Ohio State's Boren reunited with former Michigan teammate

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

INDIANAPOLIS - In 2007, two young Michigan offensive linemen - Justin Boren and Steve Schilling - were roommates and good friends.

They envisioned playing together for four years and continuing to build on Michigan's football tradition.

But when coach Lloyd Carr left after that season, so did Boren, transferring to Ohio State. And a friendship was put on ice.

"I had not spoken with him since the day he left Michigan," Schilling said yesterday at the NFL combine.

That's what being on opposite sides of a bitter rivalry can do.

It didn't help that while Boren went on to be part of Big Ten title-winning teams, Schilling had to endure three years under coach Rich Rodriguez, which included unprecedented back-to-back losing seasons before Rodriguez was fired in January.

"There obviously are hard feelings when someone is going to transfer," Schilling said. "You wish he would stay on your team. But Justin is a good guy and he had to make the decision he had to make, and I forgive him for that."

The two were reunited Wednesday at the combine, at dinner.

Schilling called the scene "really interesting. There was that kind of awkwardness at the start."

The conversation soon warmed, though.

"It was good being able to catch up," Boren said. "We talked for awhile. He's still the same guy I remember, and he said the same about me. It was neat."

At the combine: Boren paves way in family

Ohio State offensive lineman Justin Boren said he takes some pride in being the first of three football-playing brothers, in part because he can pass along what he's learned to Zach, a junior-to-be fullback at OSU, and Jacoby, a senior-to-be offensive lineman at Pickerington Central who has committed to OSU's recruiting class of 2012.

"I'm real proud of both my brothers, and they're both going to be great football players," Justin said yesterday at the NFL Combine. "It is neat because I get to experience everything first, and then I can coach them up and tell them what to expect.

"It's good for them to have someone tell them exactly what's going to happen. Zach can tell Jacoby what his first OSU camp will be like. And now I can tell Zach what the combine is like."

He is assuming Zach will be invited to the 2013 combine. The way it's going, that's a pretty safe assumption.

Guard trio look good
Georgia OG Clint Boling, Ohio State OG Justin Boren and TCU OG Marcus Cannon also got off to good starts. Boling (6-4⅝, 308) is coming off an impressive Senior Bowl and appeared to have a solid and well-proportioned frame. Boren has trimmed down (6-2⅞, 309), and we will be watching to see whether this weight loss helps to improve his overall agility and movement skills during workouts.

USC tackle Tyron Smith made the best impression on McShay and Weidl by adding 22 pounds from his college season. Smith weighed in Thursday at 307 pounds. The analysts also explain why Florida interior lineman Mike Pouncey and three guards -- Georgia's Clint Boling, Ohio State's Justin Boren and TCU's Marcus Cannon -- are being noticed.

his mental makeup is in question after a transfer from Michigan

so, he transfers from Michigan in 2008 which proceeds to go 15-22 over the next three years with no wins over their rivals and the worst, most embarrassing bowl loss in the history of the program which also happens to be the only bowl game they even make it to

he transfers to Ohio State which proceeds to go 33-6 during the same time frame, including 23-3 with Boren as a starter and 2 BCS bowl victories for good measure

Justin Boren has the same number of BCS bowl wins at Ohio State as would have had wins over ranked teams if he had stayed at Michigan

in conclusion, fuck any clown that thinks Boren made a bad decision, if anything, it proves that he is an excellent judge of character, saw the writing on the wall, and saved his ass... how many players from Michigan are currently participating in the combine? (I looked it up... two)

[sarcasm]Because players always stay with the same team throughout their entire career in the NFL. Duh![/sarcasm]

Boren works out

Offensive lineman Justin Boren was the first of the nine Ohio State players at the combine to go through drills and workouts.

The results were mixed. He benched 225 pounds 28 times - a solid showing. But his unofficial 40-yard dash time of 5.54 seconds placed him 44th out of the 49 linemen who ran. The linemen's 40 times ranged from 4.93 seconds (Jason Kelce of Cincinnati) to 6.06 (Isaiah Thompson of Houston).
