I guess the good thing is they've got awhile to figure things out before they play Penn State on October 28

They have had all calendar year 2017 to figure it out and it's still fucked.

Pardon my cynicism but I don't see the offense getting unfucked mid season if they couldn't unfuck it with 9 months of prep time.

Wow

If anyone needed validation of the Dantonio playbook on how to stop this offense there it is.

Play back, keep everything in front of you (meaning within a 10 yard box from the LOS) and see if they can execute enough to drive the length of the field. Odds are they cannot.

Then I think back to the 2014 NC, and all of the long balls vs Wiscy, Bama, and Oregon. It's no wonder Zeke had so much room to run.

"They" is the key word. Barrett had gorgeous throws on the two deepest balls. Easy drop and contested drop.

Heck, on that one key 3rd/4th down throw down the right sideline, he had a pretty darn good throw while getting crushed. It touched the WRs hands (Hill?). But it was an extremely low percentage play, under duress, over the outstretched defender, and the result was predictable.

Hubris is going to be the downfall of this team.

Look at Indiana and Oklahoma. Both anticipated being pressured up front and designed gameplans accordingly to feature quick passes, etc. and exploit the defense. We routinely just try to do whatever we want to do rather than anticipating our opponents. When we can't do what we want, instead of adjusting the gameplan, we try a couple designed QB runs that don't work, then try to do what we want to do, which the other team sees coming from a mile away.

Yes. To be clear, I am saying the combined output of WR/QB right is not enough to consistently hurt defenses to make them come out of that plan.

They are so confident in it at this point a few close calls that got behind them aren't going to do it.

Going to have to make them pay in the Wisconsin '14 sense of the word pay. Even then, I would imagine the next guy will try his luck and see if the OSU offense can do it again.

This is really bad

So I went back and looked (sorry I was bored at work)....there have been 6 losses in UFM's career at Ohio State. Yes there is a direct correlation between RB carries and outcomes - especially in losses:

2013 MSU (B1G CCG) - Hyde 18 carries, Hall 1 carry. OSU scored 24 points in this game.
2014 Clemson (Orange) - Hyde 25 carries (Wilson, Philly Brown and Heuerman all had carries). OSU scored 35 points in this game.
2014 VA Tech - Elliott 8 carries, Samuel 5 carries, Wilson 2 carries. Ohio State scored 21 points in this game.
2015 MSU - Elliott 12 carries, Miller 2 carries. Ohio State scored 14 points in this game.
2016 Ped State - Weber 21 carries - Samuel 2 (74 yards on one carry, -3 on the other) - Ohio State scored 21 points
2016 Clemson - Weber 6 carries, Samuel 5 carries. Shutout.

It's clear to me this offense goes because of the running game and NOT JT running the ball, but a varied attach featuring the running backs, H backs and even receivers on the edge.

It's been beaten to death but when Ohio State's offense goes east/west it absolutely sucks. When they attack the LOS diagonally things are much more successful.

JT had WAY MORE time to throw the damn ball than Mayfield did the whole game. One guy made plays and the other didn't. It isn't an oline problem.
Mayfield had the time he needed, whether getting the ball out quickly or buying time with his legs.

JT deserves the criticism he deserves. He doesn't deserve criticism for every failing of the offense. It wasn't all Beck. It wasn't all Fickell. It wasn't all blocking sleds. It's always a bunch of things.

The main problem with a QB switch is:

1) Joey Burrow is not available.

2) See #1. Haskins has a high ceiling but also a low floor. He's not a consistent operator yet. He's also magnitudes worse in the run game. You think defenses are daring 2017 JT to run? That's nothing compared to what they'll do against Dwayne (and could not get away with against Joey).

2) Any lingering confidence JT has will be completely shot if you bench him. Who leads in his place? Mike Weber? Not great.

As I mentioned after the Clemson loss, it makes absolutely no sense to spread the defense and then attack it east/west. The whole theory behind the spread is to get defenders out of the box and then attack the box.

But what do I know? Trust the coaches, I guess.... :roll1:

I was close to throwing my remote at the screen during the Clemson game. It felt like everything North-South was working or resulted in something positive. Samuel's longest run was up the middle if I remember correctly. Weber was doing work despite his fumbles. Throwing deep twice to Victor resulted in two PI calls. The play calling has been fucking baffling. If I didn't know better I theorize that someone dear to Urban is being held hostage by the Mafia and he's forced to throw games. I refuse, absolutely refuse, to believe he's just clueless.
