Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

This team was fifth without any of the guys now in the Portal...
Because PSU and Nebraska nuked the field, and we hit some early bonus points and had some upsets. The total amount of team points was not good. Between the guys graduating, likely transfers and misses on the recruiting trail, I think we have to hit the portal now or the gap for us will be much bigger in the future.

There were some bright spots in the tourney as I said already, but wrestling to get 5th is not the standard here. And Ryan has to evolve on the portal somewhat with a sniper approach like most schools are doing. Nobody is going to touch PSU in the near future unless it is OK State, but only two AA's is not the mark regardless of where the team placed. Need more wrestlers on the podium and while it was a really fun tourney to watch as a wrestling fan in general, it was disappointing to not have more OSU wrestlers at least in position to AA.

Folks act like OSU is comparable to or has the pedigree of Iowa or OKST or PSU. They aren't/don't. They have no history of being in that tier. We have a middling coaching staff and no RTC to speak of. Fifth with the coaches and wrestlers we had is probably better than it should have been.

Ryan screwed up with Kharch and Welsh no doubt but he has been one of the top three coaches in the last decade.
Welsh took more money and said, "I'm staying a Buckeye" then goes in the portal and leaves. He isn't that big of a loss...

I agree with both of you. I think the ceiling of this team is mid tier, 6-4 range. I also think scoring 51.5 points is underperforming. Per Wikipedia, here are the point results of 5th place finishers, where OSU landed, and the champion going back to 2015.

2015 5th: 71.5, OSU 1st: 102
2016 5th: 81, OSU: 86 3rd, PSU: 123 1st
2017 5th: 86.5, OSU: 110 2nd, PSU: 146.5 1st
2018 4th: tied for 80, 6th: 61.5, OSU: 134.5 2nd, PSU: 141.5 1st
2019 5th: 62.5, OSU 96.5 2nd, PSU: 137.5 1st
2020: Covid
2021 5th: 69, OSU: 46 9th, Iowa: 129 1st
2022 5th: 59.5, OSU: outside top 10, PSU: 131.5 1st
2023 5th: 64.5, OSU: 70.5 4th, PSU: 137.5 1st
2024 5th: 67, OSU: 62 8th, PSU: 172.5 1st
2025 5th: 51.5, OSU: 51.5 tied for 5th, PSU 177 1st

OSU scored 62 points last year and finished 8th. Scoring 51.5 points for 5th place, considering more than 2/3 of our total came from Mendez and D’Emilio, is not very good. Based on our team’s pedigree, we should have scored more than that and it’s not unreasonable to have those expectations.

Tom Ryan is a great coach, except for brick throwing. In fact, the whole staff needs to relinquish those duties. Yikes. The assistants are not up to par, imo. Great guys, questionable coaching prowess. Maybe Stieber. Not bashing, but I don’t know what Bo Jordan brings to the table. There needs to be a shake up, but I doubt that happens. What’s Jason Nolf doing these days?

Love looking at those 'numbs, Romanowski. Don't like 'em, but thems the hard facts. tOSU staying the same 5th, but losing ground to the winners. Cannot fathom in any universe that tOSU takes a backseat to Nebraska - in anything. PSU has succeeded where we have been trying, and Cale has built a dynasty on the other side of the Allegany's. If you were the AD, what would you do? Probably more specifically, who would you target to lead the singlet guys? Sounds like what actually kept Day in place, before he won Natty. PS, when the wrestlers have a match, is entry free, or is there a ticket charge? IOW, is this a revenue producer? Go Bucks!

Really good to have those numbers, I knew the team points and guys on the podium were down but not by how much. I agree with @MPhillips that we are not going to be of the ilk of PSU or OK State anytime soon in the team race. Probably Iowa for that matter. That's not my expectation at this point, it's just to have more guys on the podium and more team points.

But losing Welsh is just going to make it worse (whatever the circumstances were), redshirting a finalist when he didn't want it was a bad move. The RTC decline made it worse and apart from Stieber and Jaggers, I don't know about the assistant staff either...we need to make some changes and I won't pretend to know the answer, but we need to shake some things up. If we could somehow get Snyder back as a coach, that would be huge but that's all I've got off the top of my head.

We need some corrections heading into next year but as to my point on the portal, if we don't hit it at 2-3 weight classes, next year will look rough outside a few guys for the most part imo.

If we don't hit the portal hard, we're in trouble. Ryan might be done at this point, one year more max.

That's scary to hear because I just don't feel like we're very attractive in the portal, and not sure if we have the NIL or pedigree to compete for the top end talent. It's a frustrating perspective to know that losing Welsh is a massive blow for us and just another 'meh' addition from PSU's perspective.....it's like football but reversed.

I'm trying to focus on the bright side, which is Mendez going for title 3, and getting a full year of action for Davino and Cannon. I thought Davino was impressive consistently and earned more time but what do I know.

Unfortunately there is a trend where the distance between us and the top is getting larger, and with new blood in the pool that only makes it harder to climb back up the rungs. We need new energy, someone who can get out, recruit, drive NIL commitment, etc. Kyle is about to be 30, is he ready to come back yet

I just read on the Penn State forums that Zack Ryder has hit the portal. They mad…bigly. They bigly big mad. He was projected to be their replacement for Starocci. After Welsh committed to Penn State, Starocci sent out a tweet, “Zack Ryder all day baby” then deleted it. But…at the end of the day, their omniscient, walk on water, lord and savior Cael Sanderson made it so and so it was good. Maybe we swap wrestlers, but he probably goes to Okie State like Facundo did.

Would be nice to pull it off, that would be a huge addition. Not sure what the odds are though. I'm going to miss seeing Rocco in an OSU singlet though, he was an absolute brute force and so enjoyable to watch.
