OL Justin Boren (Official Thread)

The results were mixed. He benched 225 pounds 28 times - a solid showing. But his unofficial 40-yard dash time of 5.54 seconds placed him 44th out of the 49 linemen who ran.

Justin's 40-time wasn't great, but it doesn't mean a lot for guards.

He had a shuttle time of 4.75 (middle-of-the pack for OGs), and a 3-cone drill time of 7.57, which was near the top of the list for OGs.

He didnt participate in either the broad or vertical jumps.

So overall he did OK - not great, but not as negative as it sounds by reports focusing on the 40 time.

Hate to break it to you dude but 40 time is probably the leading indicator for success in the NFL at Offensive Guard. Or so I've heard on ESPN.

Damn me for listening to those idiots on the NFL Network!

CFN.com take on Bored post-Combine:

http://cfn.scout.com/2/1051512.html

10. Justin Boren, Ohio State 6-3, 318
Positives: Has the attitude of a blasting run blocker. Goes full tilt all the time and wants to bury people. ? Extremely strong. He won?t get moved around and he?ll do the pushing. ? Great leverage. Has the body to get underneath defenders and control the play.

Negatives: No athleticism. He has to work only in a phone booth. ? Quit Michigan and went to Ohio State partly because he didn?t like the workouts or what was needed to handle the offense. He?s not built for an up-tempo attack. ? Struggled through a knee problem last year.

Ummm...no CFN, he left scUM because he wanted off the sinking ship.

Justin Boren had a much better 40 time today, running a 5.21 and 5.15, after recording a 5.54 at the combine. We were told afterward that Boren had a sprained ankle at the combine, but they didn't tell anybody. He said he's dropped about 25 pounds since the Sugar Bowl. His vertical was 32" and broad jump was 8'0", which he was happy with. He said the Baltimore Ravens have been talking to him quite a bit. Andy Moeller is an assistant with the Ravens and he was Boren's offensive line coach at Michigan. One of the frequent topics to come up when Boren would speak to the various NFL teams was the fact that he transferred. Many organizations view that as a question mark.

"I've heard that," he said.

"I don't know why it would be a question mark. The new system up there didn't fit the kind of player I was. The whole offense, the atmosphere, everything. When I was getting recruited, it was either two schools: Ohio State or Michigan. So when things didn't work out up there, there was only one school that I wanted to play for. I had to pay my own way. I don't know how they can question anything where I walked on here and paid my own way for three years.?

?At the combine some teams tried to hit me hard with that, and I don't really understand it. I tried to explain my side and I think towards the end, they got the picture. They understood a little better. I don't know how anyone can fault me. If you took a survey of a thousand people, I don't think one would tell you that I made the wrong decision.?

With representatives from 29 teams in attendance, the biggest gainer was the player for whom the 40 arguably is least important, but offensive lineman Justin Boren was feeling good just the same.

“After the Combine, there was half of the stuff I felt good about and half of it I wanted to do better, and I’m pretty happy,” he said after posting a top time of 5.19 that is .35 better than he put up at the Combine.

Boren, who played guard at Ohio State and can also play center, vertically jumped 32 inches and made an eight-foot broad jump in the friendly confines of the WHAC.

“You’re in the place you’ve been training for your whole career, so I think it puts you a little bit at ease,” said Boren, who battled a sore ankle in Indianapolis that he said was heeled now. “The Combine just has all the cameras, so many people, but it’s nice working out here.”

I'm not surprised they questioned him. It was probably one of those questions that they really don't care about the answer, they just want to see how he reacts to it.

It's pretty cut and dry. There was a coaching change to a spread offense with lighter more agile lineman. Boren is your classic downhill bruiser. I would question him more if he didn't leave.
