Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Kind of a mixed bag, but not too bad. Need more from 125 and heavyweight though. Should have redshirted Malik imo. Glad Pletcher got into the finals, that'll help his seed. Really glad to see Luke and Joey win their rematches against their PSU opponents at 133 and 141. Mic is right there at 149, fingers crossed that he saves his best match against Ashnault/Kolodzik for nationals...he definitely can beat them. Hayes' performance was very underwhelming but he really just doesn't fit well at 157, he'll be much better down at 149 next year when Mic is gone. Got more from Campbell than I honestly expected at 165, not a bad tournament for him. Ethan Smith was decent, I could see him winning 4-5 matches, or going 2 and out at nationals...very good wrestler but he's firmly in the middle of the pack and with a very small margin between him and about 15 other guys it seems. Myles was dynamic as usually. Looks like Kollin Moore is going to have to wait one more year to contend for a title, Nickal has a much bigger advantage on him than I anticipated. Just get to the finals and go for a big move like Myles tried last year, it's his only chance. But overall a good tournament.

Singletary grabbed an at-large berth, so we are sending all 10 wrestlers to NCAA's. Not surprising given some of Singletary's quality wins even though he didn't do well at the B1G. What I find VERY interesting is that they are going to seed all 33 wrestlers at each weight for the first time this year. I love that move, should lead to some fairer matches in the opening rounds.

Also, last weekend was the state tournament for Ohio. The Decatur brothers and Karchla all won titles from the Ohio State commitments. great tournament. D'Emilio also won a title by fall in the finals. I am thinking Kharchla might honestly take the 165 spot if he can get down to the weight, he could be an instant impact guy...or 174 if Smith moves up.

As an aside, my Graham Falcons won another state title...it was looking like the streak might end, but they kept it going somehow with the new coach. 19th straight state title. I am curious to see if Bo or Mic goes back to coach there, I have heard that is a real possibility.

Seedings and full brackets were released this week, here is the link. Below are the first matches and seeds for our wrestlers:

125: No. 26 Malik Heinselmann vs. No. 7 Pat Glory (Princeton) - Not a great draw for MH, but that was going to be a given with his seed. Hoping he gets a couple wins in the tourney, but not entirely hopeful that happens.
133: No. 5 Luke Pletcher vs. No. 28 Tim Rooney (Kent State) - Got a better seed than I expected but last year's solid performance at the NCAA's probably helped a lot. Should have a good shot at getting to the quarters and figures to have a rematch with freshman Mickey Philip from Pitt, whom Luke lost a close one to at the beginning of the year. Pretty decent draw.
141: No. 2 Joey McKenna vs. No. 31 Grant Willis (Oregon State) - To be expected, Joey will likely have a rematch with Nick Lee in the semi's.
149: No. 2 Mic Jordan vs. No. 31 Shane Oster (Northwestern) - Really good draw for Mic, has Kolodzik and Ashnault on the other side of the bracket...wouldn't be surprised if Kolodzik pulls off an upset there. In any event, I like Mic's chance to get into finals and hopefully win it for his senior year.
157: No. 11 Ke-Shawn Hayes vs. No. 22 Zac Corson (Ohio) - Brutal seed but can't say I can blame the committee, hasn't been a great year for Ke-Shawn...hopefully he turns it on at the right time...hopefully he can win his first couple matches.
165: No. 21 TeShan Campbell vs. No. 12 Ebed Jarrelll (Drexel) - About where I expected the seed to be, but a pretty good initial draw honestly. Hopefully he wins a few matches for us.
174: No. 19 Ethan Smith vs. No. 14 Kimball Bastian (Virginia) - Not thrilled about the seed, but a decent draw in the first match. But even if he wins, then he gets Valencia the next match.
184: No. 1 Miles Martin vs. No. 32 Bob Coleman/No. 33 Chris Kober - Will wrestle the winner of the pig tail match. Will be interesting to see if Rasheed gets to the finals, that is the only guy I see with a shot at making it close with Myles.
197: No. 2 Kollin Moore vs. No. 31 Brett Perry (Buffalo) - 2 seed as expected, will likely have a tough one in the semi's against Preston Weigel from OK State if he hopes to get a rematch against Nickal. If he does, he should just go for a big move to get the fall like Myles did, nobody is close to Nickal right now.
HWT: No. 16 Chase Singletary vs. No. 17 David Jensen (Nebraska) - Not a bad seed at all, but I feel like a tough first match and even if he wins, then he gets No. 1 Derek White.

I'll go ahead and say we get 5 to the finals, with Myles getting his 2nd and Mic getting his first! A 2nd place overall, not bad considering.

I would love that outcome and am onboard with the optimism! Having grown up and helping out with Mic, I REALLY want to see him get that title. He's such a great kid and works so hard. That being said, it's going to take an almost perfect match to beat Ashnault...but he can do it, he's right there. Definitely saying Myles makes at least one champion and I suspect we get two overall, with one coming from McKenna or Mic. I actually like Joey to beat the Cornell kid in the finals this time. So I'll say we get 4 in the finals and 2 champs. But 3rd place overall, I think OK State edges us. Issue is we have too many weights that aren't likely to contribute much, we're very top heavy. If we want to get runner up, we need wins at 125, 157, 165 and heavyweight. But Tom Ryan teams tend to peak at nationals, so it's far from out of the question.

1st session, Bucks go 8-2, favored in 7 and per their twitter, pulled one upset

125 - Malik loses 12-2 to the 8 seed, will be in the wrestle backs tonight
133 - Pletcher MD for the win, he'll have a AA from last year in the next round from Wyoming
141 - McKenna cruises to a TF, he'll get Kaid Brock from the other OSU tonight
149 - Micah gets the pin :)
157 - Hayes get the easy win, huge! Tough match tonight against the kid from Iowa whose the 6 seed, but expected
165 - Campbell gets the upset! 21 seed takes down the 12, awesome! He'll get the 5 seed from Lock Haven, and I'm just surprised Lock Haven has a wrestling program, let alone a good one.
174 - Ethan loses a close one in SV, so, so close but a good battle to a higher seed
184 - Myles gets the pin, because of course he does. He'll also get a kid from Lock Haven next round so.....wtf
197 - Moore cruises, 12-3
Hvy - Chase gets the win! 16 beats the 17 from Nebraska....he'll get the #1 from Okie State so good luck

OSU in 2nd, PSU looking to run away again but should be a great battle with Okie for 2nd, might be 4 Big 10's in the Top 5

Heinselman got beat 10-0 this morning, he's done. Still don't understand why they burned his RS.

Pletcher with a typical match, beats the #4 Micky Phillipi 3-1. He gets Daton Fix in the semis at 8PM tonight.

McKenna smokes #7 McKee from Minny 11-1. Rubber match against PSU's Nick Lee up next in the semis.

Biggest upset of the tournament to me is PSU's Rasheed Shakur losing to #12 Ness of UNC. That was very unexpected.

Micah up next against Lugo from Iowa.

Campbell went 2-0 this morning, great to see, and delivered us 3 points

Ethan got a win and then followed up with a loss to the 11th seed Lydy from Purdue

Myles Martin dominated, of course

Kollin was argressive and won 17-11

Chase went 1-1

5 in the semi's, Pletcher will have a tough one but is winnable IMO. I expect Myles, Micah, and McKenna to win tonight. Yeah, he takes down Lee. Moore has a winnable won. Could have 4 in the finals for tomorrow!
