Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

"Logan looked really sucked down at 61kg and I would imagine 60kg would be too much of a cut. Same for Nate at 55kg."

Cutting (too much) weight is the worst part of competitive wrestling. Hope our guys get slotted in where it's not unhealthy.

In other news, saw that Nick Heflin will be joining Lou Roselli as an assistant coach at Oklahoma. Congrats!

Just to add to that discussion, here are the proposed weight changes for the freestyle Olympic weights:

The non-Olympic weights might be 55, 65, 75, 85 which would give you 10 for international non-Olympic competition.

It looks like the reason for his departure was not the 125 lb weight class....
That write up doesn't sound good for Jose. The courts will sort it out of course but you can't blame Tom Ryan for cutting ties.

In rivals news PSU got a verbal from Michael Beard today, top 195 class of 2018. They now have verbals from #s 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 for class of 18'. It's being called the best class in the history of college recruiting.

Outstanding commitment. Given that Hoffman is only a junior and Singletary will wrestle heavyweight, the timing will work out really nice. Gavin will come in during Kollin's junior year and get a redshirt and work out with him. Should only sit behind Moore for a year and be ready to rock his sophomore year. Should give us a really solid upper weight lineup with Romero (174), Ethan Smith (184), Hoffman (197), and Singletary (Heavy).

Isaiah White to Nebraska thus ending any existing thought he would end up at OSU. The recent trend at OSU seems to be offering kids that can get additional aid through academic accomplishments essentially lessening the burden on the 9.9 limits. I've heard that Nate and Kyle are getting very little of that wrestling money because they are almost entirely funded through academic scholarships. White probably would have needed more $$$ and didn't fit into OSU's plans.

Well bummer. Was hoping he would make it in but wondered with the Campbell transfer. He will probably tear it up for Nebraska.

Are the 9.9 full scholarships an NCAA thing, or an tOSU thing? If an NCAA thing, then OK. But if an tOSU thing, would figure that the athletic budget could easily afford to go higher, and still pay $20 odd million into tOSU general fund.....help me clear the fog away please......

NCAA
Facts about wrestling recruiting:

Most wrestling scholarships are partial scholarships, meaning you will have to pay for some portion of your education.
Per team there are 9.9 scholarships at the DI level, 9 per team for DII programs, 8 for NAIA programs and up to 16 scholarships for NJCAA programs.

The 9.9 is calculated based on in state tuition so there is some variety among different schools in different states. Most programs look for creative ways to combine the 9.9 with academic, merit or grant type scholarships. I've read that many of the elite PSU kids aren't taking a dime from the 9.9 because they are getting full rides from other sources. There are also reportedly deals where wealthy donors will pay off any debts that elite wrestlers accrue while in college after they have graduated. That kind of stuff is off the NCAA radar for now.

Good commit, Keaton is pretty inconsistent but when he is on, he can be lights out. The national freestyle tournament was last weekend in Akron and the Ohio State recruits wrestled very well. DeCatur destroyed everyone in his path at a very tough weight and won it all, won 12-2 and 10-4 in the round robin finals. Our new commitment Gavin Hoffman also won his weight class and took out a very good opponent in Ryan Karoly in the finals round robin, beat him 7-0 and 8-1...convincing wins. Myles Martin also won his weight in the university division for freestyle, good tournament for him.
