Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Penn State wrestling: Preseason individual 2022-23 rankings released, per InterMat

College wrestling is still roughly five months away from kicking into high gear, but it’s never too early for a look ahead. InterMat recently released its preseason rankings across all weight classes ahead of the 2022-23 season. This is a fresh set of rankings that include last year's national champions that returned to school, transfers and newcomers. Penn State wrestling ended up having nine of its 10 weight classes listed in the preseason set.

Penn State has four No. 1 rankings in its projected lineup for next season. They are all returning national champions: Roman Bravo-Young, Carter Starocci, Aaron Brooks and Max Dean.

Plus, there are some other hammers who will vie for All-American and national champion laurels next season. All in all, it looks like another team-national title is in reach for Cael Sanderson’s crew.

125 - NO. 18 ROBBIE HOWARD
133 - NO. 1 ROMAN BRAVO-YOUNG
141 - NO. 17 BEAU BARTLETT
149 - NO. 29 SHAYNE VAN NESS
157 - NR JOE LEE
165 - NO. 24 ALEX FACUNDO
174 - NO. 1 CARTER STAROCCI
184 - NO. 1 AARON BROOKS
197 - NO. 1 MAX DEAN
HWT - NO. 2 GREG KERKVLIET

So what you're saying is Penn St. is a wrestling version of Bama? Maybe Ryan could bring in Urban for a consult.

Well actually, I didn't say anything, I just answered bigdog3300's question as to how good Penn State will be in wrestling this season by posting an article. However, I will say that:

1) when you have 4 #1s and a #2 out of 10 weight classes; Penn State has a real good change of winning the championship again in 2022.

and

2) when you have won 9 championships out of the last 11 chances; yeah, currently Penn State is the wrestling version of 'Bama. Hell, they may even be real close to being the current wrestling version of UCLA basketball (between 1964 and 1975).

2022 Penn State
2021 Iowa
2020 Canceled due to Covid-19
2019 Penn State
2018 Penn State
2017 Penn State
2016 Penn State
2015 Ohio State
2014 Penn State
2013 Penn State
2012 Penn State
2011 Penn State

Did not intend to be offensive if that's how you took my comment. Guess I forgot the "LOL" after name-dropping Urban.

VA Tech is turning into a pretty normal dual towards the beginning of the year. Love the matchup, usually VA Tech has a very solid lineup and its great competition outside the conference to start the year.

The U20 freestyle Pan American Championships started today in Mexico and 3 Buckeyes are in action (Info from teamusa.org). At 57 kg is Andre Gonzalez who was runnerup in qualifying but for whatever reason got the spot. Nic Bouzakis is going at 61kg and Nick Feldman at 125kg. Great experience for these guys. Bouzakis will also compete at 61kg in the U20 World Championships in Bulgaria in August.

Poster at Ohio Wrestling.net saying Gonzalez has won the championship at 57kg and Bouzakis beat PSU's Wil Betancourt 10-0 to win 61kg, using the Steiber "gut wrench". Logan was there in a coaching role Yes, that's the same Betancourt who wrestled at OSU last season and transferred this off season. No word yet on Feldman who won his semi 10-0 Seems the competition is a little meh in the U20 freestyle. Good offseason results nonetheless.

Edit...Feldman also took the championship.

Former Ohio state champion Garett Lautzenheiser has transferred from West Va. to Ohio State according to the Canton Repository. He started as a freshman last season and went 7-14 in the tough Big 12. 133# weight class. Won state at Louisville H.S. in 2019 and was rated #1 in 2020 but Covid cancelled the tournament.

In other news, the Fargo U16s are going on this weekend and two commits wrestling are Vinnie Kilkeary and Rocco Welsh, who both survived the first two rounds.

The competition was definitely "meh" for whatever reason, but agree the results were very good for our guys. I can't wait to watch these guys, we've got a crap ton of talent coming up through the program. I was talking to my dad about the team (also an avid wrestling fan) and on paper we've never had a class this talented come in. And the back to back classes give incredible depth. I know I already said it, but PSU better enjoy their title this year because I legitimately think we're going on a 2-3 year run. Wrestling is a tad more predictable than other sports with recruits when you can see them dominating established wrestlers like the Big 3 are doing. On that note, the wrestle offs are going to be very entertaining this year.

Great experiences for the two OSU incoming freshmen as Bouzakis went 2-2 and Feldman finished 5th. Bouz actually wrestled better than his final results as IMO he got screwed by the ref in a really close match, but then again I'm no expert on freestyle. He did have two awesome falls in the prelims. Feldman I think learned what it's gonna take to compete with top talent when he's giving up 45-50 lbs. Makes his probable redshirt not that bad of an idea. Flo has some of Feldman's action in their free section if anyone's interested.

FLO has this thing where they predict the All-Americans for the coming season so here are the OSU probable starters' rankings...
Heinselman...not A-A
Bouzakis...#8
D'Emilio...not A-A
Sasso...#2
Gallagher...not A-A
Kharchla...#4
E.Smith...#5
Romero...no listing(?)
Hoffman...#7
Orndorff...#7

Don't know why Romero was skipped but pretty sure he made A-A as well. Also saw on Bucknuts that Sonny Sasso will be
signing with Va.Tech, who coincidentally will be opening the season against the Buckeyes on Nov.11.

From Va Tech's forum:

HOKIES WRESTLING ONCE AGAIN PULLS A TOP RECRUIT. SONNY SASSO OF PENNSYLVANIA
By: APrimusHokie on September 3, 2022, 8:30 PM |
The Lads are at it again! Robie,Frayer and Brewer pulls another big time wrestling recruit. Its Sonny Sasso outta Narzath HS in Pennsylvania. Sasso had a breakout year last season where he went 46-0 with 33 falls and only 4 decisions all year. He was a PIAA 3A 189 lbs champion (which is the toughest division in Pennsylvania for wrestling) and the 189 lbs beast of the east champion. Also for people who pay attention to wrestling he's the younger brother of Sammy Sasso. A 3 time All American at ohio state. This is another big time get. This staff is pulling in alot of top notch talent each year and the classes keep getting better and better! He's projected to be a 197 pounder in college
