Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Buckeyes fall to Cowboys--no shame there

No. 6 Ohio State Falls to No. 1 Oklahoma State
Buckeyes drop 25-6 decision to top-ranked Cowboys

COLUMBUS, Ohio? The No. 6 Ohio State wrestling team lost a 25-6 decision to top-ranked Oklahoma State Sunday in the Stillwater Regional final at the 2012 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals at Gallagher-Iba Arena. Oklahoma State was one of four regional hosts.

The Buckeyes opened ?Mat Mayhem? with back-to-back wins vs. Boise State (26-9) and Nebraska (21-18) earlier in the day. Against the Cowboys, the Scarlet and Gray received wins from a pair of freshmen in No. 5 Hunter Stieber and No. 20 Josh Demas. Stieber downed Josh Kindig 7-6 at 133 pounds, while Demas upset No. 11 Albert White 3-2 at 157 pounds.
Stieber, a native of Monroeville, Ohio, owned a 5-4 lead heading to the third period, but his lead would not last long as Kindig chose bottom and quickly scored the escape. However, Stieber answered with a takedown and despite an escape by Kindig, held on for the victory.

A takedown and escape by Demas, a Columbus, Ohio, native, was enough to seal his win over White. Although White scored a quick escape in the third period to pull within one (3-2), Demas prevented any additional scoring by the Cowboy. At this point, the Buckeyes trailed Oklahoma State by only three points (9-6).

The losses suffered by Ohio State were close affairs, including a pair of one-point setbacks. At 149 pounds, freshman Cam Tessari had a slim 1-0 advantage going into the third period. However, the Buckeye?s opponent, No. 2 Jamal Parks, scored an escape and takedown in succession for a 3-1 lead and held on for the win despite Tessari?s late-second escape.

Redshirt sophomore Nick Heflin started at 184 pounds and faced Chris McNeil. Heflin and McNeil were knotted up at 2-2 in the third period when McNeil?s escape at the 1:54 mark proved to be the match winner.

Up next, Ohio State will prep for the 2012 Big Ten Championships March 3-4 in West Lafayette, Ind. Purdue University will serve as hosts.

BIG tournament time

Even though it is the Stieber brothers leading Ohio State into the Big Ten tournament this weekend at Purdue, coach Tom Ryan wants all of his wrestlers to seize the opportunity.

Ryan?s goal is to see the Buckeyes, ranked seventh nationally in the coaches? poll, qualify 10 for the NCAA Tournament. Toward that end, he passed out a sheet of do?s and don?t?s, such as what to eat and how much to sleep, leading up to the first matches on Saturday.

?It takes the discipline of knowing they have put a tremendous amount of time ? seven, eight years or more ? into getting to this point, and you don?t want to blow it in the 72 hours or so before,? Ryan said.

The Stiebers ? redshirt freshman Logan at 133 pounds and younger brother Hunter at 141 ? plan to adhere. They are pre-seeded Nos. 1 and 2 in their weight classes, respectively, and know their early efforts could set the tone.

?We usually did the same thing in high school,? Logan Stieber said, referring to their days at Monroeville. ?Being in the lower weights, we usually went near the top, so we both don?t mind trying to get the team going.?

It?s part of the Ryan ethic.

?This is an individual sport, but I think we all do better in anything that we do when we have someone else in mind, when it?s not all about you,? Ryan said. ?When you?re thinking about your teammates, your coaches, your school. ? Whatever it is, when you want to do something with others you?re more powerful. So we try to emphasize that.?

Big Ten Tournament starts tomorrow. The Bucks are coming off a solid showing at the National Duals where they beat Boise State and avenged their loss to Nebraska before falling to Oklahoma State in a match where OSU lost a lot of close bouts.

Everyone is supposed to healthy now, so no excuses this weekend.

Brackets are here: http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools...2/misc_non_event/B1GWRES12BTChampsBracket.pdf

OSU seeds are:

125 - DiJulius #6
133 - Stieber #1
141 - Stieber #2
149 - Tessari #5
157 - Demas #5
165 - Garcia unseeded
174 - Heflin #5
184 - Magrum #5
197 - Campolattano #6
HVY - Capone #9

OSU has typically not performed well at B1Gs, so let's hope they turn that around this year. The Stiebers look like the only real threats to make the finals, and that won't be easy as Logan will likely need to avenge his loss to Dardanes and Hunter will likely need to get past Marion again. The other guy who may have a shot, surprisingly, is Camp. He should win his first match easily and then meet up with McIntosh, who only beat him by 1 last time. A win there and he likely wrestles Powless, who he has also been close with. Unlikely, but a possibility. Anyone else making it would be a total shock. Heflin has the ability to be #2, but by being seeded on Ruth's side he won't get there. 3rd would be a good result.

Should be streaming live on BTN.com and then finals will be on BTN Sunday at 3.

Ok, Bucks, let's get it on!! Coach Ryan wants to take 10 to Nationals. Could happen if everyone wrestles to their seed or better, and Derek Garcia and Peter Capone can score an upset along the way. When is the last time tOSU took 10 to Nationals?

Garcia is unseeded and faces David Taylor (#1 seed from Penn State) in the first round. So, he'll have to come back through the consolation bracket. But I have been impressed with his grit and toughness.

Capone (#9 seed) faces #8 seed in the first round. Then would face #1 seed. But if he can get through the first round, it would make his trip through the consolation bracket much more navigable. I have also been impressed with his grit and toughness as such a light heavyweight (as everyone has).

Does anyone know if the action will be followed on the traditional twitter link?

After the conference tournaments, at-large bids and seeding for Nationals were announced today. We've got 8 wrestlers in. Only empty weight classes are 165 and 184 (CJ Magrum should have qualified based on tournament results; must be injured; seems like he injury defaulted his last match; anyone know?). We've got 4 seeded wrestlers: Logan Stieber #2 at 133; Hunter Stieber #5 at 141; Cam Tessari #10 at 149; and Nick Heflin #10 at 174.

Wrestle well, a top 10 finish should happen. Wrestle really well, a top 5 finish could happen.

Magrum injured himself in his consolation match against Hinton and defaulted out of B1Gs, finishing 8th. He would have received an at-large bid to NCAAs even with the 8th place finish, but could not accept it due to his injury. He likely would have been seeded between 10-12 if healthy, I think. Really too bad for him.

Garcia also got screwed at 165. He earned the B1G an auto bid at the weight and was seeded 8th in the Pre-Seedings. Then for some reason for the final seeds they decided to drop him form 8th to unseeded and seed Harger 8th instead, leaving Derek with an awful draw, having to face Taylor (#1 seed at NCAAs) in his first match and then Yohn (#10 seed) in his consolation bout. Derek actually wrestled very well against Yohn, taking him to sudden victory, but couldn't pull out the win. And with how rough his first part of the season was, he wasn't selected for an at-large bid. Again, really too bad.

Also, Spangler dropped out of the tournament at 174 so they reseeded the weight and Heflin is now a #9 seed, and looks to have a better chance at AAing.

I'll try and get up a post about B1Gs and then a NCAA preview next week.

Real quick NCAA preview, as it starts tomorrow...

125 - Johnni DiJulius - 2-2

I see Johnni falling in his opening match against Synder, winning his next two, then falling to Mango or Mele to finish 2-2, though 3-2 is certainly not out of the question. I don't think there is much chance of him sneaking in to AA.

133-Logan Stieber - 2nd Place

Logan should breeze into the quarters, where he will likely face either Dardanes or Schopp. Schopp would seem to be the preferred choice, as Logan already beat him Vegas, but getting revenge on Dardanes would be nice. Really, I don't think it matters as I see him winning against either. He will then likely face Ramos or Carter, and based on past results against those two, you have to like Logan's chances (3-0 with solid wins each time this year against those two). Oliver will almost certainly be the finals opponent, and I think he defends his title, though in a closer match than last time they met.

141 - Hunter Stieber - 4th Place

First round easy win. Small in the second will be much tougher, but I still see a controlled win. Mangrum in the quarters is very tough, as he beat Hunter 6-3 in Vegas. Mangrum will be the favorite, but I think Hunter will do what he does best - make people say "uggh, even though he's a true freshman I should have gone with Stieber." He likely sees Russell in the semis if he beats Manrgum, who, despite what I just said, is a solid favorite, despite his loss to Hunter earlier, just based on that being his only loss in two years and dominating at B1Gs. I see him facing Marion next, and winning, then getting Mangrum in the 3rd place and losing close.

149 - Cam Tessari - 5th Place

I'm nervous about Jansen in his first match, but think Cam pulls it out. Ness will likely be next, and I see Cam being more disciplined and capitalizing for the win on a Ness mistake. He'll take a loss to Parks in the quarters, beat Habat in the AA match, defeat Naumann, lose to Vinson, then defeat Miller to take 5th in a huge surprise. I'm betting on Monroeville big time, here.

157 - Josh Demas - 2-2

Loses to Shuster in the pigtail, beats Waddell in the conso pigtail, beats Tanen, then loses to Ivanov.

165 - Derek Garcia - Did Not Qualify

174 - Nick Heflin - 6th Place

Heflin beats Purdue to start things off, then avenges his loss to Munster to make the quarters, where he falls to Ruth. He beats Edwards in his AA bout, then beats Lofthouse, before getting thumped by Perry and losing a close one to DesRoches.

184 - C.J. Magrum - Unable to Compete Due to Injury

197 - Andrew Campolattano - 2-2

Camp drops to the consolation bracket after losing to Burak, then beats a struggling Huntley. Facing McIntosh for the third time this year, Camp finally comes out on top in a close one, then loses to Hernandez to just miss the round of 12.

285 - Peter Capone - 0-2

Opens with a loss to Gibson, then loses to Beale in the first consolation bout. I think Pete has just run out of gas.

Team - 6th

Based on the pretty aggressive predictions I have here, I think this would be around 6th. More conservative/realistic is probably around 10 or 11 if they wrestle ok.

Ranked on the basis of AA likelihood I think it's:
1. Logan
2. Hunter
3. Cam
4. Heflin
5. Camp
6. DiJulius
7. Demas
8. Capone

Considering the youth on this squad spots 6-11 seems like a good. In another two years this team could hopefully challenge for the title.
