Player of Year Smith knocks down, picks up foes
Connor Smith was the best high school football player in the Cincinnati area this year, and also one of the nicest.
Smith, a Colerain senior, heads the annual all-area team as Enquirer/Channel 9 Player of the Year.
The 6-foot-5, 305-pound Smith is known for his brute strength, sound technique and explosiveness off the line. He also is known for absolutely burying his opponents, then gracefully helping them up.
"That's how I was taught," said Smith, son of former Ohio State lineman Joe Smith. "You play hard through the whistle, and when it's over you help your man up."
Colerain statistics showed Smith with 150 "knockdowns" in 10 regular-season games.
Said Colerain coach Kerry Coombs: "I got an e-mail from a girl in the Oak Hills band, praising Connor. She didn't know his name; she just said she was so impressed by how No. 77 (Smith) kept picking their guys up after knocking them down."
Smith played both tackle and guard in three years as a varsity starter. This year's Colerain team averaged 48.6 points and 364 yards rushing a game, with a 10-2 record and a regional semifinal appearance.
"There probably isn't a better pure blocker in Ohio than Connor Smith," said Steve Helwagen, managing editor of Ohio High magazine.
Smith will sign with Ohio State in February. He is the highest-ranked Cincinnati-area senior by most scouting services, rated the nation's No. 22 prospect overall and No. 5 offensive lineman by Scout.com.
Smith, who has a 3.6 grade-point average, also plays basketball and throws the discus and shot put for Colerain.
Smith this year has been chosen Division I first-team all-state, Greater Miami Conference offensive player of the year and Gatorade Ohio player of the year. He was the only local player selected for the U.S. Army All-America Bowl, which will be held Jan. 7 in San Antonio. Coombs also said he has been told Smith will be a Parade magazine All-American when that team is announced.
Smith was chosen player of the year in a vote of Enquirer and Channel 9 sports staffers. Other candidates included CHCA quarterback Doug Browne, Colerain linebacker Tyler Moeller, Covington Catholic quarterback Drew Ellison, Highlands tight end Ben Guidugli, Indian Hill quarterback Mike Scherpenberg, St. Xavier defensive end Alex Albright and running back Darius Ashley, and Winton Woods running back Hosea Simpson.
