Undrafted rookie watch
A look at the undrafted rookies linked to the Ravens (*-means confirmed commitment):
*Justin Boren, G, Ohio State
Pro: Scrappy competitor who mauls defensive linemen. Has good upside. Con: Blocking technique has been described as ?ultra stiff.?
Thought the same thing. As a Browns fan, not happy.matcar;1959285; said:Prolly a good fit. He's nasty. They're nasty.
A team's scheme or position coaches can play a major role. Torrence picked the Vikings because he believes their defensive scheme fits him. Boren picked Baltimore over Denver and St. Louis because the Ravens, at least for now, lack offensive-line depth and because he's familiar with the position coach. Andy Moeller coached Boren for two years at Michigan before Boren transferred to Ohio State.
"It played a pretty big role," Boren said of his familiarity with Moeller.
After players had to wait in limbo for months, time is of the essence. They must immerse themselves in their playbooks and hope they're not too far behind.

Could Boren start at RG vs. the Chiefs?
As late as Tuesday, Justin Boren was lining up at right guard, sandwiched by center Bryan Mattison and rookie right tackle Jah Reid on the first offense.
What that means, however, for the Ravens? preseason home opener against the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday night is uncertain. It?s becoming increasing unlikely that starting right guard Marshal Yanda (back spasms) will suit up, and either Reid or Oniel Cousins could be a mainstay on the second line at right tackle.
So could Boren be in line for his first start? The undrafted rookie out of Ohio State is not sure.
?I don?t know,? he said. ?That?s up to them. We haven?t talked about it. When they tell me to go in there with the ones, I?ll go in there with the ones, and I?ll try to do my best. If they?re willing to give me that opportunity, it?d be great. If not, I?m happy to just play my role.?
On the team?s unofficial depth chart, Boren is listed as the third left guard, while Andre Ramsey is the third right guard. But in practice on Monday and Tuesday, it was Boren who was lining up at right guard.
Boren said he has learned a lot from playing with Mattison, left guard Ben Grubbs and left tackle Michael Oher.
?I think we?re at the point now where I?m pretty comfortable,? Boren said. ?There are times when they sometimes bring a different blitz or something and you have to make an adjustment. But overall, I think I?m comfortable. And like I said, I just try to get better every day when I go out to practice.?
Boren could return to the second offense if the team decides to start Cousins at right guard and Reid at right tackle, which was the alignment on Saturday and Sunday. That suits Boren fine, but he acknowledged that going to undrafted rookie to preseason starter would be an honor.
?It would be crazy,? he said with a grin. ?That would be unbelievable. It?s something that I would have to grab and try to make the most of.?

Rookie G/C understands Ohio State-Michigan rivalry -- intimately
Justin Boren was a first-team All-Big Ten selection in his last two years at Ohio State and a second-team All American in 2010 there.
But prior to playing for the Buckeyes, Boren spent the 2006 and 2007 campaigns at Michigan. His decision to transfer after the 2007 season coincided with Rich Rodriguez taking over the Wolverines program and resulted in him sitting out in 2008.
Boren, an undrafted rookie guard/center who is now with the Ravens, acknowledged that it wasn?t easy becoming only the third player in history to play for both of those teams in their storied rivalry.
?Yeah, it was pretty crazy,? said Boren, whose father Mike was a linebacker for Bo Schembechler. ?When I was getting recruited, it was always Ohio State or Michigan. They were the two schools I was choosing, and I loved them both. It was the hardest decision ever. So when stuff didn?t work out at Michigan, there was really only one other place that I considered playing, and I thought, ?Why not?? I knew it was a big rivalry, but it worked out great for me, and I wouldn?t change anything.?
Boren said it wasn?t difficult for him to switch allegiances.
?When I got to Ohio State, everyone welcomed me with open arms,? he said. ?They were awesome, and the fans embraced me. It was really an easy transition.?
Boren said his family and friends fully supported his decision. Others, however, weren?t quite as amenable.
?Some of my old teammates at Michigan weren?t quite as happy, but some of them were real supportive,? he said. ?I got a lot of flak from Michigan fans though.?
Boren?s decision to sign with the Ravens reunited him with offensive line coach Andy Moeller, who held the same position with the Wolverines when Boren was there.
Asked if Moeller holds his Buckeyes background against him, Boren smiled and said, ?No, not at all.?
Offensive line
The Ravens always keep nine, and six are set, leaving three spots open. Mark LeVoir, Bryan Mattison and Ramon Harewood are the favorites, but look out for undrafted rookie Justin Boren from Ohio State. The others in the mix are Jason Murphy, Andre Ramsey and Tim Barnes.
