OL Brian Bobek (Iowa St grad transfer from Minnesota)

Simply as an observation - we now have 5 scholarship athletes on the roster who are not Freshmen and who are listed as OL this season and were also listed as OL last season. Has to be an all time low number.

Summer doesn't go to waste as U transfer keeps training

Article by: PHIL MILLER, Star Tribune

Updated: August 23, 2012 - 7:29 AM Ex-Buckeyes center Brian Bobek is growing into his future Gophers role.

So how did Brian Bobek spend his summer in preparation for joining the Gophers football team in two weeks? By breaking NCAA rules.
Well, at least it could sound that way.
"I'd say I'm definitely doing more work with a strength coach than the NCAA would allow," said the former Ohio State center, who transferred to Minnesota and is slated to be able to play in 2013. "It's about all I do."
The catch is, the coach is his father, Jeffrey, a former Iowa offensive lineman, and the workouts are at his suburban Chicago home, not as part of a university program. Totally legal, in other words -- and by Bobek's estimation, entirely effective.
"He's got me doing work on the field for agility. He's got me doing a lot of conditioning out there. He's got me lifting all the time," Bobek said of his bigger-and-better program. "I'm stronger than I've ever been."
Bigger, too, which may come as a shock in Columbus. According to the Columbus Dispatch, new Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer believed that a 270-pound center wasn't big enough for his offense. But Bobek has put on more than 15 pounds this summer, can bench press 480 pounds, and believes he will report to Minnesota for fall semester at 290 pounds, at least.

With Gophers starting center job available, Limegrover seeks 'sense of urgency' from Bobek
Posted by: Joe Christensen under Gophers spring football Updated: April 1, 2013

A key question for the Gophers heading into spring practice was whether Brian Bobek, a transfer from Ohio State, would play himself into the starting center job.

Jon Christenson worked with the first-team offense at center last week and showed no signs of relinquishing that spot. Offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover, who doubles as the team?s offensive line coach, reiterated Saturday that all five jobs on the line are up for grabs this year, with 15 legitimate candidates.

?Any one of those guys could be a starter when we hit UNLV [on Aug. 29], including Brian, so that carrot?s right at the tip of his nose," Limegrover said. "All he needs to do is reach out and grab that thing.

?What I?ve gotta get him to do -- he?s such a laid-back, such a nice kid -- is I?ve gotta get him to bite a little bit. I?ve gotta get a sense of urgency with him, that hey, ?You go out there and you take care of business, and I?ll figure out what to do with the other four spots.' And he picked it up a little bit [Saturday].?

#Gophers lineman Brian Bobek has transferred to Iowa St #Cyclones as a grad transfer walk on per @Stanz51

Bobek’s collegiate story has been, to say the least, one hell of a roller coaster ride.

Bobek committed to Ohio State in March of 2010, then signed with the Buckeyes as a four-star recruit in February of 2011. In June of 2012, after redshirting as a true freshman, Bobek left OSU and ultimately landed at Minnesota.

After sitting out the 2012 season to satisfy NCAA transfer rules, Bobek missed all of 2013 because of a heart condition. He played in three games in 2014, then started the first five games of the 2015 season at center before a concussion sidelined him for the final eight games of the Gophers’ season.

Because of the injury/health issues in 2013 and 2015, he was given a sixth season of eligibility.

Just sayin': Heart condition...concussion....in 5 years only played in 8 college games...already graduated....just maybe it might be time to "hang them up" and get on with life after football.
