill that fool," offensive tackle Kirk Barton said. "You don't just back off, let him stand up and punch you a couple of times and then knock him back down."

Very rarely does an O-lineman get such a high grade.

The Jim Parker Offensive Lineman was Kirk Barton. Kirk graded 95 percent. May have played as good as I've seen him play in all phases, which is exactly what you want from your leaders, exactly what you want from your seniors, to be playing the best they possibly can as you progress through the season. And he won the Jim Parker Offensive Lineman.

Kirk may go down as one of my favorite Buckeyes ever. He's good for at least a couple of entertaining quotes every game.
Amen to that. His quotes are among the most colorful comparisons or analogies or similes or just plain randomness that is extremely endearing to the reader. He's got to become a writer when he retires.

Kirk Barton has been a great interview since day one, literally. His first Q&A on the radio after signing his LOI was about the best I've ever heard from a newly signed recruit, and even his first quotes about Bollman telling him that he'd be a "living bitch" (or something to that effect) after a few years in the program, showed his intensity early on.

Bollman was right, I guess. :) Kirk was also another one of those sleeper recruits who's developed into a star and leader, like Animal Jr. and MJenks. Great kid and outstanding captain.

With all the talks of quotes, how'd this one not get brought up?

"Real quick before I go on, I just want to say we dedicated this to our band, well, that's something I came up with because they couldn't come back after they had like piss bombs and blood balls thrown at them last year, so this is for our band. It's not all Penn State fans, it only takes a couple, but it spoils the whole experience of college football for our band. Just let them know we're thinking about them (the band)."
