Buckeyes have little trouble with Huskers

Ohio State continued to marry its offense to its defense on Thursday night at Value City Arena, with results that kept the scoreboard piling up numbers like a pinball machine.

The fifth-ranked Buckeyes simply demolished Nebraska 96-70 to win a 10th consecutive game and maintain a hold on first place in the Big Ten standings by one game over Maryland with three to play in the regular season.

Ohio State (22-4, 14-1) announced its intentions early by hitting four quick three-pointers in the first quarter and moving to a 26-17 lead.

“We were hot,” said senior guard Ameryst Alston, one of five Buckeyes to reach double figures. “With our team, you have to guard each and every one of us. One through five, you have to guard us. When we attack, you have to help and it creates opportunities for us to get open shots.”

Defensively, Ohio State kept full-court pressure on the Cornhuskers (17-9, 8-7) and pushed the tempo to overdrive, which the Buckeyes love.

“We’re at our best when the game’s going like that from a tempo standpoint,” coach Kevin McGuff said. “We got it that way. I thought in the third quarter, even they were getting some shots, that they were hurried or rushed.”

Nebraska post player Jessica Shepard, the likely Big Ten freshman of the year, was as good as advertised. She scored 20 points but did not outplay Ohio State sophomore Alexa Hart on the inside. Hart had 18 points and nine rebounds.

“She had a lot of different moves,” Hart said. “Most players try to back you down and try to fight you. She created separation, spun off and scored. It was a different view. We had to come out and match their energy, and I guess we matched it.”

Shayla Cooper added 16 points and 11 rebounds to help Ohio State win on the boards 43-38.

“They want the ball,” Alston said of Hart and Cooper. “I think Shayla does a real good job of getting those loose balls, Alexa as well.”

Kelsey Mitchell matched Alston and Cooper with 16 points. Asia Doss had 13 points. Cait Craft had six assists and no turnovers.

Chelsea Mitchell scored a career-high eight points and Lisa Blair turned two offensive rebounds into baskets as Ohio State topped 90 points for the third time in four games.

This is a special team that is on the court right now for the Buckeyes. Anybody who isn't watching these ladies is missing out on something really special. Hopefully we can get some more folks in the stands the last few and really get them some support. Could be our first Final Four team since Katie Smith, I believe? And, only the second Final Four team ever?? That's just awesome. The supporting cast is finding their groove lately so that only helps Mitchell as they go forward. GO LADY BUCKS!!!!

I just have a terrible feeling that the Buckeyes are going to be stuck in the same bracket as UConn.

That being said this is a damn good team and a lot of fun to watch. It was nice seeing Chelsea step it up a bit last night. Too many people were bashing her for not being her sister.
