Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

I know it's a very slow time of year for wrestling news but thought I'd post this tidbit I found on another site...well known high school powerhouse Blair Academy has a 182 pounder named T.J.Stewart that ranks #39 overall and #11 in his weight class going into the 21-22 year. Actually in another ranking I've seen him ranked #5.He just listed his final 5 and OSU is on the list.

Was reading the Ohio Wrestling Forum page and came across this rather exciting recruiting news that actually rivals football recruiting ... this weekend Coach Ryan and the Wrestling Bucks are hosting 2022 overall #1 ranked Jesse Mendez (who's rumored to be an OSU lean), 2022 overall #2 Nic Bouzakis, 2022 overall #5 Rylan Rogers, 2022 overall #6 Luke Geog, along with 2022 commits Nick Feldman, Seth Shumate, and Gavin Brown and 2021 signees Paddy Gallagher, Andre Gonzalez, Brayer Hall, Chase Liard, and Hogan Swenski. If this is indeed factual it would be an incredible coup just to get that much talent together let alone in a recruiting-type situation. Go Bucks and Go Coach Ryan!

Ohio State recruit Gavin Brown (Kentucky) was interviewed by Buckeye Scoop's Mick Walker. Asked about the potential recruits there this past weekend he said "Well, I know both of them (Mendez and Bouzakis) and I think Ohio State fans have a lot to be excited about. And I feel like they'll have a lot of national titles to cheer on and to be there for very soon."
He also said coach put him in a workout group with the aforementioned two plus Paddy Gallagher...would've loved to see the tape of that!

Nation’s Top Prospect Jesse Mendez Recaps His Ohio State Visit, Looks Ahead

Most Ohio State fans know that the nation’s top 2022 football recruit was on campus this past weekend in the form of Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, but football was not the only Buckeye program that had the country’s top prospect on campus. The Ohio State wrestling team and head coach Tom Ryan also hosted the country’s top prospect in one Jesse Mendez out Crown Point (IN) High School.

A projected 141-pound prospect at the college level, Mendez has won near everything he has entered in his high school career. Just this offseason he won junior world team trials and fell just short in the U23 world trials finals. In both events he competed against anywhere from recent college signees to third-year college wrestlers. As for his high school career, Mendez is a three-time state champion in a single division state which essentially means every wrestler in Indiana is in the same division regardless of school size or other factors. Basically, Mendez wins at every level and after a good visit to Columbus this past weekend he is considering wrestling at Ohio State for the next level.

“It was awesome,” Mendez told Buckeye Scoop. “It sucked having to wait because of COVID-19. The dead period getting pushed back, I think it was 15 months, so it was awesome to get out, talk to the coaches face to face, get to meet all the guys, really get a feel for the actual campus, and what I would be doing on a day-to-day basis if I were to go to Ohio State.”

This was Mendez’s first time talking to Ohio State’s coaching staff in person and after so much of the process being virtual he enjoyed learning more about the Buckeyes staff.

“I got a little feel for them over the phone,” he said. “We were having Zoom calls and talking over the phone probably about once or twice a week, texting consistently. I definitely got the idea of what kind of people they were and it was good to really get to know them on a more personal level.”

Top Wrestling Prospect Rylan Rogers on His Trip to Columbus: ‘The visit was awesome’

If you follow Ohio State wrestling and you read Buckeye Scoop then you know that last weekend was a huge recruiting weekend for Tom Ryan and his staff. They hosted seven top 100 recruits and four-fifths of the top five. Earlier this week we caught up with the country’s top recruit Jesse Mendez to discuss his trip to Columbus. Today we caught up with the country’s fifth-ranked recruit and one of the best 184/197 pounders available in Rylan Rogers, a native of the Pacific Northwest.

Just like many wrestling recruits, this was the first time Rogers got to visit a college campus in an official capacity. And, of course, he loved it. Everything from Columbus to the wrestling room at Ohio State stood out for him.

“The visit was awesome,” he told Buckeye Scoop. “I haven’t really been on any official visits so it was all kind of new to me. Columbus is a cool town. It’s pretty big and a good college town. The facilities were like, I think most people would say just unreal. I don’t think I’ve seen a wrestling room quite like that. It was pretty nuts. I like the kids on the team. There were a lot of good kids on the team like Paddy Gallagher and Nick Feldman. I really like those guys, it was a good visit.”

Some guy named Willie Saylor has a Q&A column on Intermat. A question came in asking about the rumored Bouzakis/Mendez package deal and which team made the most sense if true. Willie says Iowa makes the most sense, but has too much $$ tied up in the top weights. Same deal with PSU. So by his reasoning Ohio State..again providing the rumored package deal is true, would make sense. He also says we can believe the families have been discussing this.

Well, things appear to be headed on the downward spiral that we were in headed out of NCAA with Kinner transferring and missing on Rogers. Hate to say it, but I think we are on our way to falling outside the top 5 every year unless we really turn things around in this recruiting class. Far from over, but things are looking bleak right now.

Not much Buckeye wrestling news lately, but did come across an interesting developing story. Seems former 133# national champ Nick Suriano has entered the portal. He started out at Penn St., went on to Rutgers, took last season off to train, and now is looking for somewhere to wrestle his final season of eligibility. Arizona St. is mentioned as the favorite but the Bucks are also mentioned as a possible destination. Would certainly fill our 133#spot even though it's a long shot.

His first year at Penn State was 2016. I guess with a redshirt year and a free COVID year, he'll be eligible as a 6th year senior this fall.
