As much as I hate reading about this tragedy, Barton pleading “not guilty” is as much his attorney’s suggestion as it is his choice. Regardless of the repulsion of someone’s act, it’s still the government’s job to press the charges and make sure they have the evidence to prove the charges.
In my law ignorant perspective, this just makes the negotiations for a plea deal all the more likely. There’s no negotiation if you plead “guilty” from the jump.
The government lawyers are also massively overwhelmed and if someone can afford to pay a lawyer long enough to waste enough time they will likely move to a plea deal regardless of whether the person is undeniably guilty as hell or not because they can’t waste all their time on one case.

Still it fucking sucks he just didn’t immediately say I deserve what’s coming.

I get why he’s saying not guilty. Just sucks our system works like that.

All I know is if I accidentally killed someone id have a rough time not being overwhelming remorseful
Literally no one is going to voluntarily speed up the process of being sent to federal pound me in the ass prison.

When you sober up from whatever horrific shit you did, you still are going to try and avoid death by sodomy.

He needs not be out on bail or under in-patient treatment until his court date. He can afford it. Dry his ass out and maybe he'll realize his actions killed someone. Plead guilty and throw yourself at the mercy of the court. But he does seem to be entitled, and he's doing none of that.

I don't disagree about the first part.

The second part is straight legal strategy. He didn't come up with it.
