Panthers clean up waiver wire
September, 4, 2011
By Pat Yasinskas

As expected, the Carolina Panthers are not sitting still a day after trimming their roster to 53 players.

The Panthers hit the waiver wire hard Sunday, claiming five players at positions of need.

The Panthers claimed wide receiver Seyi Ajirotutu from San Diego, defensive back Stevie Brown from Oakland, nose tackle Marcus Harrison from Chicago, defensive end George Selvie from St. Louis and defensive back Josh Thomas from Dallas.

To make room for them, the Panthers waived defensive end Everette Brown, guard Bryant Browning, receiver David Clowney and defensive end Thomas Keiser. The Panthers also released veteran safety Kevin Payne.

The Carolina Panthers rounded out their practice squad this afternoon with three promising players, per Steve Reed

Steve Reed
The Panthers filled their final three practice squad spots, signing DE Thomas Keiser, OL Bryant Browning and C Jeff Byers (USC, 1st year).

I'm thrilled to see Thomas Keiser get added to the squad. While he may be young, undersized and inexperienced he showed some serious drive in the preseason where he finished with 9 tackles and a sack in four preseason games. In time I think he could develop into a rather effective pass rusher with skill to play both in a 4-3 and 3-4 front.

Bryant Browning also played well in spot time at both guard spot during the preseason. While he's similarly raw to Keiser he could develop into an important rotational lineman.

Carolina Panthers Jermale Hines (36) and Bryant Browning (60) have known each other since 2005, when Hines transferred to Cleveland's Glenville High, where Browning was playing. Jeff Siner - [email protected]

When Jermale Hines and Bryant Browning say they're teammates, they really mean it.

That's because, with the exception of one season, they've been on the same team since 2005 - in high school in Cleveland, college at Ohio State and now as rookies with the Carolina Panthers.

"It's very interesting and exciting at the same time," says Browning, an offensive lineman on the Panthers' practice squad.

The history between Hines (a reserve defensive back) and Browning goes back seven years.

A shoulder injury to center Ryan Kalil in the third quarter forced the Panthers to make additional changes along the offensive front. Right guard Geoff Hangartner shifted to center, and undrafted rookie free agent Bryant Browning, who was inactive last week at Tampa Bay (12/4/11) after being signed off of the practice squad (12/2/11), made his NFL debut at right guard. Kalil returned on the Panthers' next series.

Roster Moves: The Panthers placed guard Bryant Browning on injured reserve and signed center Jeff Byers from the practice squad. Browning suffered a wrist injury in practice on Friday. He played in one game, seeing brief action at right guard versus Atlanta (12/11/11), and was inactive at Tampa Bay (12/4/11) after being signed off of the practice squad (12/2/11). Browning becomes the 16th player to be placed on injured reserve this year, the most in team history.

Getting to know

Guard Bryant Browning

Height: 6-4

Weight: 325

College: Ohio State

NFL experience: Browning is a veteran who played in one game for Carolina in 2011 after spending 11 games on the practice squad. He signed as an undrafted free agent with the Rams in 2011 but was waived and picked up by the Panthers two months later.

The scoop: Browning is listed on the depth chart as the backup right guard behind Geoff Hangartner. He sat out of practice Wednesday and was on the exercise bike without shoulder pads.

Bet you didn?t know: Before attending Ohio State, where he was Big Ten All-Academic his junior year, Browning was ranked No. 1 in his high school?s graduating class in Cleveland.
