OT Dawand Jones (All B1G, All-American, Cleveland Browns)

Faalele from Minnesota didn’t seem to have much problem and he’s of similar size. As long as these guys can keep their athleticism, stay low(as much as they can) and keep their base, they should have success. The Jones’ should be a clear beginning to a more dominant run game.

There was a lot of fan talk about Jones being too big to be a good run blocker; can't bend, can't get low enough, etc...

Only OL in the Big Ten to have 90+ run blocking grades in 2021

Tyler Linderbaum, Iowa
Dawand Jones, Ohio State
He struggles to get to second level guys. He envelops his primary guy.

We shall see if a different coach asks him to do different things or keeps asking him to do what he’s not as good at.

I don't disagree and completely agree that, while you have to challenge players, it doesn't make sense to ineffectively deploy assets. Ideally, I'd like our RBs to be able to handle second level defense on their own, especially if they're running through a hole blown open by a tackle. Our #1 back ought to be able to beat a LB or safety in space with forward momentum more often than not. Maybe you pull a guard to help with that or motion Rossi to act as a lead back.

Since Ohio State had the number one passing offense and the number 47 run offense last year, it is surprising to me to read in 11W that Dawand Jones "had the eighth-best run blocking grade in the country (90.6) last season, per Pro Football Focus, his pass blocking grade (78.8) ranked 40th in the nation" while Petit-Frere’s PFF pass blocking "grade (60.0) ranked all the way down at No. 197 in the country."

I guess it says that we have a great quarterback and receivers, and yes, it was time for a new offensive line coach.

Eye test tells me that Dawand was very good in pass pro with the exception of the ttun game.
This points to a weakness against top talent pass rushers (guess he didn't get to practice against many last year).
Same eye test tells me that he wasn't great in the run game. He did well when directly engaged but whiffed on far too many plays.

Sounds like a kid that's still raw and learning the position at a high level. I wonder if his main issue is the speed rushers. Those seem to be kryptonite for very large OL.

The eye test tells me that Dawand is HUGE.

“At the end of the season you normally get a draft grade. I had seen mine, I definitely had seen that it was like fourth or fifth round,” Jones said Thursday. “I think after playing my season and just seeing my potential, I think coming back one more year could definitely do me some good. … I wasn’t surprised. I hadn’t really played much, first year as a starter. I wasn’t really expecting much. It’s almost like how NCAA basketball players test the waters almost. It was kind of similar to that.”

“There was conversation in the building, I know there was conversation outside the building. You just identify where you think you could go in the draft and you decide whether you think that makes sense for you and your future,” Day said last Tuesday. “He wanted to come back and be a first- or second-rounder, that’s his goal. And so he’s been challenged with a set of things that he needs to get done if he wants to get there.

“I don’t think there’s any question he has the ability and he has the talent to be one of the better tackles in the country. Now whether he is or not, there’s certain things that he’s gonna have to get accomplished here in the offseason, and then during next season, to get to that point. And consistency is gonna be one of them. But he’s done some good things and I think he knows what those things are that he wants to get done.”
