Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Mendez was a man with that ride out. Prior to that he escaped in the riding time 30 second tiebreaker with 3 seconds left. He then went into I’m stronger than you mode and rode out Bartlett for the win. Heart thumping win for sure.

He deserved that match 100% - some questionable decisions and strategy by Bartlett and it rightfully bit him in the butt. Love to see the aggressor get rewarded.

Mendez gets a chance for revenge on Hardy, who won their only matchup this season 9-8 at the B1Gs.

Kept switching over from WBB to wrestling. Unfortunately, just saw snippets of wrestling, mostly, 'plays of the day' type of stuff. And by the time I could identify any Buckeyes (Mendez looks monster-like), they were switching. Some mean looking throws, tosses etc. Not entirely certain the guy standing on his head was real (?), but certainly qualified for entertainment. Always rooting for our guys, and hope to see several more AAs to start next year. Go Bucks!

Just happened to turn on wrestling, and watched Mendez win. Wow. Don't pretend to understand the nuances of that brutal sport, every other sport stops play when the first drop of blood appears, but in wrestling, they soldier on. Leads turn on a dime, and thought Mendez's duck was cooked early on, but then a couple of near falls put him in the lead for good. Probably the hardest six minutes in sports. Congrats!

Really enjoy watching the wrestling tournaments, but I have some comments about the state of the sport.

WTF is going on with eligibility? How can Starocci go for a fifth title? Whatever happened to 5 years to play four, plus medical redshirts and Mormon missions? He won 4 titles after the Covid year, he should be done - it’s annoying that he’s in a category by himself when I don’t believe the 7 previous 4-time NCAA champs had the same opportunity (and they shouldn’t have had).

How can Steveson wrestle this year, when he started in November, 2018? I was glad he got beat, although I don’t understand how the Okie State transfer from Air Force thought he could wrap himself in an American flag before competing against a guy that has won an Olympic Gold for the USA. And after 4 years at Air Force, shouldn’t he have had to start his military commitment?

Those matches started and ended the finals last night, and I get that they increased interest in the tournament last night, but allowing all these guys to extend their eligibility makes historic records get broken in situations where I don’t think it should be happening.

Also, it’s long past time to revise the 10 weight classes - the 125, 133, 141, 149, 157, 165, 174, 184, 197, 285 groups were established when the average football O-lineman weighed between 240 and 250. That average is now clise to 320 at major college programs. So there are a slew of large, athletic guys between 220 and 350 pounds that only have the 285 pound weight class as an option if they want to wrestle,

If they added something like 220, 245, and 325 pound classes, a lot of strong, athletic guys would be drawn into wrestling who currently don’t attempt the sport. I realize that would impact records based on 10 weight classes, so if they don‘t want to do that they should change the classes to something like 130, 140, 151, 163, 176, 190, 205, 220, 255, and 300, which would better reflect the weight distribution among potential athletes.

A take down and four near fall points will do…Mendez is a 2 time national champ! Congrats on a great season! Mendez is a dog! He deserved it!

Make it back-to-back titles for Jesse Mendez.

The Ohio State wrestler won his second straight NCAA championship at 141 pounds on Saturday. Mendez cemented his legacy as one of the program's all-time greats with the title, as he accompanies Kyle Snyder (2016, 2017 and 2018) and Logan Stieber (2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015) as the most recent wrestlers to win multiple national championships for the Buckeyes.

It was an amazing tourney even though overall it was not a great performance for our boys, that was the best finals I can remember watching and the ending at HWT was absolutely epic, I am glad Steveson got upset after his shenanigans to start the match. We had a group of 20+ wrestling junkies up at the cabin hootin and hollerin the entire time, wrestling matches breaking out in the living room so much we just moved all the furniture out. Wrestling is great because if you love the sport, you can enjoy the tourney even though we had a down year. I say down year when we tied for 5th, but a lot of that was bonus points from select guys and that was not a great team performance not matter where we landed. But seeing Jesse get back-to-back titles was worth it alone, all the other great wrestling was a bonus.

As to your point, eligibility and weight classifications deserve to be looked at. It's ridiculous the age of some of these guys and the number of years of eligibility. I kind of understand the one year of COVID-related eligibility, except for the fact they didn't extend that to the seniors in 2020, which is absurd to me. Pletcher and Kollin Moore were primed to win their first title, and had it stripped away by a stupid decision on eligibility...they didn't just want to wrestle all year, they wanted to win it all in March. It was an absolute boneheaded move by the powers that be.

As to weight classes, I was saying during the Tourney that I would like to see an 11th weight class added between 197 and 285, say 235 or 240. Feldman is a perfect example, he's an incredibly talented wrestler but is a tweener that can't get down to 197 but also can't carry the weight to wrestle against the elite big guys. He gets in on shots constantly but can't finish because the guys just use their weight to pancake him. To me just adding that weight class would solve any issues at the heavier weights, but adding a couple of pounds to the other weights could make sense. I have done zero research on it, but that is just my gut instinct response.

Masanosuke Ono just committed to Penn State. He beat Marcus Blaze on his way to the U20 world title last fall and then followed that up by teching his way to the senior world title a few weeks later. He beat two world champs along the way in dominating fashion. He then beat Spencer Lee last month in a super match. Penn State has a log jam at the lower weights now. Lilledhal and Davis are coming back. They are bringing in Blaze and Ono. My guess is that Ono comes in to replace Bartlett at 141, Lilledhal stays put at 125, and Blaze takes the 133 spot, where we see Davis transfer. Alex Facundo is in the portal too. We would be crazy not to go after him, but my guess he heads back to Michigan or to Okie State.

PSU has one of them good problems, everyone wants in. We'll be playing for second or third for awhile. We just have to mentally adjust (by we I mean me
...I thought we'd be in contention for a title soon).
