5/13
By The Bank...Brian's coach talks about what makes him the top center prospect in the nation and how they plan to use him next season...still hearing from other schools but he is 100% solid to OSU.
Fremd junior Brian Bobek earned his spot among the best of the best in the great throwers history at the Palatine school. With his fifth-place finish in the shot put (57-8), Bobek became the 13th Viking in history to earn a shot put medal.
"A month ago I was worried about even making it to state," said Bobek. "A week and a half ago I started to turn it on and it carried over into this weekend."

The air around the practice fields at Fremd was thick and, aside from the sound of clacking pads, unusually quiet.
Big expectations have the Vikings taking a business-like approach to the preseason, which is fine by senior center Brian Bobek.
"Guys are taking everything very seriously," the 6-foot-2, 275-pound Ohio State recruit said. "We all know that what we're doing right now is what really counts for the whole season. We're very focused because we know this could be a big year."
Bobek was one of 12 juniors learning on the fly last season for Fremd, which finished one of the program's best seasons with an 11-1 record and a spot in the Class 8A quarterfinals. It didn't hurt that Bobek was perfecting his craft under the guidance of Tribune first-team all-stater and U.S. Army All-American Christian Lombard, now at Notre Dame.
Now it's Bobek's team. As a result, the Vikings are taking on his soft-spoken, no-nonsense demeanor.
"All the fat guys hang out together," Fremd coach Mike Donatucci joked of his linemen. "They're with each other all the time. Both Christian and Brian are relatively quiet. But the thing they both have in common is their work ethic. They don't take any time off. They're looking to do more and more. And it's contagious."

For a few moments Thursday, Fremd senior Brian Bobek allowed himself to wear a smile.
In front of family and friends, Bobek, a 6-foot-2, 278-pound lineman and Ohio State recruit, was selected to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 8 in San Antonio. He was one of 90 players chosen.
"I'm really enjoying today, but I'm still thinking about my team and what we need to do to get things turned around this year," Bobek said of the Vikings, who are 1-4. "We need to win out the rest of the regular season to have a chance at a playoff bid. Our focus is on Hoffman and getting a win (Friday) night."
Bobek's selection is the school's second in two years. Notre Dame lineman Christian Lombard was picked last season. Loyola's Chance Carter (Northwestern), Johnsburg's C.J. Fiedorowicz (Iowa) and Proviso West's Kyle Prater ( USC) also were picked last season..
"I went to the U.S. Army combine last year and I watched Christian go through it all. I know what to expect," Bobek said. "The idea of actually getting the chance to play in the game was pretty out there, but in the back of my mind I felt that if I kept working hard I could maybe get a chance to play. It's an honor to represent my team and my school in San Antonio in this game."

PALATINE, Ill. - It hasn't exactly been the best of seasons so far for Palatine (Ill.) Fremd four-star center Brian Bobek. Yet, at least for a few minutes on Thursday afternoon, the 6-foot-2, 278-pounder took his mind off the task at hand - trying to help his team dig out of a 1-4 start - during the U.S. Army All-American Bowl presentation.
"I'm just really excited to have an opportunity to play in such a big game," Bobek said. "It gives me a chance to play against some of the best guys in the country and it should give me a great head start for college. It's a great honor to be selected to play in this game."
Bobek is the second player in as many years from Fremd playing in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, following former Fremd Viking and current Notre Dame offensive guard Christian Lombard, who played in the annual all-star game last January.
"I went to the U.S. Army combine last year and I watched Christian go through it all last year and I know what to expect," Bobek said. "The idea of actually getting the chance to play in the game was pretty out there but in the back of my mind I felt that if I kept working hard I could maybe get a chance to play in the game. It's an honor to represent my team and my school in San Antonio in this game."
