OL Justin Boren (Official Thread)

Ravens sign five exclusive-rights FAs

April 16, 2012

The Ravens announced the signing of five exclusive-rights free agents on Twitter Monday.

The five players are linebacker Sergio Kindle, long snapper Morgan Cox, offensive lineman Justin Boren, linebacker Josh Bynes and defensive back Danny Gorrer.

Exclusive-rights free agents are players who were not under contract for 2012 and have less than three years of experience. They have no leverage in bargaining; their choice is to take what the Ravens offer or decline and try to catch on with another team.
Boren spent all of the 2011 regular season on the Ravens? practice squad after surviving training camp as an undrafted free agent. He was signed to the active roster in January but was inactive for both playoff games.

Ravens coaches rotated everybody around pretty regularly, so to say, ?This guy practiced with the first team or this guy was with the second team? would be sort of misleading. The offensive linemen, especially, were moved around. Rookie second-round pick Kelechi Osemele was getting most of his snaps at left guard, where there figures to be a nice competition in training camp for the starting job vacated by Ben Grubbs. But that?s not necessarily where he was for Tuesday?s practice. Jah Reid told reporters that he got extensive reps at left guard that day. Justin Boren and Gino Gradkowski also got looks with the projected first-team guys. Barring the signing of a veteran, I still say that it will be a two-man competition at left guard between Osemele and Reid, but it?s a little too premature to suggest one has the edge based on how they were used the first week of OTAs.

Boren pushing into the picture?
June 2, 2012

Is Justin Boren pushing his way into the mix in the offensive line?

It sure sounds that way.

Boren, 24, was signed as a rookie free agent last July but spent the entire regular season on the practice squad. He was signed to the active roster before the playoffs in a move that hardly made a ripple, and then was a game-day inactive in both playoff games.

But in listening to coaches and players this spring, Boren, 6-foot-2 and 325 pounds, has emerged as an option to fill in at both guard and at center.

?Justin Boren has had an outstanding camp,? offensive coordinator Cam Cameron said on Wednesday after the Ravens wrapped up their second OTA session. Cameron mentioned Boren along with second-round draft pick Kelechi Osemele and Jah Reid as options at left guard.

The competition there figures to be one of the most spirited in training camp as the Ravens try to replace guard Ben Grubbs, who moved to New Orleans via free agency.

?Competition is going to bring out the best in every guy. We?ll find the right guy for that spot, and it?s nice to have some options,? Cameron said.

Starting right guard Marshal Yanda, when asked about the picture at left guard, also mentioned Boren.

Boren is listed as both a guard and a center, which would give the offensive line more flexibility, although the majority of his college experience was at guard. And what an experience that was: The Pickerington, Ohio, native began his collegiate career at Michigan, where his father had played. Then he transferred to archrival Ohio State, thus becoming just the third player to play for both teams in the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry.

5 things learned from OTAs: No. 2 -- LG still wide open

OTAs were supposed to pit Jah Reid (back) and Kelechi Osemele (undisclosed) against each other for the starting LG spot. By the second week, both players were injured. G/C Justin Boren saw most of the first team reps at LG. It's unclear if Reid and Osemele will resume their competition at minicamp.

Lions practice squad: Detroit adds Justin Boren, releases Jimmy Saddler-McQueen

Mitch Stringer-US PRESSWIRE

The Detroit Lions have made a change to their practice squad by signing former Michigan and Ohio State offensive lineman Justin Boren.

It's fitting that just days before Michigan plays Ohio State in football, the Detroit Lions have signed someone who played at both schools. The Lions announced on Tuesday that offensive guard Justin Boren, who started his career at Michigan and finished it at Ohio State, has been signed to the practice squad. Defensive tackle Jimmy Saddler-McQueen was released to make room for Boren.

I'm just going to be honest and say right now that I'm no fan of Boren. Not only did he transfer to Ohio State from Michigan, but the way he went about the move was pretty disgraceful. Typically once players get to the NFL I toss aside their college allegiances, but it's tough for me to look past what Boren did.

In any case, Boren was an undrafted free agent in 2011. He spent time on the Baltimore Ravens' practice squad that year and was with the team during the 2012 offseason. Before joining the Lions' practice squad, he had been a free agent since the start of the season.
