It’s not certain whether Ohio State is looking at Dayton’s Jim Jabir as its next women’s basketball coach, but Flyers athletic director Tim Wabler said this week that he will upgrade Jabir’s contract in anticipation of offers.

The Flyers went 28-3 and beat St. John’s before losing to No. 7 Kentucky in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. It was their fourth consecutive tournament appearance.“He’s a hot commodity now, and I know someone will make a run at him,” Walber said. “We want Jim Jabir to be at the university for a long time to come. He’s just a perfect fit."

Whether Jabir is a perfect fit for Ohio State isn’t clear. In firing Jim Foster, officials seemed to indicate they were looking to replace him with a coach who had a track record of success in the NCAA Tournament. In 11 seasons, Foster won 77 percent of his games and four Big Ten championships but made it as far as the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament only three times.

This has made Ohio State’s search somewhat problematic. Most coaches who have enjoyed this kind of success are with established programs and aren’t looking to move.

Toledo coach Tricia Cullop is another successful coach who would seem a likely candidate under normal circumstances. Her team, 29-4 this season, lost last night to Illinois in the WNIT.

COLUMBIA, SC — South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley is one of three candidates for the vacant Ohio State coaching position and will interview for the job early next week, The State has learned.

USC athletics director Ray Tanner said Friday that Ohio State had contacted him about interviewing Staley, and he granted the Big Ten school permission. Staley is expected to be in Columbus, Ohio, on Tuesday to interview, according to a source.

Dispatch has suggested Gail Goestenkors (maybe interviewing tomorrow) is the top pick after Dawn Staley withdrew herself from consideration. Interesting parallel between Goestenkors leaving Texas and Urban leaving Florida... She was a .797 coach at Duke from '92-'07, then jumped to Texas but resigned after 5 middling years to "take a break".

Also mentioned is Jeff Walz of Louisville, who is apparently a hot name with his team on a tourney run. Also mentions a "rumor" about Albany coach Kate Abrahamson-Henderson, who was once at Iowa State at the same time as Gene Smith.

The negotiations between Gail Goestenkors and Ohio State are close to finalization and she is expected to be named the next head coach, replacing Jim Foster by April 12.

Goestenkors coached previously at Duke and Texas and is expected to bring at least one Texas staff member to Ohio State.

It appears that the relationship between former Texas coach Gail Goestenkors and Ohio State has soured during the late stages of negotiations.

The ever-evolving situation had some major developments late yesterday and three different coaching sources close to the situation gave different accounts. One indicated that contract negotiations with Goestenkors had hit a snag. Another noted that Goestenkors would still be the ultimate choice. A third called another high-profile NCAA coach the favorite.

Moving forward, if things don't work out with that high-profile coach, they might consider a coach from the WNBA with college experience.

Goestenkors withdraws from Ohio State coaching search
As reported earlier, Ohio State's negotiations with Gail Goestenkors broke down once it became clear that another "high-profile" coach was in fact their favorite.

That coach was Louisville coach Jeff Walz.

Ohio State will continue to pursue Walz and if that doesn't work out, a coach in the WNBA with college experience is also a possibility.
