Colerain lineman a team player
Smith cares about one thing: Cardinals' success
By Jeff Wallner
Enquirer contributor
Colerain has won nine consecutive games since losing to St. Xavier in the season opener. Their success largely can be attributed to a simple offensive philosophy: run, run, run.
The Cardinals have rushed for more than 3,600 yards this season, an average of 370 yards per game.
Colerain had five players among the top 20 in rushing yards in the Greater Miami Conference, led by junior quarterback Gary Pride and junior fullback Trammell Williams.
"It's easy for me," said Williams. "We've got the best line in Ohio."
Anchoring that line is perhaps the best offensive lineman in the state - 6-foot-5, 300-pound senior guard Connor Smith.
There are no statistics to measure the performance of individual offensive linemen. That suits Smith just fine. He relishes in his anonymity with the Cardinals.
"We just play hard all the time as a team," Smith said. "We work really hard in practice as a team. You can't give credit to any one player."
Smith's exceptional talent has not gone unnoticed.
"With the triple-option you have to have unselfish players," said Colerain coach Kerry Coombs. "Connor's that type of kid. So are all of our players. But, Conner is so intense on the field. Star players sometimes take plays off, but he doesn't. He plays nasty all the time."
Scout.com called Smith "the most dominating offensive lineman in the Midwest."
Coombs said Smith, who has orally committed to Ohio State, possesses a "whistle-to-whistle" intensity but is just as good a leader off the field and in the classroom.
Smith is a three-sport star at Colerain. He was an Enquirer All-Star in both football and basketball. He also excels in the shot put.
Colerain, ranked No. 2 in The Enquirer Division I area coaches' poll, is No. 20 in USA Today's Super 25 poll. The Cardinals are rolling into the state playoffs on a nine-game winning streak.
The Cardinals are projected to qualify for the state playoffs and many believe they are poised to make a serious run for a second consecutive state title.
The accolades continue to pour in for Smith, who was recently named to the roster of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which annually features the top 78 prep football players in the country.
The U.S. Army All-American Bowl will be Jan. 7 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
"It's a great honor," Smith said. "I feel really blessed to be a part of that team."
