Ohio University to play Ohio State in 2008

Also, at least the 110 gets a free ride to Columbus and a free showing of how a REAL band performs.

Now come on... the 110 is entertaining. Totally different style and all, but nonetheless entertaining. Either way you look at it, both bands are very good at what they do. Not sure that either band would be good at what the other does though. God forbid ever hearing TBDBITL playing "Long Train," or "Unskinnybop." I'd have to puke. But I do enjoy hearing the 110 do it.

Being alum of both schools, I'm very much looking forward to this game. You can poke fun at the 110 all you want but surely you must understand that in Athens, people go to games to watch the band and drink. In Athens, the band is THE ATTRACTION. In Columbus, the band is part of the game day experience. Having enjoyed both, I'd have it no other way at either school.

Anyhow, as far as the game goes, it's going to be a fun one. Packing up my dad and my two boys for the game. Hope to start a tradition and have some great memories.

:oh:

If this is anything like the Northern Illinois game, there won't be time for the OU band until after the game. Too much going on pre-game and halftime to get them on the field. Despite the blowout there was still around 20-30 thousand that stayed to watch the NIU band. More than one of their home games.

Help clear the fog away from my memory......wasn't it Ohio U that brought suit against OSU for the right to be called THE Ohio University, since they are both state universities?

I seem to recollect that there was a law suit where OU wanted to prohibit OSU from calling themselves The OSU or somesuch.....want to say that the courts laughed the OU folk out of the courtroom, but not sure.

The other schools seem to enjoy poking fun at tOSU or THE OSU monikers, so wanted to have some ammunition to return the volley. Thanks and a tip of the hat!

Ohio State formally filed the lawsuit. That, however, was only after OU's lawyers sent a cease and desist letter to Ohio State to stop using traditional athletic and cheerleader outfits that had said "Ohio" going back to the 20's. So yes, we technically started the lawsuit...a lawsuit we never wanted to fight...only because FredOU got a petty bug up its insignificant little ass and sent us a cease and desist letter.

I'm not sure how the lawsuit ended. I believe FredOU earned the right to copyright "Ohio" but that Ohio State retained the right to continue using traditional uniform designations if they chose to do so. Whatever the result, it doesn't really matter. Let them have their little victory. We're crushing FredOU in the things that really matter.

It's funny how badly they cling to their being older as some point of pride. If I were them, I wouldn't want to advertise it too loudly seeing as it just points to the fact of how poorly the state leadership felt about them 140 years ago in deciding to pass them over and found a new university to be the state's flagship institution.

I love reading their forums -

Citing loses to Illinois, LSU and Florida, Bobcat fans feel they may be able to beat us....

...back to the locker room.

The sad thing is that when Tressel, out of some genuine and heartfelt (though I view it as misguided) love of "Ohio football," takes the boot off their throats twelve minutes into the second quarter, allowing FredOU to make the game seem far closer than the reality of the talent on the field would truly dictate, those sick big brother hating jack offs will do a pathetic victory dance about how "close" they came to knocking off their big brother.

Agree its frustrating but I don't think JT's misguided for doing it.

IMO its got less to do with a love for Ohio football on the college level and more to do with a love of the great relationships he enjoys with Ohio high school football coaches. The same guys he visits with for the blue chippers have kids at the Ohio MAC schools that they care very much about. The attention to detail JT shows by not rubbing their noses in it 3 times a year is one of the biggest reasons for his success to my way of thinking.

Like you, as a fan, I'd love to see him drop 60 on some of these clowns but in the big picture its just not worth it.

What I would point out to all the Fredo's is that if they were important enough to actually get vested, look at what JT does to schools like NU Minny and IU when he gets a chance. They don't get the protection of being anyway shape or form related to Ohio football and they aren't good enough year in and year out to worry about pissing them off for future games so low and behold, they miraculously get the snot beat out of them damn near every time.

Moral of the story is that could be every Fredo if not for the concious decision by JT to keep it as respectable as possible. The only time you see truely lopsided scores is when the Fredo just can't prtoect themselves from even the most vanilla of play calling and liberal substitutions.

Nice post, Jax. I have to agree with your line of reasoning. While I would certainly like to see the Fredo schools symbolically punished on the field for their decades of backstabbing Ohio State in other areas, JT is undoubtedly correct in his approach to the situation.

Besides, while we may not be hanging 70-3 scores on them on the football field, we certainly are blowing them out off the field, in faculty and student recruitment, in rankings, in research funding and so on.

We may see that this year. With the depth that OSU has, they may continue to pull away from Fredo until the 4th quarter when we get to the very end of the bench and play guys that aren't on the official roster. By that point, it may be too late to generate the illusion of a moderate beating rather than the brutal mawling that it will have been.

Some stats on this topic:

Since OSU adopted the policy of playing an Ohio team (Fredo) every year the results are as follows:

1997-2007 OSU @ home vs Fredo
Record: 15 wins 0 losses
Total points: 536-158
Avg Score: 36-11
Largest MOV: 49 points
Smallest MOV: 7 (2003 vs BGSU)
OSU highest/lowest score: 51/20
Opponents highest/lowest: 20/0
Scored 50 or more: 1 time
Scored 40-49: 4 times
Scored 30-39: 5 time
Scored 20-29: 5 times
Scored less than 20: 0 times

Under JT
Record: 10 wins 0 losses
Total points: 342-93
Avg Score: 34-9
Largest MOV: 45 points
Smallest MOV: 7 (2003 vs BGSU)
OSU highest/lowest score: 51/20
Opponents highest/lowest: 17/2
Scored 50 or more: 1 time
Scored 40-49: 1 time

Scored 30-39: 4 time
Scored 20-29: 4 times
Scored less than 20: 0 times

In 10 games JT has only gone over 40 on an Ohio school twice (both times a helpless Kent team).

In his last 3 games vs NU alone he's gone over 40 three times with two of them being over 50.

In 6 games vs IU he's gone over 40 three times.

In 5 games vs Minny he's gone over 40 twice and never less than 30.

So to recap:
10 games vs fredo = 2 times over 40 (20% of the time)
14 games vs B10 weaklings = 8 times over 40 (57% of the time)

I know Fredo fans like to think they showed us and all that but its pretty clear JT is taking it as easy as he possibly can on them. If fredo fields a team that can defend themselves vs basic run plays and single front defenses they can be assured of a respectible mid-20 point loss and a nice check.
