OL Bryant Browning (Official Thread)

OG Bryant Browning: No. 70 (6-3, 310)
Possesses a thick overall base for the position and does a nice job overall of keeping his pad level down initially off the snap, extending his arms into blocks and displays some natural anchor strength. Possesses strong hands and is tough to disengage from inside once he can lock out. However, is only an average athlete for his size, will allow defenders to gain an initial step on him off the snap and can be slow to quickly get into blocks shooting off his frame. Lacks the type of balance and/or lateral agility to consistently mirror through the play. Has the power to push most college defensive linemen past the play once they gain a step, but he won?t be able to do the same in the NFL.

Isn?t the type of run blocker you would expect from a guy his size. Gets a bit overextended into blocks, fails to keep his feet under him and doesn?t generate much of a pop on contact. Lacks ideal balance through the play and will fall off blocks easily at times. Exhibits average coordination on the move and can break down in space, but isn?t overly rangy when asked to get out to the second level.

Impression: Is a big body, but isn?t real impressive in the run game and looks more like a free agent type guy to me.

The current seniors have never won less than 10 games in a season, have never not won a Big Ten championship, and have never not beaten Michigan.

They don't want that streak to end now, in their final year with the Buckeyes.

"It's up to us to carry that on," said Browning on Tuesday at the Big Ten meetings in Chicago. "We don't want to be the class to say, ?We've been part of all these good teams, but we didn't succeed at the end.'"

The Buckeyes, for the fourth straight year, were picked to be the league champions in a preseason poll done by the media. The goals go beyond a conference championship, said Browning.

"Going into the year, we've got the goal and desire to be a national champion," he said. "If we lose one game, the chances of that could be over with. So we've got to focus in and not take anyone lightly."

Ohio State lineman Bryant Browning is known for his infectious laughter, but he has overcome family tragedies. He says his laught is his mother's, who died when she was only 40.

COLUMBUS - Through the wall of his office, Ohio State coach Jim Tressel can hear the laugh. It's loud and long and frequent. It's fifth-year senior offensive lineman Bryant Browning, and for Tressel, it's reassuring.

"I can hear him almost every day," Tressel said. "I know we're OK when I hear him laughing in the locker room."

Ohio State senior cornerback Chimdi Chekwa, Browning's roommate, hears the laugh and sees the smile even more often. They are Browning's natural reaction to nearly everything -- wins, losses, practices, tests. The Glenville grad and Cleveland native isn't the class clown, but instead the perfect audience, almost unable to muster a smirk or scowl even when anger or disappointment is appropriate.

"To see him mad is something that you should really take in and try to remember, because you never see it," Chekwa said. "Any bad situation, he'll make a joke out of it, even if the bad thing is happening to him. He's by far the funniest person I know."
"Browning is the truth" Ginn Sr. said. "He's legit academically, he's legit as a football player, he's loyal and he's got his life in order. He is never going to let you down and never going to embarrass you. If you could have your own kid, it would be Browning."

"He's pretty special," Tressel said. "I don't rank [my players], but he's special."

Another one of those lowly 3*'s that Bollman has coached up, and methinks that he might get a sniff from the pros. Certainly at least honorable mention all Big Ten. Great story and good human being. Assume that with his intelligence, he's well on track to get his degree this year, can anyone verify?

Family matters
Bryant Browning lost his mother at age 12, but thanks to his brother, he never lost his way.

MAKING THE GRADE: Right guard Bryant Browning (70) not only is a starter on the football team, but he's also a solid student. The marketing major has a 3.3 grade-point average.

The call came out of the blue one summer morning.

Fifteen-year-old Robert Browning III couldn't believe it. His younger brother, Bryant, 12, had found their mother suffering a heart attack.

She was taken to the hospital, but hours later, Valerie Browning was dead at age 40. She had undergone cancer surgery, but seemed mostly recovered from that. All seemed fine until that July 2000 day.

"It blew our minds," Robert said.

Already, he and Bryant had faced a challenging childhood. Their parents had divorced years earlier, and they bounced around from house to house for awhile.

They ended up on the east side of Cleveland, in a gritty neighborhood where crime and drugs were both a threat and a lure.

The death of their mother certainly could have jarred Robert and Bryant off track. But it didn't.

Rather than drift into trouble, the boys were carried in the current of a family with firmly rooted values _ of hard work, education, and achievement.

Both boys ended up excelling in school and sports. Both got college athletic scholarships. Both played right guard and wore jersey No. 70.

One graduated with two degrees and is a software developer, the other is an all-academic student and a fixture on the offensive line of Ohio State, ranked No. 2 in the nation.

Grandparents, great-grandparents, uncles, coaches and their father all played roles in steering the boys straight.

But maybe no one had more influence in molding Bryant Browning into the person he is today than his older brother.

"He always understood what was going on around me, and he always did the best he could to help me make the right decisions," Bryant said. "He always tried to be a good example."

BB is probably the classiest player I came across in my time at OSU. He is a smart, hardworking young man with a great, can do attitude. I guess a way I can describe him would be a friendlier, more personable Kirk Barton in the way he focuses on football and really puts the time and effort into his game and his studies.

btw, Kirk is a good guy. Those that know him know he is someone who gets SUPER serious when it comes to football (practice, film, and of course game time.. BB just does it with a friendly demeanor and a smile.
