Barton to stay at Ohio State
UPDATE: 4:50 PM, Wednesday, December 27, 2006
By Todd Porter Repository sports writer

PERRY TWP. Ever since Kirk Barton was a young boy, he followed the NFL Draft. He printed mock drafts, he watched guys he's played with and against come out too soon, too late or at the right time. He's seen guys make mistakes and guys make money.
Barton isn't done making memories at Ohio State. The Buckeye junior was one of four Ohio State players who submitted paperwork to gauge early-entry draft status and he didn't even need to see the papers to know his decision.

Kirk Barton- a high school 2* OL/TE to testing the waters to leave for the NFL draft. THAT'S a success story right there.

And the funny thing is that Tressel pulls AT LEAST one 1*-3* a year and turns them into high 4* and 5* caliber players, much like Barton. Gamble, Holmes, Hawk, Malcolm Jenkins, Robiskie, Downing all fit that bill. Heck, Mangold was rated a 1* or a 2* by one of the recruiting services and he could end up being an NFL Hall of Famer when hes' done, and Antonio Smith turned from a walk-on into a Thorpe trophy finalist!! Laurinitis, Russell, and Gant will be continuing this trend. God bless Tressel and his staff's ability to recognize talent.

Glad to hear you're staying put Kirk! Help us win those crystal trophies back-to-back!!

Player development has just as much to do with the success of the program as talent recognition. The most striking aspect about our young players is that they are all very fundamentally sound. Once they understand the fundamentals of the game, coaches are very good at finding niches for those players in order to maximize their strengths and hide their weaknesses. That is excellent coaching and hats off to our headcoach and position coaches.

OSU tackle drops NFL bid

Offensive starter Kirk Barton of Perry says he'll return for senior year in 2007

Awesome news! Of the 4 Juniors that were 'testing the waters', Kirk is the one I hoped would stay the most. Nothing at all against the other 3 and the incredible talent that we'd be losing if they do go as most expect, but I think the talent & experience we have coming back at WR & RB helps off-set early losses in those areas with a smoother transition than if we'd have lost Barton.

Great day! :osu:

P.S.

I think we can pencil him in as one of '07s captains.

Barton to stay with Buckeyes

ASSOCIATED PRESS

COLUMBUS - Ohio State offensive tackle Kirk Barton will return to the Buckeyes for his senior season in 2007, passing up a chance to enter the NFL.

"The best thing for me and my family is for me to stay at Ohio State and continue my college football career as I work toward my degree," Barton said in a statement.

Barton was one of four offensive starters who requested a draft evaluation from an NFL committee. Tailback Antonio Pittman and wide receivers Ted Ginn Jr. and Anthony Gonzalez, all fellow juniors, had filed the nonbinding, preliminary forms, usually seen as a first step toward coming out early for the draft.

Barton, a 6-foot-6, 310-pounder, was an All-Big Ten selection this season for the top-ranked Buckeyes (12-0). He started all 12 games this year and has played in 33 games the last three seasons, starting in 28.

OSU tackle to return for senior season

Thursday, December 28, 2006 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter

Columbus- For one more season, Kirk Barton's NFL experience will be limited to sitting with his uncle and his cousins in the Dawg Pound.
Ohio State's junior right tackle said Wednesday that he will re turn for his sen ior season after an official appraisal from the NFL projected him as a third - or fourth-round draft pick. Three other OSU juniors - Ted Ginn Jr., Anthony Gonzalez and Antonio Pittman - also applied to be evaluated by the NFL, but though the school put out an official release on Barton's decision, there was no word on the other three.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

GLENDALE, Ariz. — What happens in the locker room stays in the locker room. Ohio State junior tackle Kirk Barton knows that now. But what happens on the patio just outside his swanky hotel room in Scottsdale; well, that’s good for public consumption. So the story was related of how he laid out a couple of In-n-Out cheeseburgers on a recent night to attract some of the javelinas (small wild pigs) that roam the area.
