Oklahoma Sooners (official thread)

“I actually like Oklahoma [to win it all] this year. I think when you look at the big four, the other three teams Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, all had some significant losses to the NFL draft. All of them lost their quarterback, and when you look at Oklahoma they’re a team that’s got a veteran quarterback. And what have we seen under Lincoln Riley when he has a veteran quarterback? Two Heisman trophies and one quarterback that was a Heisman finalist. So you know they’re going to be potent on offense. They’ve got Kennedy Brooks, Eric Gray, Marcus Major at running back, a loaded receiving corps -- which I rate No. 2 in the country -- and my No. 1 rated offensive line in the country.”

Spencer Rattler returns under center for OU
after putting together an impressive first year as a starter, in which he finished Top-10 in the country for passing yards (3,031, 10th), average yards per attempt (9.6, 10th), and passing touchdowns (28, 8th). He also posted a 67.5% completion rate as well as the 11th-best QB rating (172.6) in the country.

But Steele believes the Sooners have more than just their usual high-powered offense at their disposal this season. According to Steele, this could be one of Lincoln Riley’s most complete teams in his time in Norman.

“And the big difference, I think this is clearly Lincoln Riley’s best defense he’s had in his five years here," Steele said. "Last year they showed a lot of improvement, only allowed 21.7 points per game. This year eight starters are back. They’ve got some players up front on the d-line that I rated as the No. 3 d-line in the country. I think Isiah Thomas, Winfrey, Redmon, Benito -- all NFL caliber guys -- the linebacking core I rate No. 9 and the DBs No. 3 in the country.

Oklahoma Sooners RB Mikey Henderson off team as arrest warrant sought in connection with alleged robbery

Oklahoma running back Mikey Henderson has been dismissed from the team, Sooners coach Lincoln Riley said Tuesday.

Henderson was identified as the third member of an alleged robbery on April 15 along with then-OU players Seth McGowan and Trejan Bridges, according to public information officer Sarah Jensen of the Norman, Oklahoma police department.

Jensen said a request was made to the Cleveland County District Attorney's Office on Tuesday afternoon for an arrest warrant for Henderson.

McGowan and Bridges were dismissed from the team in May, and a warrant was issued for their arrest on felony charges of robbery, conspiracy and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. A man told police that McGowan contacted him via Snapchat to purchase marijuana, was told no, but proceeded to the man's apartment anyway, where the man was hit on the head with a gun and kicked multiple times. He said Bridges pointed a .45 Glock with an extended magazine at him and threatened to shoot and kill him. The third suspect, identified as Henderson, allegedly stole a backpack from the man's room with items including "jewelry, marijuana, high dollar shoes and cash."

Spencer Rattler enters the 2021 season as a Heisman trophy favorite and could very well be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. However, Riley thinks he can be even better, more so than the hype he’s getting leading into a new year.

He spoke about Rattler at Big 12 Media Day on Wednesday.

“He did so many good things and certainly don't want to discount that but the guy can play so much better,” Riley said regarding Rattler. “For him, we've really focused this offseason on him physically. Improving the way he can move his body, all those things. I think he's taken some steps and him getting full command of our offense and how we want to attack people….It's just a constant journey at that position and he's just on it right now.”

“We dominate this league and always have had to think we dominated the Big Eight, we dominated the Big 12,” Switzer said on ESPNU Radio. “But, (you won’t be playing) Kansas from here on (out and we'll be playing Texas every weekend….We’ll be a top-tier team and in the big SEC or we’ll be a team that people know that they got to beat because we’ll be talented. But our players here are good players and Lincoln Riley is an excellent coach and he has a tremendous advantage when recruiting quarterbacks….He calls the play the game plans with a quarterback, they look at film together they meet together, they spend 24 hours and all hours are spent on football, how many hours there are, a quarterback(is going to spend with) Riley….So it is a tremendous advantage. Look, Oklahoma’s nearly won three consecutive Heisman’s. Think about that.

“You know, Jalen Hurts was the runner up, could have easily won it. But the other two won it back to back. And we've recruited a couple of guys now that are considered top prospects. Spencer Rattler this year, favorite to win the Heisman. And then you have the guys, I'll tell you what, I don't know if you've seen the guy or watched him on Hudl, I know I have, this Caleb Williams from Washington DC is a hell of a quarterback. Very talented player. They now swiped a guy from California, 2023, gonna be an Oklahoma Sooner. He’s considered the number one prospect…. It's how they play and perform in terms of how good they are….”

Oklahoma's Lincoln Riley, angling for field position vs. Nebraska, 'might have been the first coach in history' to challenge his own team's INT

On a day when No. 3 Oklahoma scored its fewest points ever under Lincoln Riley in a 23-16 win over Nebraska, the Sooners coach almost made history for another reason.

After Oklahoma cornerback D.J. Graham made a highlight-reel one-handed interception on fourth down on his own 3-yard line with 8:16 remaining in the game, Riley immediately went and talked to the officials.

"I might have been the first coach in history to challenge a play we got an interception on," Riley said with a laugh. "I was hoping it would've gone down."

That’s exactly what happened in Norman on Saturday when Spencer Rattler threw his third interception in four games, as the restless crowd began chanting to put in Rattler’s understudy.

Oklahoma survived another close call with a 16-13 win over unranked West Virginia, and without the outlier of a five-touchdown performance against FCS opponent Western Carolina in Week 2, Rattler’s touchdown to interception ratio would be 3:3 in 2021.
