Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

TOP 100 WRESTLING PROSPECT J.D. STICKLEY COMMITS TO OHIO STATE

Ohio State now has nine Class of 2018 commitments from wrestlers ranked in the InterMat Top 100, as St. Paris Graham standout J.D. Stickley announced he'll wrestle in Columbus. The former Ohio high school champ announced his commitment via Twitter.

The Graham wrestling program is an NCAA pipeline if ever one there was, and Stickley comes from a wrestling pedigree: his father and uncle were both Buckeye wrestlers in the mid-80s, and three of Stickley's cousins and his older brother Justin are themselves current or former Big Ten wrestlers.

J.D. won an Ohio high school state title in 2017, and though he came up short of winning a second title in 2018, he is still ranked in the top 15 in the country at 138 pounds – No. 8 according to InterMat and No. 14 according to FloWrestling. InterMat considers him the No. 73 overall prospect in the class.

YES! Thought he was heading to Wisconsin honestly, that's why I didn't really bring him up much in here. Comes from an amazing family, the Stickleys are as good of people as they come. Was crushing it later in his high school career, but trailed off at the end of this year (supposedly injury related). When JD is at his peak, he can be an elite wrestler, he's beaten a lot of top guys. Great commit and really excited to see another Falcon land in Columbus.

LOGAN STIEBER WINS WORLD TEAM TRIALS CHALLENGE TOURNAMENT, WILL FACE JOEY MCKENNA AT FINAL X

93280_h.jpg

It is difficult to score an upset against a wrestler like Logan Stieber – doing it twice is something else entirely. Missouri's Jaydin Eierman knocked the four-time NCAA and 2016 World champion out of the U.S. Open in Las Vegas earlier this month, but Stieber repaid the favor with interest Sunday in Rochester, Minn., at the U.S. Senior Men's Freestyle World Team Trials Challenge Tournament.

Stieber's win in the best-of-three finals earned him a bid to Final X, the series of matches that will determine the roster for the Senior Men's Freestyle World Team that will represent the U.S. at the World Championships this October in Budapest, Hungary.

One thing is certain: a Buckeye will wrestle for Team USA at 65 kg.

Joey McKenna punched his ticket to Final X by winning the U.S. Open. Eierman upset the top-seeded Stieber with 6-5 decision in the Open quarterfinals, but McKenna controlled the final match from the outset, winning 7-3.

Since Stieber and Eierman finished in the top three at the Open, they earned the top two seeds in the Challenge Tournament, setting up their rematch in the finals Sunday.

If Eierman had any confidence that history could repeat itself, it was misplaced. Stieber won the first match 10-5, and the second 7-1, putting him in position to wrestle his training partner at the Ohio Regional Training Center for the spot on the World Team roster.

LOGAN STIEBER AND JOEY MCKENNA FACE OFF SATURDAY NIGHT TO MAKE THE U.S. MEN'S SENIOR FREESTYLE WORLD TEAM

Joey McKenna transferred to Ohio State in the summer of 2017 to compete for an NCAA title. He finished third at the tournament in March, and won a Big 10 title in an almost-flawless postseason.

His training partner throughout that run? Logan Stieber, one of only four wrestlers in history to win four NCAA titles.

Saturday night in State College, Penn., the student and the master will square off in a best-of-three series for the right to represent the United States at the World Championship in Budapest, Hungary this October.

"I've been wrestling with Logan since I came here in the fall; he's helped me a lot this past year," McKenna said. "It's an interesting situation where you get to see two teammates and training partners battle it out."

McKenna, a 22-year-old New Jersey native who wrestled the first two years of his NCAA career at Stanford, earned a bid to Final X – the brand name for the new multi-city version of the U.S. freestyle world team trials – by winning the U.S. Open in Las Vegas in April. He won by defeating Jaydin Eierman, the wrestler who upset top-seeded Stieber in the tournament's quarterfinals.

"When I walked off the mat after my quarterfinal match, Coach Jaggers said Eierman beat Logan, and I was like 'What? Really?'" McKenna said. "So he told me to keep wrestling, stay focused and this tournament's all yours. Take advantage of this opportunity."

Men's freestyle 65kg
Joseph McKenna, Titan Mercury WC vs Logan Stieber, Titan Mercury WC

MATCH ONE

1st period: A couple stalemates but no committed shots. McKenna goes on the clock first. Logan tries a slide by but Joey's not giving it up easy. Until he gets wrenched over on to his back, giving Logan a 4 point feet to back. 4-0 Logan with about 90 seconds left in the first.

McKenna in on a shot and Logie ties for a chest wrap. McKenna gets the first exposure, then Stieber kicks over for 2 points of his own before McKenna covers for 1. It's 6-3 Stieber at the break.

Jeff Buxton cornering McKenna, Lou Roselli is in the corner for Stieber.

2nd period: 3 more minutes on the clock, still 6-3 Logie. Double leg for McKenna and he finishes cleanly, then transitions into a turn for two more at the edge. That sequence gives McKenna a 7-6 lead with less than 2 minutes to go in the match.

Stieber in on a shot, trying to convert on the edge, may get a step out, instead, he gets a standing lace-ish roll through for two and regains the lead. It's 8-7 Stieber. Now McKenna is on the attack and gets a step out, making it 8-8, criteria advantage for Stiber due to more 2 point moves. Just 15 seconds to go.

And Stieber holds on to win the first match 8-8. Final X - State College is off to a great start!
