They haven't flipped a coin since the 80's. In texas we have districts made up of 6 or 7 teams. You play all of them every year and the top three make the playoffs. the district champs and then the next two. in the event that two teams have the same district record then head to head matchups come into play. Then there are two playoffs D1 and D2, D1 for our purposes is for the school with the largest enrollment of the 3 playoff qualifiers. D2 is for the other two. you then play a Area championship, regional championship, state semi's and statefinals. In D2 there is a Bi-district game. So in the end the D1 champ would be 14-0 and the D2 champ would be 15-0 if they were undefeated. Its not perfect by any stretch but at least it is settled on the field
our system is also settled on the field, you see ohio has so many school districts and "leagues/conferences" that using the system you mentioned would be impossible in ohio, nothing against your system, it sounds great but just wouldn't work in ohio
although once the teams get to the playoffs, its basically the same as the texas, where as you have "districts" we have "regions" and once you win your "region/district" you face one of the other 4 region champs and after you win that, you are face the team other team that beat the other region team, this is getting confusing to explain like this, let me try something
this is just a example
4 regions in each division
8 teams in each region
First Round-Region Games
team 1 plays team 8=say team 8 wins
team 2 plays team 7=say team 2 wins
team 3 plays team 6=say team 3 wins
team 4 plays team 5=say team 4 wins
so teams 2,3,4 and 8 advance to the next round in this region
Second round-Second Region games
team 2 plays team 8=say team 8 wins
team 3 plays team 4=say team 4 wins
Third Round-Region Final Game
team 4 plays team 8=say team 8 wins
alright, lets say that same process happened in the other 3 regions
Forth Round-Semi Final Games(i'm going to identify Regions 1,2,3 and 4 with the letters a,b,c, and d respectbily
team 8a plays team 8d=say team 8a wins(they advance to the State Championship Game)
team 8b plays team 8c=say team 8c wins(they also advance to the State Championship game)
Fifth Round-State Championship Game
team 8a plays team 8c-say team 8c wins
in this situation Team 8c would now be State champions, of their division
